Morgan Gibbs-White misses start of Nottingham Forest pre-season camp in fresh twist to Spurs saga
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has not travelled with the squad for their pre-season camp in Portugal amid strong links with a move away from the club. Gibbs-White was set for a medical at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month after Spurs were understood to have triggered his £60m release clause. However, Forest accused Spurs of an allegedly illegal approach for Gibbs-White - contacting the player directly before going to the club - and the protracted saga has failed to move on the weeks since. Forest are currently considering legal action against Spurs. The England international has now made himself notable for his absence from the travelling Forest pack, but it understood that this is not transfer related. He has instead not travelled with the rest of the squad due to a personal reason and is expected he will join up with the team later in the week. Gibbs-White had already returned to pre-season training with Forest last Monday and has trained again with the club since. He also started Forest's 0-0 friendly draw with Chesterfield on Saturday at the SMH Group Stadium and played the first half. Forest will spend the next week-and-a-half in Portugal on a training camp and will play friendlies against Premier League side Fulham and Portuguese side Estoril Praia.

Liam Dawson to make England Test return after eight years in place of injured Shoaib Bashir
Liam Dawson will make his first Test appearance in eight years in place of the injured Shoaib Bashir as England look to seal a series win over India at Emirates Old Trafford. The 35-year-old played the last of his three Tests in July 2017, but he has been a star performer on the County Championship circuit with Hampshire and amassed 49 wickets in 2023 and a further 53 in 2024. He had drifted out of contention in England's red and white-ball sides in recent years, but Bashir breaking a finger on his non-bowling hand in the 22-run win at Lord's last week opened the door for Dawson. England have now confirmed their XI, as is now customary, two days out from the fourth Test and Dawson coming in for Bashir is the only change, with Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse retained. As well as being a shrewd left-arm spinner, Dawson, who returned to England's T20 side in their win over the West Indies last month, has 18 first-class hundreds and is a renowned as a fine fielder. Harry Brook said: '(Dawson) is a wily, old fox, very experienced and a very skilful cricketer. He's played everywhere, played against everyone so hopefully he can have an amazing performance this week. 'He's willing to always fight for the team, he's very competitive and it's good to have him here.' Dawson is set to slot into the batting order at number eight ahead of Woakes, who drops a spot but keeps his place in the team despite taking seven wickets at an average of 56.4 in the series. The 36-year-old got the nod ahead of Gus Atkinson partly because of his outstanding record in Manchester, where he averages nearly 37 with the bat and 17 with the ball in seven Tests. Atkinson had a fitness test on Monday and while he was considered to be available, England have erred against risking a fast bowler who has been on the sidelines since late May with a hamstring injury. Archer stays in the team after his starring role last week at the so-called home of cricket to put England 2-1 ahead with two to play, taking five wickets and bowling with plenty of pace and hostility. It was his first Test outing in four-and-a-half years and only his second red-ball match since the summer of 2021 but after a week off, England have no concerns about his readiness to go again. Meanwhile it is understood fellow express paceman Mark Wood's hopes of being available for the fifth Test have been dashed. Initially ruled out for four months following knee surgery in March, Wood rated himself as '50/50' for a potential decider at the Kia Oval, but he will now target the white-ball matches against South Africa later this summer for his England return.

Russell Martin wants ‘powerful' connection between his Rangers side and fans
Russell Martin believes Rangers will 'take some stopping' if they can harness an energy and connection between players, supporters and everyone else associated with the club. The Ibrox head coach is determined to ensure that process takes shape in his first match in charge against Panathinaikos on Tuesday. Rangers take on the Greek side in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round at Ibrox and Martin hopes fans can quickly see the dominant, intense, aggressive team that forms his vision for his reign. The former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton manager said: 'Every day I wake up and I'm honoured to be in this position. I feel extremely grateful for it. I'm excited by it and I will give it absolutely everything I've got. We all will. 'That's what this club demands, what the people demand, what the supporters demand, who will outstay all of us. I just want to put a team on the pitch that they are proud of. 'It has to start (on Tuesday) and they have to see something to be excited about and we have to see something to be excited about. The players have to feel something to be excited about and it's an amazing opportunity and game to do that. 'What we've seen in training has been amazing. They've come with fresh energy, with willingness and openness to new ideas, to new demands, to maybe different rules to what they've had before and they've been great the way they've embraced it. 'And now the biggest challenge for them is to do it in front of 50,000 people with a game that means so much to so many people. And, for any football player, I think it's the biggest test to be yourself in those situations. 'What we have seen over the last four weeks, the more chance we have of being successful. I hope they play with the same freedom, enjoyment and aggression and willingness to run. 'For the team, it will accelerate the learning. That will improve, whatever happens, there's no doubt about it. 'But I think one of the things that has to come out is that the supporters will leave feeling positively about their team, their new-look team, the way it's going to start to shape up. 'We'll be by no means the finished articled, there's a lot of work that needs to go in, but in four weeks from what we've seen to now, the group has been great and they have to put that on the pitch. 'I hope that the fans will leave feeling excited about what's to come and (there will) start being a real connection. Because I think if we can be connected, the whole club, Ibrox, here, the supporters, if this club has that, with that energy, I think it's going to take some stopping. I think it's really powerful. 'But we have to all believe in something and that will be how much the players are willing to win, the hunger, the character, the desire to show. And I'm confident that we'll see that.' Martin's demand that his team play out from the back will ensure a different style to what Rangers fans have been accustomed to and the former Scotland hopes they can buy into that process. 'There will be times where it won't require much patience and there will be times where it will,' he said. 'It's not all going to be plain sailing, there will be some bumpy moments but we have to make sure that everyone can understand and see what we are trying to achieve and that the team has enough moments that people can feel excited about.'
