'Targeted women': ICC issues arrest warrants for two top Taliban leaders; Taliban calls it 'nonsense'
The International Criminal Court on Tuesday (local time) issued arrest warrants against two top
Taliban
leaders, accusing them of persecuting girls and women in Afghanistan, CNN reported.
In a statement, ICC clarified that the two men, Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and chief justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani are accused of encouraging the abuse of women, girls and others who don't adhere with the Taliban's policy on gender.
In response, the Taliban called the arrest warrants 'nonsense' and said they don't recognize the ICC. They also accused the court of showing hatred toward Islam by calling their interpretation of Islamic law a crime.
Back in January, the ICC's chief prosecutor said the duo has been criminally responsible for carrying out gender-based persecution since at least August 15, 2021, when the Taliban took over Afghanistan.
Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed harsh restrictions on women and girls. Girls are banned from attending school beyond sixth grade. Women must cover their entire bodies and faces in public and are not allowed to speak to or look at men outside their families.

The sound of women's voices in public has also been restricted.
The ICC said the Taliban have especially targeted women and girls because of their gender, taking away their basic rights and freedom.
'While the Taliban have imposed certain rules and prohibitions on the population as a whole, they have specifically targeted girls and women by reason of their gender, depriving them of fundamental rights and freedoms,' the ICC said on Tuesday.
'Specifically, the Taliban severely deprived, through decrees and edicts, girls and women of the rights to education, privacy and family life and the freedoms of movement, expression, thought, conscience and religion,' it continued.
The regime has also targeted people who support women's rights and LGBTQ people whose identities don't fit the Taliban's rules on gender.
The arrest warrants were issued one day after the
United Nations
General Assembly passed a resolution expressing deep concern about the worsening oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan.
The UN called on the Taliban to quickly reverse these policies.
Lisa Davis, ICC's Special Adviser on Gender and Other Discriminatory Crimes, said this is the first time an international court has recognized LGBTQ people as victims of crimes against humanity for gender persecution, according to media reports.
Human rights groups have welcomed the ICC move. Amnesty International's Secretary General Agnes Callamard called it an important step toward holding those responsible accountable.
Liz Evenson, the international justice director of Human Rights Watch said the arrest warrants could provide victims and their families with an essential pathway to justice.

US issues sanctions against UN investigator probing abuses in Gaza
The Trump administration announced it is issuing sanctions Wednesday against an independent investigator tasked with probing human rights abuses in the Palestinian territories, the latest effort by the United States to punish critics of Israel's 21-month war in Gaza. The State Department's decision to sanction Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza, comes after a recent US pressure campaign to force the international body to remove her from her post failed. Francesca Albanese, a human rights lawyer, has been vocal about what she has described as the genocide that Israel is waging against Palestinians in Gaza. Both Israel and the US, which provides military support, have strongly denied that accusation. In recent weeks, Albanese has issued a series of letters, urging other countries to pressure Israel, including through sanctions, to end its deadly bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The war between Israel and Hamas began October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel and killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people captive. Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which says women and children make up most of the dead but does not specify how many were fighters or civilians. Nearly 21 months into the conflict that displaced the vast majority of Gaza's 2.3 million people, it is nearly impossible for the critically wounded to get the care they need, doctors and aid workers say. Changur Baba, His Girlfriend Nasreen, Sent To UP ATS Custody In Conversion Racket Case

News18 Jamaluddin alias Changur Baba, who is accused of running a major religious conversion racket, was sent to the 7-day ATS police custody, officials said on Thursday. His alleged girlfriend Neetu, also known as Nasreen who allegedly played a key role in the racket, was also sent to police custody by the NIA court. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad will have the custody of both of them from July 10 to 16, during which the ATS will grill the duo and gather information about their wider gang network operation across the country. The police will also take action against Changur Baba under the Gangster Act, which includes the seizure of his properties. The Balrampur Police are cooperating with agencies in the arrest of named and other accused individuals Earlier, the UP Police intensified their crackdown on the accused and demolished parts of his 70-room mansion in Balrampur. On Tuesday, the authorities brought down 20 rooms and a 40-foot-long hall. The operation resumed the next day. The administration has declared a 40-room section of the mansion illegal. The UP ATS arrested Baba and his alleged girlfriend from a hotel in Lucknow. The duo was staying together in Room No. 102 of Star Rooms Hotel in Vikas Nagar of the city for the last 70 days. The police probe revealed that the room was initially booked on April 16 for four days using their Aadhaar cards; however, it later became a hub for continued conversion activities. The investigation found that Neetu comes from a middle-class Sindhi family in Balrampur and studied only up to Class 7. In 2015, she went to Dubai with her husband, Naveen Ghanshyam Rohra. Reports say that during this trip, both of them converted to Islam — Neetu changed her name to Nasreen, and Naveen became Jamaluddin. Later, in 2021, Naveen's entire family also converted to Islam. They also submitted an affidavit in the Utraula Civil Court in Balrampur, declaring Changur Baba as their spiritual leader. Neetu soon became a close aide of Changur Baba and was reportedly involved in a network that focused on religious conversions. Investigators say she used to befriend poor Hindu families, especially young girls, by offering help and talking about supposed 'miracles' done by Changur Baba. She would often share how her life changed after converting and promised money or medical help to attract people.
