Coco Gauff ‘mentally overwhelmed' before shock first-round Wimbledon exit

New York Post3 days ago
A 'disappointed' Coco Gauff expanded on her mindset Tuesday while speaking to the press after the No. 2 seed's stunning first-round ouster at Wimbledon to Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska.
Gauff, just weeks removed from her first-ever French Open win, expressed she was emotionally 'overwhelmed' entering the third Grand Slam of the year, while acknowledging lessons learned amid her brief run at the All England Club.
'I feel like mentally I was little bit overwhelmed with everything that came afterwards, so I didn't feel like I had enough time to do, I guess celebrate and then also get back into it,' said Gauff, who lost Tuesday in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

'But it's the first time, in this experience, like coming off a win and having to play at Wimbledon, and I definitely learned about what I would and would not do again.'
Gauff, 21, noted it would be a 'tough match' against Yastremska, recognizing a struggle on grass courts compared to clay.

'I have faith that if I can make these adjustments, I can do well here, I really do want to do well here, I'm not someone who wants to write myself off grass this early in my career, but I definitely need to make some changes if I want to be successful,' she said.
Gauff, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, has advanced as far as the fourth round at Wimbledon, including last year's defeat to compatriot Emma Navarro.

Tuesday's defeat follows her June 7 triumph at Roland-Garros, where she knocked off world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4.
Gauff was one of several big names to get knocked out of Wimbledon in this week's first round.
No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula fell to Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3, while last year's semifinalist, Daniil Medvedev, lost to Benjamin Bonzi, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Wimbledon runs through July 13.

Diogo Jota's heartbroken wife Rute Cardoso breaks down while helping carry coffin at funeral

The wife of late Portuguese soccer star Diogo Jota broke down while carrying his coffin after his funeral mass Saturday at Igreja Matriz church in Gondomar, Portugal, following his tragic death in a fiery car crash earlier this week. Rute Cardoso was emotional while helping pallbearers Saturday, appearing to cry and lowering her head while they carried the ex-Liverpool standout's coffin after the mass for Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, who also perished in the wreck that occurred just after midnight Thursday in Spain. 6 Cardoso is emotional while helping carry the coffin. When is Novak Djokovic playing? Time, TV channel for Saturday Wimbledon matchup

Novak Djokovic's quest for an eighth Wimbledon title is off to a strong start. The 24-time major winner has won six of his first seven sets at the tournament and advanced with ease into Round 3 after sweeping Daniel Evans in straight sets: 6-3, 6-2, 6-0. Now, Djokovic will turn his attention to his next opponent: one of his countrymen and a top-50 player in the world rankings. Djokovic – who has won a record 24 men's singles major titles during his illustrious career – has enjoyed a great deal of success at Wimbledon throughout his career, especially in recent seasons. He has made the tournament final six consecutive times, though he has lost to Carlos Alcaraz back-to-back years in the championship match. Djokovic's success at the All England Club is part of why he is among the favorites to win the event despite entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed. Another win would allow him to tie Roger Federer's record of eight wins at the grass-court tournament. Below is what to know about Djokovic's Round 3 matchup, how to watch him on the court and his results from tennis' oldest major. When does Novak Djokovic play next? Djokovic is set to play his Round 3 matchup on Saturday. He had Friday off after his straight-set win over Daniel Evans in Round 2. What time is Novak Djokovic playing at Wimbledon? Djokovic's Saturday match is tentatively scheduled to begin at Noon ET. It will be the last men's singles matchup of the day and will be played on Centre Court. There's been so much chaos at Wimbledon that Novak Djokovic's solid play has flown under the radar. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has dropped just one set through the first two rounds, and more importantly, looks fit as a fiddle. Djokovic came into the tournament as the third favorite behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, so it's not a shock that he's made quick work of his first two opponents, but what is a bit surprising is how little he's being talked about as a title contender. Most fans, pundits, and bettors believe another Sinner-Alcaraz final is a foregone conclusion, but Djokovic will fancy his chances given his draw. Djokovic is a prohibitive -4000 favorite to beat his fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday afternoon. Kecmanovic, who peaked as the World No. 27 early in 2023, is far from a walkover against most opponents, but Djokovic should have no issues with the 25-year-old. Not only has he dominated the head-to-head, but Kecmanovic has been unconvincing in his two wins at Wimbledon this year. He's already spent five-and-a-half hours on court at the All England Club. Kecmanovic has the game to pop an upset, but there's no indication of it coming right now. He fell to Dan Evans, who Djokovic just whitewashed, in Eastbourne as a warmup for Wimbledon. Miomir Kecmanovic has spent over five hours on court through the first two rounds of Wimbledon. Geoff Burke-Imagn Images The prices on Djokovic to win this match (he's -215 to win in straights) are too expensive, but now seems like a decent time to back the Serb to win this tournament. He's got a couple of tricky players left in his quarter, and he'll need to find a way through Sinner and Alcaraz eventually, but there are some signals that he'll be up to the challenge when we get into the semifinals and finals. Not only is Djokovic's form in great shape, but he's not spent much time on the court, and that should pay off if he gets the chance to go up against the heavyweights.
