WhatsApp requirements: In a vital update for users still clinging on to their older iPhones or Android-based smartphones, WhatsApp, Meta's popular messaging app, will stop working in devices running iOS 15 or earlier, or Android 5.0 or earlier, from tomorrow (June 1, 2025). According to Meta, the company is raising the minimum requirements for using WhatsApp because older iOS and Android-based smartphones no longer receive critical security updates from Apple and Google, respectively, which opens up users to a whole range of security threats.

Not necessarily, while all the above mentioned phones are essentially ancient relics in 2025, its important to note that some might still be upgradable to iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 which would enable WhatsApp to continue to run on these devices, at least until Meta raises the requirements again.
However, if your phone is stuck on iOS 15 or Android 5.0, meaning you need to change your device, do not worry about losing your WhatsApp chats and media, and follow these easy steps to backup these to your Google account, which you can later use to restore on your new device. Germany asks Apple, Google to ban Chinese AI app DeepSeek over privacy concerns
Germany's data protection commissioner has formally requested Apple and Google to remove Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from their app stores, citing concerns over illegal transfer of user data to China. Meike Kamp, the country's commissioner for data protection, stated on Friday that DeepSeek failed to prove it safeguards German users' personal information at a level consistent with EU privacy standards. According to its own privacy policy, the company stores user queries and uploaded files on servers located in China. 'Chinese authorities have sweeping access rights to personal data held by Chinese companies,' said Kamp. She emphasized that DeepSeek had been given an opportunity in May to comply with EU data transfer regulations or voluntarily withdraw its app—neither of which it followed through on. In response, Google confirmed receipt of the notice and said it was reviewing the request. Apple has yet to comment. DeepSeek also did not respond to media inquiries. The move comes amid growing global scrutiny of DeepSeek, which made headlines in January by claiming to have developed a low-cost AI model competitive with ChatGPT. While the announcement stirred interest, regulators in the EU and U.S. have since raised red flags about its data handling. Sound of innovation: Mumbai mosques go digital with 'azan app' to overcome loudspeaker curbs
MUMBAI: In the backdrop of curbs over the use of loudspeakers, half-a-dozen mosques in Mumbai have registered on a dedicated mobile phone application which relays the 'azan', or call to prayer, directly to the faithful in real-time. The app, Online Azan, has been developed by a Tamil Nadu-based company. Given the restrictions and sensitivities surrounding the use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer, the dedicated mobile app helps relay the azan directly to worshippers from local mosques, Fahad Khalil Pathan, managing trustee of Mahim Juma Masjid, told PTI. The free app will allow users to listen to the azan at home, especially during Ramzan (the Islamic holy month of fasting) and other times when public announcements are restricted, he explained. "The initiative comes after a police crackdown on the use of loudspeakers, where officers visited the mosque (Juma Masjid) and warned loudspeaker use could result in action. This led to the mosque temporarily disabling its sound system," Pathan stated. To ensure that spiritual experience remains uninterrupted, especially for the elderly and those residing nearby (the mosque), the Juma Masjid in the Mahim area has adopted the app, he said. The app was developed with technical support from a team of IT professionals from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, and is now available on Android devices and iPhones. The app plays a live audio stream of the azan through mobile phones, exactly when it is delivered from the mosque.
