Kuala Lumpur: The government is considering introducing a basic insurance scheme to help reduce the impact of rising medical costs, says finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan. He said a joint committee had been established involving the finance ministry, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the health ministry, and several related agencies. 'Among our efforts is the Reset programme to explore how we can create a basic insurance scheme for Malaysians,' he said after launching a RM211 million SME Bank initiative to support the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises. 'The proposal is at the discussion stage to ensure that its implementation is beneficial and will not burden any party.' The minister said those involved in developing the scheme included insurance and takaful operators and financial sector representatives. 'Once we are ready, we will announce the implementation model. We are also open to suggestions, including models like the Social Security Organisation. The priority is to develop a product that truly meets the needs of Malaysians,' he said. He was responding to questions on the government's proposal to allow withdrawals from EPF Account 2 to pay health insurance premiums.

Anwar holds discussions with Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer
RIO DE JANEIRO: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today held discussions with Brazilian aerospace company Embraer SA to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia. The prime minister, who met with Embraer president and chief executive Francisco Gomes Neto, emphasised the government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem through investor-friendly policies, local talent development, and high-impact technology partnerships. This is in line with the aspiration to make Malaysia a major aerospace hub, particularly in Asean, which has a highly-skilled workforce and an industry ecosystem which is robust and competitive. "Our discussions touched on the potential for Embraer to invest in Malaysia, including through collaborations with Malaysian airlines. "Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's participation in developing a maintenance, repair and overhaul centre, pilot training and supply chains, as well as low-carbon emission aircraft innovations, in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Master Plan 2030," said Anwar. He said he also appreciated Embraer's interest in strengthening cooperation with the defence sector through initiatives that can enhance the Malaysian armed forces' air mobility capabilities. The government, he said, was committed to ensuring that any form of cooperation would bring high-value jobs, the transfer of technology and inclusive economic growth for Malaysians. Anwar is in Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit today and tomorrow. Malaysia's participation in the summit is as a BRICS partner nation and as Asean chair. Malaysia became a BRICS partner nation on Jan 1. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil grew by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion in 2024, from RM17.43 the year before. This maintained Brazil's position as one of Malaysia's main trading partners in Latin America.

JS-SEZ development to spur emergence of satellite towns
KLUANG — The development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is expected to benefit not only areas surrounding Johor Bahru but also be felt across all 10 districts in the state, said Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He said the initiative would lead to the emergence of more satellite towns, ensuring that no district is left behind in terms of infrastructure and progress. In addition to driving economic growth, JS-SEZ would also serve as a catalyst for the tourism sector, positioning Johor as a major destination, he noted. The state government, he said, would seize the opportunity to promote attractions throughout Johor in conjunction with the upcoming Visit Johor Year. 'Bit by bit, areas surrounding JS-SEZ are beginning to experience the spillover effects of development. For example, the areas of Simpang Renggam and Renggam in Kluang are already seeing its impact. This progress will gradually expand to other districts. 'If Seremban is known as a satellite city to the Klang Valley, we expect Kluang to become one of the main satellite cities as a result of the JS-SEZ development,' he said at the launch of the Majestic Johor x Renggam Fiesta at Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) Renggam today. The JS-SEZ covers major development zones such as Iskandar Malaysia, Forest City, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, and Desaru, with a total land area of approximately 357,128 hectares. The Iskandar Malaysia region also includes strategic areas such as Johor Bahru City Centre, Iskandar Puteri, Tanjung Pelepas–Tanjung Bin, Pasir Gudang, Senai–Skudai, and Sedenak. Further commenting, Onn Hafiz said that rapid development in the transport sector would also support connections between districts and the JS-SEZ, including the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project and the Gemas–Johor Bahru Double Track Electrified Project. 'All these projects will enhance connectivity between Johor's districts and the key areas within the JS-SEZ, and the development will be carried out in phases,' he added. — BERNAMA

Carnival strengthens financial literacy outreach in Tawau
BNM Deputy Governor Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid stopping at one of the 21 exhibition booths during his walkabout at Karnival Celik Kewangan Tawau. TAWAU (July 6): The Financial Education Network (FEN) successfully hosted its flagship Karnival Celik Kewangan (KCK) in Tawau for the first time on July 5 and 6. The event brought together more than 6,000 visitors offering a range of engaging and practical activities designed to promote financial literacy and empower communities to better manage their finances. The event was officiated by Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid, Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and Co-Chair of the FEN, who emphasised the growing importance of financial literacy in today's economic and digital landscape. 'With the many economic uncertainties, and the fast pace of technological change, managing one's finances is no longer a luxury – it is a necessary life skill that underpins the stability of individuals, families, and communities,' he said. A key feature of KCK Tawau was a 24-hour financial literacy livestream on TikTok, jointly organised by mySalam, FEN, and the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA), with a total of 3.2 million likes and 12,000 comments within 24 hours. The livestream offered continuous, interactive content on a wide range of financial topics, reaching new audiences and making financial education more accessible and more relatable. This initiative obtained recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records. In line with the event's holistic approach, KCK also featured the MTA Takaful4All Fun Run, aimed at promoting not only financial health but also physical well-being. The run drew strong participation from 570 local community members, reinforcing the message that a secure future depends not just on smart money management, but also on taking care of one's health. KCK Tawau marked the finale of a week-long financial literacy roadshow across various localities in Sabah, including Lahad Datu, Kunak, Pulau Bum Bum in Semporna and Tawau. These engagements allow FEN to provide practical financial guidance – on budgeting, insurance and takaful, debt management and consumer protection – while also gathering valuable feedback on the unique financial challenges faced by local communities. These insights will help shape future outreach and targeted interventions to strengthen financial resilience in the region. The success of the KCK Tawau is a testament to the tireless efforts and collaboration of FEN members, associate members and partners. From content development to community engagement, the team demonstrated its commitment to delivering relevant, accessible, and meaningful financial education. 'KCK Tawau reflects what FEN stands for – bringing financial literacy to life in ways that are practical, inclusive and people centred. The FEN remains committed to ensuring efforts to empower the rakyat are carried out inclusively and continuously,' added Adnan. Established in November 2016, FEN serves as an inter-agency platform to increase the impact of financial education initiatives and identify new opportunities to elevate financial literacy among Malaysians through greater alignment, closer collaboration and a strong focus on impact assessments. Its members include the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Bank Negara Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia, Employees Provident Fund, Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit, Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia and Permodalan Nasional Berhad.
