9-year-old dies after undergoing anesthesia for a dental procedure: What went wrong?
In a tragic case, a nine year old girl has died after undergoing anesthesia. She was supposed to have a dental procedure.
According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office, Silvanna Moreno, "underwent dental surgery under anesthesia in Vista and transitioned to a recovery room afterwards.
She was later discharged from the facility. She fell asleep during her ride home. Upon arrival, she stayed sleeping and was transitioned into her bed at home. Family checked on her throughout the day to later find her unresponsive in bed and called 911 for emergency services assistance. Responding paramedics contacted the decedent and provided lifesaving measures while transporting her to the Rady Children's Hospital Emergency Department.
Upon her arrival, medical staff assumed the provision of lifesaving measures to no avail with death being pronounced." She died on March 18.
The report mentions her cause of death to be "Methemoglobinemia in the setting of recent nitrous oxide administration."

Methemoglobinemia is a rare but serious blood disorder where your red blood cells can't carry oxygen. Normally, hemoglobin works like a delivery agent, bringing oxygen to all the tissues in your body.

But when someone has methemoglobinemia, a form of hemoglobin called methemoglobin starts to build up. This version can't carry oxygen like it's supposed to. It's like your oxygen delivery system broke down halfway through the job.

She was administered anesthesia by Dr. Ryan Watkins. "The patient was referred to our office for dental treatment under general anesthesia due to her young age and acute situational anxiety," he told PEOPLE. "Throughout the procedure, she was continuously monitored by our dentist anesthesiologist ... with no complications observed." New reports say Dr Watkins had faced disciplinary action before.

Nipah death in Plkd: Six dists put on alert
T'puram/Kochi: In light of the second Nipah case detected in Palakkad district, health minister Veena George has issued a cautionary directive to hospitals in six districts. The advisory has been given to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur. The directive instructs that any cases of fever with Nipah symptoms or encephalitis should be reported. Meanwhile, containment zones have been declared in seven wards of Kumaramputhur panchayat, four wards of Mannarkkad municipality, three wards of Karimpuzha panchayat and three wards of Karakurissi panchayat. The minister said that the contact list of the 57-year-old man, who died of Nipah in a private hospital in Palakkad, has been prepared. His samples tested positive during a test conducted at Manjeri medical college. The contact tracing was immediately started, and 46 people were identified. CM promises strong action against those responsible for girl setting her ablaze
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday promised stringent action against those responsible for forcing the 20-year-old college student to set herself ablaze after her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member remained unaddressed by the institution's authorities. Majhi, following his return from Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he met the girl battling for her life. The CM said the girl, a second-year student pursuing an integrated BEd programme at a govt college in Balasore district, is in an extremely critical state. "The govt has taken the matter with all seriousness to ensure that all those responsible are not spared. A committee of the higher education department has already started its ground investigation. While immediate action was already taken on Saturday, further strictest action will follow after completion of the ongoing probe," Majhi said. After consoling the distraught parents, Majhi said the medical team is collaborating virtually with their Delhi colleagues to save the girl's life. He indicated the possibility of airlifting her to AIIMS, Delhi if her condition stabilises enough for her to be moved.
