Jay Slater inquest reveals shocking info from 'fuming' voice note to knives claim
An inquest into the death of Jay Slater has resumed more than a year after the teenager fell to his death in a remote ravine in Tenerife.
The 19-year-old from Lancashire, disappeared on June 17, last year after attending the NRG music festival with friends on the Spanish island.
After a huge search which dominated headlines, his remains were found nearly a month later in steep, rocky terrain near the remote village of Masca.
The inquest started earlier this year but was paused, leaving key questions unanswered as Jay's mum Debbie Duncan urged key witnesses to come forward after they failed to show.
With the evidence due to be summarised this week, the Mirror has outlined the most damning new information which was revealed in today's hearing which can be found below.
Frantic phone call from 'middle of nowhere'
Jay Slater made a frantic phone call telling a pal 'I'm in the middle of nowhere… there is literally nothing but mountains' on the day he went missing.
Lucy Law - who travelled to Tenerife to party with Jay last summer - told the hearing she 'started panicking' after receiving the call. She told the hearing Jay asked her if cactuses were poisonous, with her replying: 'A cactus is the least of your problems, go back to where you have just come from.'
During the call Jay told her 'I can't go back there', but she said she didn't feel anything bad had happened, saying: 'I also feel like, if something had gone on in terms of conflict, I feel like he probably would have said.'
Key witnesses fail to show again
Coroner's officer Alice Swarbrick said despite exhaustive efforts key witnesses are yet to come forward. Steven 'Rocky' Roccas, who stayed at an Airbnb with Jay before he vanished, could not be located to attend today's hearing. Brandon Hodgson, a mutual friend of Ayub Qassim - a fellow Brit who was one of the last people to see him alive - also failed to show.
According to Lois Norris, a barrister representing Jay's family, Brandon appeared 'unwilling to give evidence' in a prior message thread.
Brandon, who is understood to be in Tenerife, was repeatedly served a summons at his Lancashire home by police. Multiple calls and voicemails went unanswered, and even after his mother, Natalie Hodgson, received a letter in person. Neither she nor Brandon responded further.
Steven 'Rocky' Roccas was contacted by Coroner's officer Alice Swarbrick on April 17 to provide a statement via email, but he soon stopped returning calls. Ms Swarbrick arranged visits by police officers at several London addresses, checked the Police National Computer, and checked voting records, but could not locate him.
Jay and pals may have taken things 'a bit too far'
Jay's friends have revealed they may have taken things 'a bit too far' while partying on their first boys holiday. When asked about Jay's behaviour during the trip, his pal Brad said: 'Well it was our first holiday as a boys' holiday so we might have took it a bit too far.'
Brad revealed that on the night of June 16, Jay consumed ecstasy and cocaine, and also took ketamine at some point during the holiday, though he was uncertain if it was that particular night.
He rated Jay's level of drunkenness at a six on a ten-point scale, describing him as 'giddy.' He said he and Jay were 'both just having a laugh with each other.'
Pal sent 'Fuming' voicenote to Jay before he disappeared
In the frantic moments on the night before Jay's disappearance, pal Lucy Law said she was struggling to locate him after he had gone to the toilet while at the NRG music festival. She said: 'We all split up to try and find him in the place but then none of us could find him in there so at this point our phones were nearly dead and he was still not answering his phone.'
The group then scoured the strip, with Lucy assuming he'd made friends or even found a girl to hang out with, as Jay was a 'social butterfly.'
Soon, he messaged saying 'I'm in Oasis,' and later mentioned being in Sugar Reef - located two or three clubs up - yet Lucy still couldn't find him. She then left him an angry voicemail saying: 'Where are you and what are you doing? I am coming down to get you. If you're not there this time I will be f**** fuming.'
Eventually, when Lucy found him, Jay casually said he wasn't ready to head home. 'There's no way I'm going home,' he told her. Ayub Qassim, a fellow Brit but not a hometown friend, later invited Jay to return to his rented Airbnb in the Tenerife mountain village of Masca.

Last person to see Jay alive - Ayub Qassim - slated during inquest hearing
Ayub Qassim, who is believed to have been the last person to see the Lancashire teen alive, offered his condolences to Jay's family during the inquest - but was scolded after he shifted the conversation by mentioning 'kids dying in Palestine.'
He said: "First and foremost I want to send my condolences to Jay's family. I want people to also think about the kids that are dying…' At which point he was told by the coroner: 'You are not here to make political statements.'
On the night before Jay vanished, Ayub said he partied with Jay until "5am pushing 6am maybe." Jay was "on the buzz," according to Ayub. 'Head bopping, chilled, happy. He was coherent.' He then offered to drop Jay home. Ayub said he told Jay: "Bearing in mind I live a bit far away but I'll drop you off in the morning if you want."
Jay decided to catch a bus back to his apartment after being advised by a local that one would be arriving in 10 minutes.
Pals deny speculation about knives and stolen watch
During the inquest, Jay's pals dismissed circulating rumors that he had stolen a watch and carried knives in his shorts. They said that they had no knowledge of any watch being taken, despite a Snapchat in which Jay supposedly boasted about taking an AP watch he was planning to sell.
Ayub said: 'When you're younger you might exaggerate things. But one hundred per cent I didn't see a watch getting taken, maybe he was just bigging himself up to his pals.' Lucy also said she had no recollection of any watch on the night, and that Jay had never mentioned one to her.
Addressing a separate rumour about Jay carrying two kitchen knives in his shorts, Brad was asked if this would be unusual. He answered 'yes,' adding nothing indicated Jay was ever distressed, scared, or agitated.
Emergency teams who found Jay reveal factors which contributed to his death
The mountain rescue team said there were several factors that led to Jay's tragic fall. They attributed his death to his lack of experience in mountainous terrain, recklessness, diminished physical fitness, and an overall absence of self-control alongside insufficient equipment for the conditions.
Adverse weather conditions and the inherent risk posed by loose, falling rocks were also mentioned as key elements that may have contributed to Jay's fall.

Portuguese police revealed today that the 18-year-old Brit had been robbed and hospitalised. The group is said to have stolen the victim's phone, worth around €600 (£525) Cops said five of the attackers - all aged 17 - have been arrested. Another four were identified by police. The violent crime occurred at the party resort of Albufeira. Two of the teenage suspects were filmed kicking their victim in the footage posted online. 'Girl, 13, said her brother made her pregnant - and thought it was normal'
Fred West was 19 when he got his own 13-year-old sister Kitty pregnant. Today schoolfriend Jean Korbi shares the most shocking part of the scandal: what they both said next KITTY West was just 13 when she confided in friends that she was pregnant. But it was not her boyfriend's. It was Fred's. Her brother Fred's. It was the same Fred West who would go on to become one half of the most notorious serial killer couple in recent history - a fiend who raped, killed and butchered young women for his own sexual kicks, then dismembered their bodies. But decade s before he and Rose West became infamous for their House of Horrors at 25 Cromwell Street, Fred was already heading down a very dark path...... Author, TV producer and former Mirror journalist Howard Sounes was first to cover the West murders for the Mirror in 1994 and went on to become a leading expert in the case. He recently conducted dozens of interviews and gained access to more than 100 hours of West's police interrogation recordings, for his new book, The Fred West Tapes: Secrets of the Fred & Rose West Murder Investigation. Adapted from The Fred West Tapes by Howard Sounes As a teenager Fred West was considered to be one of the 'handsomest' lads around. He was eyed as prime marriage material in a rural area where many girls aspired to marry young lest they be 'left on the shelf'. And yet, even from his earliest years there was a darkness within him. Foremost among his dark childhood secrets was the sad story of his sister Kitty, six years his junior. Their parents Walter and Daisy West were poor, semi-literate farm workers who lived by the seasons and could appear almost as ignorant as the beasts they tended. They lived in Herefordshire's village of Much Marcle, just half an hour by car from Gloucester, but a place lost in time with a sense of remoteness. There were eight children, two of whom died in infancy, leaving: Fred, John, Daisy, Doug, Kitty and Gwen. 'We were a very happy family ... Very close,' Fred told the police during the murder investigation in 1994, as revealed in the new transcripts. 'We all protected each other.' Few that knew them - like Kitty's schoolfriend Jean Korbi - would agree with that statement. In reality, Fred's mother wore a thick leather belt which she used to beat her children, a habit Rose West later adopted. His strict mum also banned girlfriends until he was 21, but his father offered different advice: 'Whatever you enjoy, do. And make sure you don't get caught doing it, you know?' Fred's daughter Mae later claimed: 'He [Dad] said it was a father's right to break his daughters in. According to him, that is what his father had done.' Speaking for the first time about her friend Kitty, Jean reveals the day she learned an awful secret. 'I'm pregnant,' Kitty, then 13, announced to a group of friends. They didn't know that Kitty had a boyfriend. 'Oh, it's not a boyfriend, me brother did it. Fred.' Fred, then 19, was eyed as quite the catch. 'He was one of the handsomest,' recalls Jean. 'He had a lovely smile, a nice wide smile, it lifted up his face. I had a schoolgirl crush on him..' But then she learned that same boy – that 'nice' boy – had made his younger sister pregnant. Jean thought the Wests a bit backward, but this was still a shock. 'I mean she [Kitty] was a bit Dolly Dimple,' says Jean. 'The whole family seemed a bit odd [but] I'd never heard of anything like incest, and then she proceeded to tell us how it was done, where it was done.' Kitty told them that she and Fred had sex in her bedroom, they did it 'lots of times'. She felt nervous at first. ''But Fred said because I'm his sister I wouldn't get pregnant'', Jean recalls her saying. Her friends suggested Kitty should have slapped Fred. 'She said, 'I wouldn't do that ... I quite like it', adds Jean. 'She seemed quite cool about it, 'It's normal, haven't you done it?' sort of thing.' Jean has never forgotten the conversation, adding: 'I remember it to this day, even where we were when she said it, because we were all in shock.' The story reached the local police, and in June 1961 a detective interviewed Kitty and West. 'Well, doesn't everyone do it?' West asked the officer. By the time West was brought before a judge, charged with incest, he pleaded not guilty, Kitty refused to testify and West walked free. The repercussions were significant. Kitty was expelled from school and had an abortion. She never got over it and died in 2006, haunted by her past. Also, Fred learned that he could commit a sexual offence and get away with it, even if the police became involved. Shortly after, he began dating a 14-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons. Despite getting his own sister pregnant, he was still popular. '[ Fred ] was still liked,' says Jean. 'All the teenage girls, his age group, they were all drooling ... a lot of girls were after him.' When the new girlfriend turned 15, Fred pulled over while driving her home one day and attacked her. 'He pushed me on the bank and raped me,' the girl later told police. The girl felt numb. '[I] just didn't know what to say.' Not long after this Fred raped her for a second time, at a flat. But she didn't report the matter to the police until the murder investigation in 1994. Once more Fred escaped without repercussions. His 20s would only get darker still. He fell for Scottish teen Catherine 'Rena' Costello, already pregnant with another man's child, married her, went to Glasgow, left her to prostitute herself to help make ends meet - and got himself work driving a Mr Whippy ice cream van. In 1965 he was on his round when he ran over and killed three-year-old Harry Feeney. His family are still adamant that it was not an accident as police had believed at the time. But whether intentional or not, at just 24, Fred was now a killer, a rapist, and had almost fathered his sister's child. Two years later, his 18-year-old mistress Anne McFall, went missing while eight months pregnant. Her body - and the body of Fred's unborn baby - would not be found for 27 years. Once again it could have stopped there - but it didn't. It later emerged Fred confessed to his father. He told Walter he had buried Anne's body on the edge of the woods and even took him to the site. 'I couldn't go up there on me own at that time,' Fred later told his solicitor. "So he walked up there with me. He said, 'Look, son, I'm your father, I'm not going to turn you in. If you can live with it then I'll say nothing.'' Walter told his wife Daisy who then told his brother John: 'Freddy's killed the girl [Anne] and buried her in Kempley Woods!' No one however told the police. If they had, Anne McFall may have been his only victim. Instead, Fred remained at large. And then….he met Rose. Howard Sounes helped break the West story and coin the term 'House of Horrors' for the Mirror in 1994, becoming an expert on the story. Airline denies removing 40 children from flight because they were Jewish

Spanish budget carrier Vueling insisted cabin crew were forced to eject a group of 52 passengers due to their 'highly disruptive behaviour' onboard. The children from the Club Kineret camp were returning to Paris after travelling to Valencia. The youth group has said it is has filed a formal complaint the airline, which is part of the group that owns British Airways, after it said cabin crew showed an 'antisemitic' attitude towards them. Video footage which circulated after the incident on Wednesday appeared to show one adult member of the party being detained by Guardia Civil officers on the jetbridge outside the aircraft. 'The facts are clear, serious, established and corroborated by multiple testimonies. They describe a scene of rare, unjustified and clearly biased brutality. 44 infants were disembarked from the aircraft, without a valid explanation, on orders of the captain onboard.' 'These children, supervised by 7 adults, had just completed a cultural stay. They were seated in their seats, respectful of the rules and the staff. No incident, no threat, no inappropriate behaviour was reported.' But Vueling said a decision was made to remove the group following behaviour which 'compromised the integrity of the flight', including tampering with emergency equipment and disrupting the safety demonstration. The airline said in a statement: 'The actions of the on-board staff were solely in response to behaviour that compromised the integrity of the flight, as well as the safety of passengers and the operation as a whole.' 'We categorically deny any suggestion that our crew's decision related to the religion of the passengers involved. 'This decision was taken solely to ensure the safety of all passengers. At Vueling, we categorically reject any form of discrimination without exception.' A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said the group was taken off the plane for repeatedly ignoring cabin crew instructions. It added that half the group boarded another flight that evening with another airline, while the rest stayed overnight at a hotel. The Federation of Spanish Jewish Communities said it was 'concerned' about the incident and demanded an explanation from Vueling as to how serious the childrens' behaviour was to be asked to leave the aircraft. It said: 'Airlines have responsibility to guarantee respect and dignity for all passengers, without exception. 'The FCJE believes that these types of incidents, which cause great worry and concern and affect minors, require clear and responsible institutional responses.' Further questions were raised after it transpired that the flight's captain, Ivan Chirivellas, had trained two terrorists involved in the September 11 attacks in 2001. Spain's Transport Minister Oscar Puente also came under fire for hisr response to the incident, in which he erroneously referred to the French youths as 'Israeli kids'. He wrote on X: 'Are the patriots with Vueling? Those with law and order with aviation safety? Or will they all stick together with the Israeli kids?'
