Can the Washington Commanders trade for T.J. Watt without trading away their own contract-dispute star Terry McLaurin?

The wide receiver is coming off the best season of his six-year career in the nation's capital and it was also the team's most successful year in over three decades.
McLaurin was an integral part of Washington's high-powered offense, led by electrifying rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. As much as they would want to keep him, McLaurin could demand a top-of-the-market contract value that the Commanders may not feel comfortable with, especially as tensions have been high with the two parties for months.
This had led to endless speculation about McLaurin's trade potential. His value is as high as it's ever been, and Washington could scrape together much-needed financial flexibility to help the rest of the roster if they move on from McLaurin.
The pass rush is a major concern with the loss of a double-digit sack total in Dante Fowler Jr. Over in the AFC North, there's a notable edge rusher that has also been the center of holdout and trade discussions.

FOX Sports' David Helman linked the Commanders to potentially trade McLaurin to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for disgruntled edge rusher T.J. Watt, the 2021 Defensive Player of the Year.
"Why not indulge one delusional fantasy with another? If Washington were to trade Terry McLaurin, they'd be opening some financial wiggle room to add another lucrative player," Helman said.
"They could get at least two, if not three, years of play out of Watt before they have to worry about extending Jayden Daniels. They definitely need the pass rush help. Watt would give Dan Quinn a blue chip player, which he doesn't really have right now, on his Commanders' defense."
We say let's leave dealing Terry out of this ... because adding one great player while subtracting another really doesn't elevate Washington.

But ...
A move that allows the Commanders to add a cornerstone piece to the defense?
That works.
CBS Sports is suggesting that Washington should be on the five-team list of bidders for Watt, who is unhappy with his contract extension stall.
They write, "You can bet coach Dan Quinn would find a way to unleash Watt just as he did Micah Parsons with the Dallas Cowboys. This is a franchise focused on winning now, as evidenced by other offseason trades, and why not fork over big bucks to Watt while you have Jayden Daniels on a rookie deal? The pass rushing unit could still use a headliner, and Washington has plenty of cap space to use in 2026-2027.''

Except for the part about the Steelers having shown no indication about wanting to move on from a pillar of their franchise ...
Washington calling the Steelers makes sense on Watt. Right up until the time the Steelers ask for McLaurin.

Kevin Durant's Thoughts on Ace Bailey Comparison Earn a Big Reaction from the Rutgers Star

Kevin Durant's Thoughts on Ace Bailey Comparison Earn a Big Reaction from the Rutgers Star originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 NBA draft is quickly approaching and one of the biggest stars entering the draft is Rutgers Ace Bailey. Bailey had a tremendous freshman season, averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. His impressive performance has earned him comparisons to NBA star and Texas alumni Kevin Durant. Durant agreed when asked about the comparisons. Advertisement "Yeah, I think so," Durant said. "It's insane the shots he can make over multiple people at that length. It's incredible to watch. Him and his teammate Dylan Harper are playing some great ball. They're one of my favorite teams to watch. He's a problem, I can't wait to see his career grow." Former Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35).Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images In a post on the NBA Instagram account on Wednesday, Bailey was shown this clip and reacted. "That's hard," Bailey said. "I mean it feels good that one of the greats recognizes that about me. Hearing that from KD, that's everybody's favorite player, so him speaking on that to me is just like a blessing. Lets me know to just keep working. There's more to achieve." Advertisement Despite the comparison to Durant, there is speculation that Bailey could fall out of the top five of the 2025 NBA draft. A big reason for that is Bailey's decision not to work out with any NBA teams ahead of the draft. There is speculation from many media members that Bailey is trying to avoid some teams at the top of the draft while engineering the team he gets selected by. NBA Free-Agent Big Board: Deandre Ayton, welcome to the Lakers

It's been a wild couple of days of free agency, and now the Los Angeles Lakers have their new starting center. Deandre Ayton agreed to a two-year, $16.6 million deal to join LeBron, Luka and the gang, with L.A. hoping for more than just a trip to the first round of the playoffs. Advertisement But a lot will be expected of Ayton, and in that past that has been an issue As Yahoo Sports senior writer Dan Devine put it: "Nobody's ever questioned Ayton's physical tools: the bulk that can make him a bruising screen-setter and bull-in-a-china shop rebounder; the feathery touch on floaters, hooks and face-up jumpers from the midrange; the 7-foot-6 wingspan and 9-foot-3 standing reach that can make him a plus rim protector and interior impediment; the balance and agility that make him a fluid athlete in space on both ends. What still remains unclear, though, is whether he's capable of putting them all together with the level of commitment and seriousness of approach that can allow him, and a team that's not built around him, to make the best of use of all those tools and all that talent. Seven years after going first overall, a third team's going to give Ayton the chance to put it all together. Maybe the third time will be the charm." Best of luck, Lakers! Here you'll find our top 25 overall free-agent rankings and where players signed. This list bakes in contractual expectations — meaning value for the money — potential for younger players, risk of decline for older players, a premium on long-range shooters (hey, teams want them!) and injury history. To use an example, you'll find both Khris Middleton and Malcolm Brogdon in the 20s, primarily due to their general lack of availability in recent years. Had they played more, they would have been higher on the list. Advertisement Without further ado, let's get to it. Kevin Durant Sends Blunt Message About His Time With Thunder

Kevin Durant Sends Blunt Message About His Time With Thunder originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kevin Durant has been one of the biggest stars in the NBA for nearly 20 years. However, while he has had plenty of success on the court, including two NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors, Durant has been criticized for how much he has moved around in his career. With his recent trade to the Houston Rockets, Durant is joining his fifth NBA franchise. Advertisement On Tuesday, Kevin Durant appeared on a new episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast hosted by LeBron James and Steve Nash. In the episode, KD opened up about his time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. "I think we exceeded expectations with that team and when you reach the finals and you go through a run like that so quick, I don't think a GM or owner was ready for that. You sped up the timeline on all of us. Each individual player. My theory is they weren't exactly ready for us to be contenders every year. Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash and forward Kevin Durant (7)© Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images "I just think they were kinda shocked at how good we got so fast. Sometimes you get confused. On top of that, Sam Presti was 30 something years old. Everybody was young, trying to figure stuff out. It was too fast. We were ahead of our time." Advertisement That Oklahoma City team never went on to make another NBA Finals run. Harden was traded in 2012 and KD left in 2016. Before his NBA career started, Kevin Durant was a star for the Texas Longhorns.
