28-Year-Old Vergier from Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, Finishes in 3rd Place in Elite Men Division
PAL ARINSAL, Andorra, July 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Another podium finish! Monster Energy congratulates team rider Loris Vergier on taking third place in the UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup in Pal Arinsal, Andorra, this weekend. In the sixth race of the 2025 season, the 28-year-old from Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, earned his second consecutive podium finish in the Elite Men division.
From July 9-12, the 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup returned to legendary Pal Arinsal, Andorra, for a weekend of competitions. The iconic Andorran bike park has provided the backdrop for world-class competitions on the UCI Downhill World Cup circuit since 2008. At a length of 1.18 miles, the track challenged riders with a mix of technical obstacles and tight turns that guaranteed close finish times.
In the Elite Men Downhill final on Saturday, Monster Energy's Vergier dropped in looking to continue his podium streak after taking second place on the previous weekend in La Thuile, Italy. After emerging from the grueling qualifier round in third place, Vergier was ready to put it all on the line in the final.
Following the incredibly tight time differences in qualifiers, the final race proved extra challenging after precipitation. "The track was great! It got faster with the rain overnight, but it was still very tricky in the woods. A lot of guys either had trouble there or crashed, so it became a crucial part of the race," said Vergier.
Putting down a perfect run and maintaining control, Vergier finished the course in a total of 2:36.534 for third place.
"I really enjoyed today and I'm very happy to be back on the podium two times in a row now," said Vergier, adding: "I made the move last year [to Andorra] to be closer with friends and it's awesome to land on the podium here with all of them around."
The third-place finish on Saturday maintains Vergier's current third-place position in the 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup season rankings with 926 points total. Asked about his approach for the rest of the season, Vergier said: "Now I get to focus on the second half of the season with some testing for the bike and, of course, some training to try and go faster. The summer break will go by fast!"
Not getting the finish he wanted in Andorra, 29-year-old Amaury Pierron from Brioude, France, was in the process of sticking what could have been a winning run before a crucial mistake: Missing a pole in the lower section of the track resulted in disqualification.
Stoking the crowd in Andorra, 24-year-old French team rider Thibaut Daprela finished the track in 2:37.401. Finishing in ninth place, 20-year-old Jordan Williams from Great Britain completed the course in 2:37.673.
The Elite Women division was overshadowed by 28-year-old Marine Cabirou from France suffering a heavy crash that required hospital treatment. She will be back for the next race and currently holds sixth place in overall season rankings with 649 points.
In Saturday's final Elite Women race, 35-year-old Camille Balanche from Le Locle, Switzerland, lost control and slid off-track on a tight turn, finishing in fourteenth place. Nevertheless, Balanche currently holds fourth place in season standings with 717 points.
The 2025 UCI Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup season is now at its halfway point: Make sure to tune in after the six-week break when racing returns at Les Gets, Haute-Savoie, France, from 28-31 August.

At Pamplona's San Fermin festival, a tiny minority of women run with bulls

PAMPLONA, Spain — Dressed in the traditional bull runner's garb of a white shirt and red neck-scarf, Yomara Martínez, 30, sprinted in the death-defying morning run or 'encierros' taking place this week in the northern Spanish city of Pamplona. Yet despite being in a crowd of thousands, Martínez was among only a handful of women daredevils running with the stampeding bulls at the San Fermín Festival. 'At the end of the day, the bull doesn't know about sexes, age or body shape,' Martinez said. 'It doesn't matter if you are woman.' Every year, thousands of people line the medieval streets of Pamplona to witness the centuries-old tradition of running with bulls. Many watch from balconies and wooden barricades along the course. Millions more follow the spectacle on television. Women bull runners are rare, though Martínez and other women taking part in the adrenaline-fueled tradition as more than mere spectators say it's growing in popularity. 'There are times I feel small. And ask myself 'what am I doing here?' Because, although you may not want to, you do feel slightly inferior because of your physique,' said 32-year-old Sara Puñal, an administrator who took part in Sunday's run. 'But in the moment, you are all equal,' Puñal said of the run. The bulls pound along the twisting cobblestone streets after being led by six steers. Up to 4,000 runners take part in each bull run, which takes place over 846 meters (2,775 feet) and can last two to four minutes. The expert Spanish runners try to sprint just in front of the bull's horns for a few seconds while egging the animal on with a rolled newspaper. Gorings are not rare, but many more people are bruised and injured in falls and pileups with each other. 'I think many have a desire to see what it feels like but they don't try because of fear,' said Paula López, 32, a shop assistant who also took part in a run earlier in the week. López said she grew up in the masculine world of bull fighting. She wasn't fazed by how few women take part in the event. 'It's complicated, but it is pretty exciting,' López said. The event's reputation took a hit years ago following complaints by women about having suffered sexual harassment and abuse from revelers. In 2016, five men raped an 18-year-old woman during the festival in an infamous case that sparked an outcry across Spain. The men, who had a WhatsApp group named 'La Manada,' or 'The Animal Pack,' were imprisoned for 15 years by the Supreme Court in 2019. Since then, organizers have said they've stepped up security measures. Women didn't participate in the bull runs until 1975 due to a decree repealed one year earlier that prohibited women, children and the elderly from being in the streets where the bulls run during the festival. The spectacle was made internationally famous by Ernest Hemingway's classic 1926 novel 'The Sun Also Rises,' about American bohemians wasting away in Europe. —— Naishadham reported from Madrid.

Carlos Alcaraz Does Not Have a Wife at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz Does Not Have a Wife at Wimbledon originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Girlfriend? Wife? Not even close. Carlos Alcaraz may be smashing his way through Wimbledon, but his love life isn't following like usual. Advertisement The 22-year-old Spanish star is set to face Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final today, but off the court, fans seem just as invested in his relationship status as they are in his forehand. With Emma Raducanu spotted in the stands during one of his matches, rumors flew faster than an Alcaraz return. Many wondered, are they dating? Alcaraz answered that question himself. 'No, I am single,' he told The Times in June 2024. 'I am looking for someone. It can be difficult as a tennis player to meet the right person because you are travelling all the time.' Fans of tennis star Carlos Alcaraz are clearly invested on the status of his lovelife.© Susan Mullane-Imagn Images Raducanu also addressed the buzz. In a conversation with the BBC, she laughed off the gossip. 'Glad the internet is having fun and we're providing some entertainment for everyone,' she said. Advertisement The two go way back, according to Raducanu. 'We both started getting to know each other when I had that little run at Wimbledon and he had the five set [match] in the first round in 2021,' she told 'Ever since we've stayed in touch.' So no, he's not married. And no, Emma's not his girlfriend. Alcaraz has made it clear, he's married to the game for now. As the timing isn't exactly ideal for him to commit himself. As he steps onto the court today to chase his third Wimbledon title, his heart belongs to tennis. The only match he's locked into right now? The one against Sinner.
