Georgia football commit Chace Calicut charged in Texas drive-by shooting
The Harris County (Texas) Sheriff's Office alleges Calicut is one of two Houston-area high schoolers who, on July 6, followed and shot at a car carrying two people with whom they had an ongoing dispute.

'Calicut and the other defendant continually tried to block the car and stop it. They shot numerous times into the vehicle,' the sheriff's department said in a statement to The Athletic. 'Neither (person) was hit by gunfire. Detectives were able to interview the complainants and charge both (suspects).'
Calicut was allegedly behind the wheel during the shooting and is said to have driven erratically to block and pull alongside the other vehicle. The inhabitants of that vehicle told police that Calicut's only passenger, Isaiah Bruce Phillip, was the person who shot at them.
Phillip, also 17, was killed at a July 20 pool party shooting before police could arrest him. He died at the scene of the attack, with two other teens suffering injuries.
It's unclear whether there is a connection between the alleged drive-by shooting and the pool party attack, but Calicut has not been tied to or charged with anything related to that incident. Police have not publicly identified any suspects in the incident.
Calicut made his first court appearance Tuesday night and received a $20,000 bond. Public records indicate he is still in custody as of Wednesday evening. The judge ruled that he must wear a GPS monitoring device, cannot leave Harris County and cannot return to North Shore High. His arraignment, at which he will enter his plea, is Aug. 6.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound safety committed to Georgia on June 27 after receiving 33 other offers from schools, including Alabama, Texas, Michigan and Miami, according to 247Sports. A senior set to graduate from high school next year, Calicut helped North Shore to a 14-1 record and a Texas 6A state semifinal appearance last season.
Calicut is the latest in a series of Georgia commits and players recently embroiled in criminal allegations.
On July 16, Georgia state police arrested offensive lineman Jah Jackson on marijuana possession charges. The team has not announced any discipline, letting the legal process play out. Jackson is expected to be a top reserve at left or right tackle if he remains with the team.

Then-current Georgia wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and offensive lineman Marques Easley were also arrested this past spring for speeding and reckless driving. The program immediately suspended them, and both later entered the transfer portal. That marked a slight but definite change in how head coach Kirby Smart has handled arrests, especially for driving.
In the past, Georgia suspended first-time offenders for a game, or not at all. The team cannot comment on recruits until they are officially signed, per NCAA rules. Smart could eventually retract the players' scholarship offers, but that has not happened yet.
Since Smart took over the program in 2016, the Bulldogs have a 105-19 record and have won two national championships in three appearances. Georgia opens the 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Marshall.

Police searching for suspect in the killings of a couple found dead at an Arkansas park
Police are searching for an unknown suspect in the killings of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, according to a release from Arkansas State Police Sunday. The Brinks were hiking in the Devil's Den State Park with their daughters, ages 7 and 9, who were not injured in the attack. The girls are safe with family members, police said. The park is in a remote and rural area, where the terrain is 'rugged, vegetation is thick and there is no cellphone service,' police said. Police were notified of the suspected double homicide around 2:40 p.m. Saturday. The suspect is described as a White male of medium build. Investigators said they believed he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up, dark pants, a dark ballcap, sunglasses and fingerless gloves. He was carrying a black backpack and seen driving towards the park exit in a black four-door sedan that may have been a Mazda with its license plate covered by tape, police said. The vehicle may have been travelling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park. The area has been cordoned off and police have asked visitors to the park to share any images they might have of the suspect from the park Saturday. Local residents have also been asked to check security and game camera footage. Police have increased law enforcement presence at state parks, said Shea Lewis, secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism in the release. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil's Den State Park. Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues,' the statement read. The Brinks family had recently moved to Prairie Grove from another state, police added.

Video shows chaos amid Baltimore's Federal Hill shooting
Video obtained by WJZ shows people running away as seven gunshots were fired early Sunday in Baltimore's Federal Hill, which left a woman injured. Police said a 39-year-old woman was shot multiple times shortly after midnight in the 1000 block of S. Charles Street. She was stable at the hospital. A person of interest is in custody, according to police. Security video from a Federal Hill business shows people dispersing as gunfire is heard in the background. A nearby restaurant employee described the chaotic scene. The employee told WJZ he's seen violence like this before. "When something like that happened, it made me a little bit nervous and a little bit worried because I do work here late, and I leave it late too," the employee said. "Sometimes it's like shocking and a little scary. I've been here for about five years already, so I'm used to it. When I see a lot of people, it is just another working day." The employee said the business doesn't want repeated violence in the area, but it doesn't want crime to deter customers from visiting. "We enjoy having people come in here, but stuff like this may scare people away," the employee said. "Everybody, calm down and stay safe." As WJZ has reported, recent crime in the area has been the epicenter of concern for both residents and businesses in the neighborhood. Just down the street, a man was beaten with a broomstick and left with a severe injury to his eye in the fall of 2024. In September of 2024, a 24-year-old man was shot and killed near Mugshots Bar & Grill on E. Cross Street. Earlier this month, Baltimore police said more than 60 vehicles and several businesses were damaged by vandals. The break-ins happened in the unit block and 200 block of East Montgomery Street, the 600 block of South Charles Street, and the 600 block of Washington Boulevard near Camden Yards. Surveillance video from the Federal Hill Cleaners on Charles Street showed the front glass door being shattered on July 13.
