NORMAN — OU football has reportedly added a fifth quarterback to its roster.
Former Norman North standout Gavin Frakes, who spent two seasons at New Mexico State and last season at Virginia, is set to transfer to the Sooners, according to a report Thursday from OUInsider.

Frakes made five starts for New Mexico State in 2022 but didn't see action in 2023. He also didn't play for the Cavaliers in 2024 and has two years of eligibility remaining.
Frakes served as Norman North's starting quarterback as a senior in the fall of 2021 and was a top-100 class of 2022 prospect in Oklahoma. Frakes led the Timberwolves to a 7-4 record and finished the regular season with 2,992 all-purpose yards and 32 touchdowns.
Frakes joins John Mateer, Michael Hawkins Jr., Whitt Newbauer and Jett Niu as quarterbacks on the Sooners' roster.
Frakes is OU's seventh spring transfer portal addition, joining Newbauer (Mercer), wide receiver Jer'Michael Carter (McNeese State), defensive tackle Siolaa Lolohea (Utah State), offensive lineman Jake Maikkula (Stanford), running back Jaydn Ott (Cal) and kicker Tate Sandell (UTSA).

Left out. The five biggest snubs in the US LBM preseason college football coaches poll

The voters in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll have weighed in, and the Top 25 is now out for fans and pundits to debate until they actually take the field in a few weeks. Preseason polls are speculative, of course, and trying to figure out which teams aren't ranked but perhaps should be is even more of a crapshoot. To further clarify, none of the five teams listed here were truly snubbed, as they were all mentioned on multiple ballots. But here are a few notable programs that will start the season outside the poll but might at some point be ranked. TEXAS ON TOP: Longhorns lead preseason poll for first time OUTLOOKS: Breaking down every Top 25 team in poll Oklahoma The Sooners nearly gave the SEC a record 10th team in the top 25, missing the rankings by just 25 poll points. Unlike some teams on this list, however, OU will have ample opportunities to prove its worthiness of receiving poll votes, starting in Week Two when the Sooners take on No. 14 Michigan. Most of the issues in Norman for the last couple of seasons have been on the offensive side of the ball, so OU's long-term staying power this season will largely hinge on the performance of transfer quarterback John Mateer. Utah Our coaches poll panelists had widely varied opinions on the Utes, ranging from top 10 to off the ballot altogether. Utah can usually be counted on to field a competent defense, even if coach Kyle Whittingham is nearing the end of a highly successful career. The issue over the last couple of years has been quarterback instability as Cam Rising never was able to get back on the field. The hope is that situation has now been addressed with the arrival of New Mexico transfer Devon Dampier. With several quality teams but no true juggernauts, the Big 12 offers opportunities for improvement. Iowa Stop us if you've heard this one before – The Hawkeyes seemingly win 8-to-10 games every year and could possibly do even more with just a slight uptick in offensive production. The hopes in Iowa City this year rest with Mark Gronowski, who arrives after putting up huge numbers at Championship Subidivision power South Dakota State. If the defense and kicking game continue to be strengths, watch out. Georgia Tech In case you've forgotten – and it seems some of the voters have – this team was just a play away from derailing Georgia in the regular-season finale and causing massive disruptions in the playoff picture. Unlike the teams noted above, the Yellow Jackets are set at QB. Haynes King, whose collegiate career began at Texas A&M, can be one of the top signal callers in the ACC when healthy, and his backfield mate Jamal Haynes is also back. The issue now is developing more depth around them and coming up with just a few more defensive stops. Memphis We could have designated this entry to the entire American Conference, none of whose members got enough support from the voters to make the preseason poll. The Tigers were featured in this space a year ago and did in fact win 11 games but came up short of the conference title. Ryan Silverfield and his staff certainly know how to develop talent, but the offense is in need of a complete rebuild with mainstay QB Seth Henigan and a slew of other starters lost to graduation. The schedule is manageable, however, so Memphis could string together enough wins to pick up a ranking at some point during the season.

Where does Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium rank among College Football's best?

The SEC is home to some of the best college football venues in the sport. When OU and Texas made the move to the SEC back in 2024, they moved into a super-sized league. Texas had the largest capacity, and Oklahoma was No. 2 in the old Big 12. But now, they're in good company with some fantastic home environments. In a league that coined the phrase, "It just means more," the SEC puts that on display every Saturday on college campuses. The SEC is home to 11 of the top 20 stadium capacities in college football, which makes those gameday atmospheres incredible to witness. Oklahoma's Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is the home to one of the blue bloods of college football and the backdrop for some of the best players to ever play the game. But where does GFOMS rank among the best stadiums in college football? USA TODAY Sports college football writers Blake Toppermeyer and Paul Myerburg ranked the top 25 stadiums in college football, and OU's home field came in at 11. A touch smaller than other SEC colossuses with a capacity of 80,126, the "Palace on the Prairie" still more than holds its own. (Seven national title banners hanging inside help deliver that message.) The Sooner Schooner cruising the field paints a scene fit for one of the nation's premier football conferences. - USA TODAY Sports The Oklahoma Sooners have won seven national championships and seven Heisman Trophy winners. They've won a lot of games in Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium. In 2024, the Sooner faithful showed the type of atmosphere they can provide in their first SEC home game against Tennessee, even though it was a loss, and in Oklahoma's huge upset win over Alabama in November. Tiger Stadium, home to the LSU Tigers, came in at No. 1 on the list. Oklahoma witnessed firsthand what that environment, especially at night, can do to a team. This year, the Sooners will play three away games in stadiums that made the list. Tennessee's Neyland Stadium came in at No. 6, Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium ranked No. 8, and South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium came in at No. 17. Much of Oklahoma's success in 2025 will depend on how they handle those road environments. Oklahoma, in turn, will provide a great home atmosphere for tough matchups against Michigan, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Missouri. Oklahoma coach Brent Venables makes stunning confession on team's QB play last season

It was a Murphy's Law type of season Oklahoma experienced in 2024 - particularly on the offensive side of the ball. What possibly could go wrong did. The offense struggled to score while dealing with a slew of injuries, particularly at wide receiver and on the line. Jackson Arnold, who was anointed as the person counted on to continue the Sooners' grand lineage of quarterback play going back to the turn of the century, was benched in their very first SEC game. They set a single-season school record for sacks allowed. The woeful performance eventually cost Seth Littrell his job midway through his first season as offensive coordinator. And, perhaps fittingly, a chance to salvage a winning season and a bowl game trophy went awry when Oklahoma failed to convert on a potential game-winning two-point conversion in its Armed Forces Bowl loss to Navy. But after Brent Venables - entering his fourth season as OU head coach - received his very first question during his appearance at Wednesday's SEC Media Days in Atlanta, he immediately made a confession. Venables admitted that he put both Arnold and freshman Michael Hawkins Jr., who replaced Arnold as OU's starting quarterback, in a bad spot due to the litany of injuries on offense, particularly at receiver. 'Certainly, it's hard to get a first down or two (with several receivers injured),' Venables said. 'But I take this moment just to say what type of a future that Jackson Arnold and Mike Hawkins (have), both of those guys put in a really tough spot as first-year players. It's a supporting cast that you know they can't play quarterback by themselves and ended up putting them in a really tough position, based on what happened, and both of them are going to be incredibly successful in the future. 'But that made it really difficult, and no excuses. What you would ideally like to see on any given Saturday, if you're going to be competitive and have a chance to win as an offense and a defense and in special teams that complement one another, not compensate for one another, and when you give the ball back more than you take it from the opponent. I know it's hard to win.' Arnold, of course, moved on from Oklahoma after the season, transferring to SEC rival Auburn. Hawkins did stay with the Sooners, but appears to be the backup to new starting QB John Mateer, the Washington State transfer. Sporting News:What Auburn and former Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold said about his return to Oklahoma But if Hawkins finds himself under center for the Sooners in a key situation, hopefully for OU fans, he will have a healthy assortment of teammates, especially receivers, at his disposal.
