Preview: Masry aim to hold off Simba in Confederation Cup quarterfinal second leg - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly08-04-2025
Egypt's Masry will look to keep their first leg advantage when they face Tanzania's Simba SC in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
First-half goals from Abderrahim Deghmoum and John Ebuka handed Masry a 2-0 win in the first leg last week in Suez. This puts the Port Said side in a strong position to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
Tunisian coach Anis Boujelbene has called for discipline and composure from his players.
He warned against the danger of conceding early in front of a home crowd. 'Simba are strong on their own ground, and we expect a tough atmosphere,' Boujelbene told his squad during Tuesday's tactical session. 'We must stay compact and avoid unnecessary risks.'
Masry conducted their final training session on Tuesday evening at the match venue following a light workout on Monday at Major General Isamuhiyo Stadium.
Simba topped their group in the earlier rounds of the competition.
They will rely heavily on home support in Dar es Salaam as they seek to overturn the deficit. The Tanzanian club has built a strong continental reputation in recent seasons and is expected to adopt an aggressive approach from the start.
The winner will face either Egypt's Zamalek or South Africa's Stellenbosch in the semifinals.

‘The Legend is Back': CS Sfaxien announce Maaloul's return after 9 Years with Ahly - Africa

Tunisian side CS Sfaxien confirmed the signing of veteran left-back Ali Maaloul in a free transfer on Saturday, marking the end of his nine-year tenure with Egyptian giants Ahly. The 35-year-old Maaloul had announced his departure from Ahly last May, after playing a pivotal role in one of the club's most successful eras. Speculation regarding his next move had been rife, with some suggesting he would retire, while others believed he would return to his childhood club, CS Sfaxien. On Saturday, CS Sfaxien made the announcement official with a video posted on their official Facebook page, headlined 'The Legend is Back.' Maaloul's stint with Ahly was marred by injury, as he underwent surgery in May 2024 to treat a partial tendon tear suffered during a match against Esperance de Tunis. The injury sidelined him for several months, including during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final. Despite signing a contract extension last summer, Maaloul was dropped from the squad to make room for a foreign player. When the transfer window reopened in January, he was not included in coach Marcel Koller's plans., as the club sought to strengthen their attack with a foreign forward. Since joining Ahly in the summer of 2016, Maaloul established himself as a cornerstone of the club's success. He recorded an impressive 51 goals and 83 assists in 287 appearances, earning a special place in the hearts of the club's supporters for his unwavering dedication and loyalty. Over his illustrious time in Cairo, the Tunisian international left behind an unmatched legacy, securing 21 titles, including four CAF Champions League trophies, two CAF Super Cups, six Egyptian Premier League titles, five Egyptian Super Cups, and four Egypt Cup victories. Before his time at Ahly, Maaloul helped CS Sfaxien secure the Tunisian League title in the 2012/13 season. Across 190 appearances for the club, he scored 39 goals and provided 43 assists in all competitions from 2008 to 2016. Rayvanny dazzles as CHAN PAMOJA 2024 kicks off in festive Dar es Salaam

Published: Saturday, 02 August 2025 A spectacular fusion of Tanzanian music and continental football marked the opening night of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, as homegrown star Rayvanny lit up the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam with a stunning live performance. The high-energy show kicked off before Saturday evening's Group B opener between hosts Tanzania and Burkina Faso, creating a carnival-like atmosphere that celebrated Africa's rich cultural heritage and its growing local football scene. Rayvanny headlines a cultural spectacle Thousands of fans filled the stands as Rayvanny, one of Tanzania's biggest music exports, took centre stage. The award-winning singer brought his signature Bongo Flava style to life with an electrifying performance that had the crowd dancing and singing along. Accompanied by vibrant Singeli rhythms, a fast-paced traditional Tanzanian music style, Rayvanny's show formed the heartbeat of an unforgettable opening ceremony. Earlier, dancers from Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda — the tournament's three co-hosts — presented traditional routines that celebrated the nations' shared cultural identity. A flag parade followed, showcasing the 19 participating countries in a powerful moment of continental unity. Fireworks and flags capture the PAMOJA spirit The evening burst into colour as fireworks lit up the Dar es Salaam sky, drawing cheers from the crowd. Spectators waved flags, danced in the stands, and sang in celebration of the tournament's return, fully embracing the spirit of 'PAMOJA' , a Swahili word meaning 'together' , which serves as the tournament's official slogan. The vibrant ceremony reflected the core values of the championship — unity through football and culture. Kick-off to a tournament of hope The opening match between Tanzania and Burkina Faso followed the ceremony, marking the official start of what promises to be a thrilling edition of the CHAN — the tournament dedicated exclusively to players competing in their national domestic leagues. With co-hosting duties split among Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, and an expanded prize pool, the CHAN PAMOJA 2024 has been billed as a turning point for the competition, aiming to highlight the depth of local talent across Africa. The presence of local musical icons like Rayvanny underlines the fusion of sport and culture that CHAN seeks to promote — not just a celebration of football, but of African identity. As the tournament unfolds, attention will turn to who can follow in the footsteps of defending champions Senegal and past winners like Morocco and DR Congo, as teams battle for continental glory — all against the backdrop of roaring crowds and pulsating rhythms.
