EastEnders bags bittersweet win as best soap at BAFTA TV Awards after ITV rival Emmerdale forced to withdraw from nominations

Daily Mail12-05-2025
EastEnders bagged a bittersweet win as Best Soap at the BAFTA TV Awards after ITV rival Emmerdale was forced to withdraw from nominations.
The BBC drama beat Casualty and Coronation Street and scooped the prize at the prestigious ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday.
Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw accepted the award and thanked fans for their support over the last 40 years, while cast members stood proudly beside him on stage.
However, the win comes after ITV competitor Emmerdale withdrew its entry for the award back in March after one of the scriptwriters was found guilty of domestic abuse.
Bosses at the channel pulled out of the nomination after writer Martin Fustes pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend.
According to The Sun, ITV felt it was inappropriate to be included after the recent developments, as the soap has recently featured and won acclaim for a storyline about domestic abuse.
A spokesperson for ITV and Emmerdale told MailOnline at the time: 'ITV and Emmerdale have taken the decision to withdraw from the Soap category from this year's awards.
'This is in consideration of recent news involving a member of the scriptwriting team.'
The Sun reported how BAFTA members had been told that anyone who had voted for Emmerdale had to recast their votes following the withdrawal.
The top writer for Emmerdale told his partner he wanted to kill her and chop up her face, a court heard.
Martin Fustes, 47, assaulted the terrified woman and the made vile threats on January 27 after a late-night argument at their home in Beverley, East Yorkshire, where they lived with their children.
She feared she was going to die after abusive boyfriend Fustes turned nasty and began suffocating her by putting his hands over her nose and mouth and told her he wished she could be set alight and hanged from a tree.
Fustes admitted assaulting the woman, causing actual bodily harm, and an offence of intentional suffocation when he appeared before Hull Magistrates' Court on January 31.
At his sentencing at Hull Crown Court on February 28, he was given a two-year suspended prison sentence, 150 hours unpaid work, 15 days rehabilitation and a 26-session probation service domestic abuse programme.
He was also ordered to pay £2,000 compensation, £150 in costs and was given a ten-year restraining order.
Fustes has been an Emmerdale writer for at least 10 years, according to a fan page of the ITV soap, and is understood to have even penned domestic violence storylines -a key focus in the soap over the last 12 months.
An ITV spokesperson said at the time: 'We were shocked and appalled to learn about the recent court case involving Emmerdale writer Martin Fustes. Mr Fustes is a freelance writer and he has been informed that he will no longer be writing for Emmerdale.
'Everyone at ITV and Emmerdale abhors domestic abuse, which is why we have been highlighting the issue in a major storyline over the last 12 months. The Emmerdale production team were not aware of these charges against Mr Fustes until we were alerted over the weekend.'

One Tree Hill star Jana Kramer reacts to rumor her husband Allan Russell is on the Bumble dating app

Jana Kramer says she isn't worried about rumors her husband is stepping out on her. The 72 Hours actress, whose husband Allan Russell, 41, revealed some very personal information about their sex life, opened up about the issue Monday in her Whine Down podcast. 'I literally trust Allan so much. Did you get the email about Bumble?' Kramer, 41, asked her co-host, claiming that someone had been impersonating the former Scottish soccer player on the dating app. 'Remember how there was this thing going around being like, "Oh, Allan is on a dating app?" And Allan and I were joking about it. It's hilarious,' she said. Showing her trust in her husband, she said, 'But I wouldn't even look into that now. In years past, I would have 1,000 percent looked into it.' However, the One Tree Hill alumna said there is still some cause for concern, as there is allegedly ''a fake Bumble account going around and they're using his picture.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jana Kramer (@kramergirl) She explained, 'There's not a piece of me' that believes the rumors. Kramer said her marriage to Russell is 'so different than my last one' to former Buffalo Bills tight-end Mike Caussin, 38, who was unfaithful to her several times and eventually entered into treatment for sex addiction. The couple were married from 2015–2021, and they share two children: Jolie, nine, and Jace, six. Kramer's first marriage to Michael Gambino, 47, was a violent one. Gambino was convicted on attempted murder charges after a 2005 incident in which he choked the actress until she was unconscious. He was released in 2010 and took his own life two years later. She shared a short-lived one-month marriage with That Thing You Do actor Johnathon Schaech in 2010. Kramer began dating Russell is January 2023, and by November of that year they had welcomed their son Roman, 21 months. They married legally in January 2024 and held a formal ceremony in July. 'Happy 1st wedding anniversary my love,' Kramer wrote on social media last month sharing photos from their big day. 'It's been a year full of love, growth, and adventure. Thank you for loving me the way you do and for making this first year more beautiful than I ever imagined. I wouldn't want to do life with anyone else. Happy anniversary my love.' 'We have everything to last,' she said Monday of her relationship with Russell. 'I didn't have anything to hold on to in my last marriages. So that's why it's so different. So, it's like, hold on now to what you know to be the truth of what you do have.'

I tried James Dyson's new hair oil. Is it as good as his hairdryer?

He's the British megabrain whose £300 vacuum cleaner-inspired hairdryer put lesser rivals to shame but can James Dyson convince us to switch up the products we use to nourish our locks? The inventor has dabbled with hair products before, in the form of his Chitosan styling cream, but his latest innovation is perhaps the buzziest beauty launch of the year so far. • Read more beauty product reviews and advice from our experts Dyson Omega hair oil is a blend of seven omega-rich oils, one of which is sourced from sunflowers grown on his Lancashire farm. Provenance has long been a buzzword in the food world; Dyson appears to be banking on it catching on in — and disrupting — the beauty aisles. It will cost £45.99 for what looks like a 30ml glass perfume bottle and is part of a new range that includes a £59.99 leave-in conditioning spray. They won't be launched until August 27 but I managed to secure both products before their global unveiling and I'm putting each to the test. First I spritz the leave-in spray on after a shampoo and a quick towel-dry. It's lightweight and silky. I find that the knots come away easily when I then run my hairbrush through it: big tick. There's no sticky residue and, even damp, my hair feels soft and workable. It smells nice but not remarkable. That's no bad thing — there's no hair health science behind a nice scent. I'd happily leave it there on a normal day — air-dried hair is a bit cooler than full blow-outs at the mo — but I'm keen to see how the spray reacts with heat. With my usual finger zhuzhing, paddle brush and hairdryer handiwork, it dries straight, smooth and with a nice bit of volume. In short, it does its job. • Summer's richest pickings in the M&S cyber-fallout sale Next, the hair oil. It can be used on damp hair but I'm more interested in what it adds post-styling. I work 3-4 drops through my hair, paying particular attention to the ends and more frizz-prone undergrowth. Again, it's effective: my hair looks shiny and smooth, and isn't weighed down. There are no flyaways. My husband pays it a compliment as we pass in the kitchen. However, I'm not entirely convinced it's transformative. I suspect it's only Dyson fanatics who won't think twice about parting with nearly £50 for it. Still, given that over the past decade Dyson's hairstyling tools have so thoroughly crowbarred themselves into blow-dry routines globally — the Supersonic hairdryer (£329) and Airwrap curler (£400) in particular — and are the bestselling hair electricals at John Lewis, there are plenty of those fanatics around. EastEnders confirms devastating new ordeal for Stacey as the police are involved

EastEnders is lining up more turmoil for Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) next week. Just weeks after finally grappling with the grief felt for late husband Martin Fowler (James Bye), a fresh new story is being lined up – and it harks back to 2023. In upcoming scenes, Stacey is thrilled to learn that daughter Lily (Lillia Turner) is making her way back to Albert Square after staying with her dad Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott). Unfortunately, the happiness is cut short when mum Jean (Gillian Wright) and cousin Freddie (Bobby Brazier) are forced to break the news that her SecretCam content has been leaked online. As viewers will recall, Freddie introduced Stacey to the OnlyFans dupe when she was looking for a way to make some quick cash. Under the username IceSKater95, she uploaded feet pictures to the site to pay off her bills and a loan shark. Her uploads became more risqué at the request of a subscriber, who she later realised was Walford High teacher Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis). He subsequently stalked Stace', attempting to rape her and was handed a 10 year stretch in prison. But who has found the content this time? Well, Stacey's convinced it's troubled teen Joel Marshall (Max Murray), who we'll see her cross paths with later this week. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers?
