In a surprise move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned late on Monday citing health reasons . The 74-year-old leader had undergone a cardiac procedure in March but continued to maintain a hectic schedule since then. His resignation had not been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu till press time Monday. In his resignation letter, the lawyer-turned-politician expressed his gratitude to her, the Prime Minister, the union council of ministers and the MPs for the 'warmth, trust and affection' he had received during his tenure.'To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,' Dhankhar wrote in his letter that he also shared on social media site X.Dhankhar, who turned 74 in May, had undergone a cardiac procedure on March 9. He had been rushed to AIIMS, Delhi, after he complained of chest pain. He was back in Parliament — the budget session was ongoing at the time — after a few days.Dhankhar had chaired the sessions, albeit with some breaks. Since then, he continued to maintain a demanding public schedule. There was heightened activity in the corridors of Parliament on Monday, but officials did not say if it was connected to Dhankhar's resignation.Dhankhar took the Treasury Benches by surprise when he mentioned in the Rajya Sabha that he received a notice from the Opposition to constitute a statutory committee for the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma and that it has been signed by more than 50 members of the Upper House. It was expected that the government would initiate the process first in the Lok Sabha. Soon after, a meeting was held in defence minister Rajnath Singh's chamber in Parliament. Top union ministers Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar attended the meeting. MPs from the ruling alliance including BJP's allies then came and signed on a notice. The Congress party urged Dhankhar to withdraw his resignation and hoped PM Modi would get him to change his mind. The Opposition is expected to seek government clarification on the matter in Parliament Tuesday. 'The sudden resignation of the Vice President and chairman of Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable. I was with him alongside a number of other MPs till around 5 PM today and had spoken to him over the phone at 7:30 PM,' Congress chief whip in the Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh wrote on his X handle. "No doubt Mr Dhankar has to give topmost priority to his health. But clearly there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye,' he said.'We wish him the best of health but also request him to reconsider his decision. We also expect the Prime Minister to get Mr Dhankar to change his mind. This will be in the nation's interest. The farming community particularly will be greatly relieved," Ramesh said.It has been a privilege and satisfaction to partake in India's remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this periodOutgoing Vice President .

Trump removes official overseeing jobs data after dismal US employment report for July

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Friday removed the head of the agency that produces the monthly jobs figures after a report showed hiring slowed in July and was much weaker in May and June than previously reported. Trump, in a post on his social media platform, alleged that the figures were manipulated for political reasons and said that Erika McEntarfer, the director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, should be fired. He provided no evidence for the charge. 'I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,' Trump said on Truth Social. 'She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.' Trump later posted: 'In my opinion, today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad.' The charge that the data was faked is an explosive one that threatens to undercut the political legitimacy of the US government's economic data, which has long been seen as the 'gold standard' of economic measurement globally. Economists and Wall Street investors have for decades generally accepted the data as free from political bias. Trump's move to fire McEntarfer represented another extraordinary assertion of presidential power. He has wielded the authority of the White House to try to control the world's international trade system, media companies, America's top universities and Congress' constitutional power of the purse, among other institutions.

JDS leader slams Congress over khata fee hike

BENGALURU: Former JDS MLC H M Ramesh Gowda has criticised the ruling Congress government for imposing exorbitant charges—ranging from Rs 2 to Rs 3 lakh—for converting B Khata to A Khata within the Greater Bengaluru Authority limits. Gowda also termed the process as 'big bogus'. If the matter goes to court, the government will be reprimanded, he added. Addressing a press conference on Friday, he said that earlier, BBMP was levying a tax of Rs 13,800 per square meter. This tax rate has been increased by an average of 1,000% by the state government, and this will lead to an increase from Rs 3-6 lakh rupees. The state government charged Rs 250 per square meter in 2007, and under the present government led by Siddaramaiah, the rate has been increased to over Rs 2,000 per square foot, he alleged. On 25-07-2025, the state government issued an order and created confusion by announcing the issue of 'A' Khata to 'B' Khata holders. The purpose of this government is to make money, and it does not care about the people. Expressing solidarity with Gowda, senior party leader K A Thippeswamy said that a 'tax raj' is being created in the city in the name of Greater Bangalore. 'The state Congress government is looting the people of the city in the name of tax. Our party will wage all kinds of struggles against this loot,' he said.

If Omar wants only statehood then we are on the same page: Sunil Sharma

As the debate on restoration of statehood heats up with Congress hitting roads across J&K, BJP's leader of Opposition in the assembly Sunil Sharma said if chief minister Omar Abdullah wants only statehood then they are on the same page. Now it seems the BJP too has softened its stand on the statehood restoration though some of party leaders are saying statehood shouldn't be granted unless it gets clearance from the ministry of home affairs and security agencies. (ANI File) The NC, Congress and other political parties have now increased their pitch for statehood with Congress J&K president Tariq Karra asking other political parties of state to join his party for statehood restoration protests. Congress recently held a protest for statehood at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and its leaders said the protests will continue until statehood is granted which Congress leaders described as the right of people of J&K. Now it seems the BJP too has softened its stand on the statehood restoration though some of party leaders are saying statehood shouldn't be granted unless it gets clearance from the ministry of home affairs and security agencies. 'If the NC is seeking statehood without Article 370 and without Martyrs Day, just like a normal state then we are on the same page,' Sunil Sharma told a local news agency and said that Article 370 is now 'buried forever.' The latest statement from the senior BJP looks a departure from the past when all BJP leaders advocated that statehood shouldn't be restored till the situation gets normal. On Thursday, Karra said other political parties should join Congress to fight for statehood. 'Congress will organise a series of protests for statehood from August 1. Even August 5 will be observed as black day and there will be a hunger strike on August 9,' Karra said while urging leaders and workers of other political parties to be part of this fight for statehood.
