In a tragic case, a nine year old girl has died after undergoing anesthesia. She was supposed to have a dental procedure.
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office, Silvanna Moreno, "underwent dental surgery under anesthesia in Vista and transitioned to a recovery room afterwards.
She was later discharged from the facility. She fell asleep during her ride home. Upon arrival, she stayed sleeping and was transitioned into her bed at home. Family checked on her throughout the day to later find her unresponsive in bed and called 911 for emergency services assistance. Responding paramedics contacted the decedent and provided lifesaving measures while transporting her to the Rady Children's Hospital Emergency Department.
Upon her arrival, medical staff assumed the provision of lifesaving measures to no avail with death being pronounced." She died on March 18.
The report mentions her cause of death to be "Methemoglobinemia in the setting of recent nitrous oxide administration."
What is Methemoglobinemia?
Methemoglobinemia is a rare but serious blood disorder where your red blood cells can't carry oxygen. Normally, hemoglobin works like a delivery agent, bringing oxygen to all the tissues in your body.

But when someone has methemoglobinemia, a form of hemoglobin called methemoglobin starts to build up. This version can't carry oxygen like it's supposed to. It's like your oxygen delivery system broke down halfway through the job.
Now here's where it gets tricky: this condition can be genetic (you're born with it), or it can happen because of exposure to certain drugs, chemicals, or even foods high in nitrates (like well water or too much spinach in babies).
People with methemoglobinemia might look blue or gray-ish (a condition called cyanosis), feel short of breath, dizzy, or super tired all the time. In severe cases, it can cause seizures or even death if left untreated.
Yes, anesthesia can sometimes cause methemoglobinemia, especially certain types of local anesthetics like benzocaine, prilocaine, or even lidocaine in high doses. These drugs can trigger the formation of methemoglobin in the blood, making it harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen.
This risk is higher in babies, people with genetic susceptibility, or those getting large doses during surgery or dental work.
Symptoms might show up shortly after exposure—like bluish skin, shortness of breath, or fatigue.
She was administered anesthesia by Dr. Ryan Watkins. "The patient was referred to our office for dental treatment under general anesthesia due to her young age and acute situational anxiety," he told PEOPLE. "Throughout the procedure, she was continuously monitored by our dentist anesthesiologist ... with no complications observed." New reports say Dr Watkins had faced disciplinary action before.

Samosa, jalebi join cigarettes on health alert list

AI image NAGPUR: The jalebi might soon come with a guilt trip. The samosa, a side of shame. And your chai biscuit? A health warning on the wall behind it. The health ministry has ordered all central institutions, including AIIMS Nagpur, to install "oil and sugar boards" - vivid posters spelling out how much hidden fat and sugar lurk in everyday snacks. It's a first step toward treating junk food like tobacco. The boards aim to act as quiet but pointed reminders in govt institutions, alerting citizens to the sugar and oil content in snacks considered cultural staples. A laddoo, a vada pav, a pakora - all under scrutiny. AIIMS Nagpur officials confirmed the directive. Cafeterias and public areas will soon display the warnings. "It's the beginning of food labelling becoming as serious as cigarette warnings," said Amar Amale, president of Cardiological Society of India's Nagpur chapter. "Sugar and trans fats are the new tobacco. People deserve to know what they're eating." Govt's internal note draws a sharp line under the country's growing obesity crisis. More than 44.9 crore Indians are projected to be overweight or obese by 2050 - placing the country second only to the US. Already, one in five urban adults is overweight. The rise in childhood obesity, driven by poor diet and low activity, deepens the concern. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo "This is not about banning food," said senior diabetologist Sunil Gupta. "But if people knew that one gulab jamun might contain five teaspoons of sugar, they might think twice before going for seconds." Doctors and health advocates see this as part of the broader war on non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, many of which are linked to diet. Nagpur will be among the first to reflect that shift - not with bans, but with bold, visual nudges. Near every tempting snack, a colourful sign will watch over: "Eat wisely. Your future self will thank you."

CM promises strong action against those responsible for girl setting her ablaze

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday promised stringent action against those responsible for forcing the 20-year-old college student to set herself ablaze after her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member remained unaddressed by the institution's authorities. Majhi, following his return from Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he met the girl battling for her life. The CM said the girl, a second-year student pursuing an integrated BEd programme at a govt college in Balasore district, is in an extremely critical state. "The govt has taken the matter with all seriousness to ensure that all those responsible are not spared. A committee of the higher education department has already started its ground investigation. While immediate action was already taken on Saturday, further strictest action will follow after completion of the ongoing probe," Majhi said. After consoling the distraught parents, Majhi said the medical team is collaborating virtually with their Delhi colleagues to save the girl's life. He indicated the possibility of airlifting her to AIIMS, Delhi if her condition stabilises enough for her to be moved. AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Ashutosh Biswas said a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from anaesthesia, pulmonary medicine, surgery, critical care, plastic surgery, nephrology and nursing has been formed to oversee the girl's treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The patient, who suffered 90-95% burns, is on ventilator support in the ICU. Her condition is extremely critical. We are trying our best," Biswas said, adding that her internal organs, including kidneys and lungs, have been severely affected. "The next 24-48 hours is critical," Biswas said. The development comes on a day opposition parties held demonstrations and the National Commission for Women (NCW) sought a report from the state DGP. On Saturday, an assistant professor against whom she had recently filed a sexual harassment complaint with the college's internal complaints committee, was arrested. The govt also placed him under suspension along with the college principal. The CM affirmed the govt's commitment to preventing similar incidents in educational institutions. "We have directed all institutions to further strengthen their student grievance redressal mechanisms," Majhi said. The state crime branch, meanwhile, has sent a team of officers from its crime against women and children's wing (CAW&CW) to Balasore to assist the local police in the investigation.
