UFC confirms fight on White House lawn as Trump's birthday bash plan blurs line between politics and circus

WASHINGTON, July 5 — UFC plans to take its show to the White House when the United States puts on its 250th birthday celebration in 2026.
The UFC confirmed to The Athletic on Friday that plans are underway to host a slate of fights on the White House grounds in Washington DC, next year, with an expected summer date not specified.
The confirmation comes a day after President Donald Trump shared those intentions to an Iowa crowd.
'We're going to have a UFC fight, think of this, on the grounds of the White House,' Trump said. 'We have a lot of land there. ... We're going to have a UFC fight, championship fight, full fight.'
A friend of UFC president Dana White, Trump has regularly attended fights over the years, including taking in UFC 309 just days after being elected in November. He also attended fights in April and June.
After Trump made his comments to Iowa supporters, White reposted a video of the president's remarks on Instagram. He added the caption: 'This will be EPIC!!'
No further details about the 2026 fights, including how far along plans have become, were shared.
Should it come to fruition, it would become the first professional sporting event ever contested on White House grounds. — Reuters

Iran's Khamenei makes first public appearance since start of war with Israel

DUBAI, July 6 — Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attended a religious event yesterday, according to a video carried by state television, after reports that he was in a 'secure location' since the start of a 12-day air war with Israel in which top Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists were killed. The video carried by state media showed dozens attending a ceremony to mark Ashura, the holiest day of the Shi'ite Muslim calendar, standing chanting as Khamenei entered a hall where many government functions are held. For apparent security reasons, Khamenei had issued pre-taped messages during the war which started on June 13, and avoided public appearances. On June 26, in pre-recorded remarks aired on state television, Khamenei promised that Iran would not surrender despite US President Donald Trump's calls. — Reuters

‘Big, beautiful' betrayal: Musk forms ‘America Party' after torching Trump's tax plan

WASHINGTON, July 6 — The tattered bromance between Republican President Donald Trump and his main campaign financier Elon Musk took another fractious turn on yesterday when the space and automotive billionaire announced the formation of a new political party, saying Trump's 'big, beautiful' tax Bill would bankrupt America. A day after asking his followers on his X platform whether a new US political party should be created, Musk declared in a post yesterday that 'Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.' 'By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!' he wrote. The announcement from Musk comes after Trump signed his self-styled 'big, beautiful' tax-cut and spending Bill into law on Friday, which Musk fiercely opposed. Musk, who became the word's richest man thanks to his Tesla car company and his SpaceX satellite firm, spent hundreds of millions on Trump's re-election and led the Department of Government Efficiency from the start of the president's second term aimed at slashing government spending. The two have since fallen out spectacularly over disagreements about the Bill. Musk said previously that he would start a new political party and spend money to unseat lawmakers who supported the Bill. Trump earlier this week threatened to cut off the billions of dollars in subsidies that Musk's companies receive from the federal government. Republicans have expressed concern that Musk's on-again, off-again feud with Trump could hurt their chances to protect their majority in the 2026 midterm congressional elections. Asked on X what was the one thing that made him go from loving Trump to attacking him, Musk said: 'Increasing the deficit from an already insane US$2T under Biden to US$2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.' He referenced the growth of Greece from subjugation to preeminence in the ancient world in another tweet, saying: 'The way we're going to crack the uniparty system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield.' There was no immediate comment from Trump or the White House on Musk's announcement. The feud with Trump, often described as one between the world's richest man and the world's most powerful, has led to several precipitous falls in Tesla's share price. The stock soared after Trump's November reelection and hit a high of more than US488 (RM2,000) in December, before losing more than half of its value in April and closing last week out at US315.35. Despite Musk's deep pockets, breaking the Republican-Democratic duopoly will be a tall order, given that it has dominated American political life for more than 160 years, while Trump's approval ratings in polls in his second term have generally held firm above 40 percent, despite often divisive policies. — Reuters

‘My blood's still boiling': Kompany fumes after Musiala horror injury in Club World Cup Clash with PSG

ATLANTA, July 6 — Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany expressed his frustration after playmaker Jamal Musiala suffered a horror injury at the Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain yesterday. The 22-year-old Germany international fell and appeared to suffer a severe ankle injury after an innocuous collision in play with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during the French side's 2-0 quarter-final victory in Atlanta. Musiala was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Serge Gnabry for the second half. 'I've rarely been so angry at half-time, not against my players,' Kompany told reporters. 'There are many things in life that are much more important than this, but in the end, for these guys, it's their life. 'Someone like Jamal lives for this and he (recently) came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless.' Kompany said he wanted his Bayern side to try and find motivation in the injury against the European champions. 'You try and get strength out of it because you want to do it for Jamal,' explained the Belgian coach. 'When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment, it's not the result. 'I understand this is football, but it's the fact that it happened to someone that, for one, enjoys the game so much, but also is very important for us. 'It didn't look good... it looks like an ankle injury of some type, but I'm not going to make a diagnosis here.' PSG players also showed support for the youngster -- one of football's most promising young talents. 'A shout-out to Jamal Musiala, who suffered a serious injury, it's something you do not want to see on the field,' PSG defender Marquinhos told DAZN. 'It's important we talk about Jamal Musiala,' said Achraf Hakimi. 'I want to give my support to him. We hope to see him back on the pitch soon.' — AFP
