Red alert in five Kerala districts as heavy rains batter northern region
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 19 (PTI) The IMD on Saturday issued a 'red alert' for five northern districts of Kerala, where incessant rains lashed several towns and high-range areas, causing inundation and traffic snarls.
The red alert, which predicts 'extremely heavy rainfall", was issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.
Districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad were placed under an 'orange alert', warning of 'heavy rainfall", as per the latest update from the weather agency.
In light of the 'extreme rainfall warning", the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued guidelines on precautions to be taken during emergencies.
In the northernmost district of Kasaragod, the district administration has advised strict safety measures in schools to prevent monsoon-related accidents, sources said.
Both Wayanad and Kozhikode experienced intense rainfall throughout Friday night, although there was a slight respite on Saturday morning.
District authorities in Kozhikode are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to evacuate people living in high-altitude areas and those near water bodies to safer locations if necessary.
According to figures from the State Agriculture Department, Kozhikode district alone has reported a significant crop loss of Rs 44 crore due to the widespread rains received since May.
A 'red alert' indicates 'heavy to extremely heavy rainfall" of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an 'orange alert' signifies 'very heavy rainfall" between 11 cm and 20 cm. PTI LGK SSK

52.8°C And Rising: Iran's Deadly Heatwave Sparks 'Irreversible' Water Crisis
Last Updated: Iran faces its hottest week with temperatures above 50°C as authorities urged water conservation and declared emergency holidays. Iranian authorities called on the public to curb water consumption as the country faced its hottest week of the year and a deepening water crisis. With temperatures soaring above 50°C in most parts of the country, officials declared emergency holidays, reduced water supplies in some regions and begun negotiations with neighbouring countries to import water. According to Iran's national meteorological service, the southwestern city of Shabankareh recorded a staggering temperature of 52.8°C- potentially the hottest temperature globally so far this year. Other cities, including Abadan and Ahwaz, also reported extreme highs, while the capital Tehran reached 41°C. The soaring temperatures come amid a prolonged five-year drought that has pushed Iran's water infrastructure to its limits. Hundreds of dams built since the 1950s have seen reduced output further straining water and electricity supplies. Abbas Aliabadi, Iran's minister of energy, said that the government is in talks with Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to explore options for importing water. Power cuts have become increasingly frequent due to the heat and depleted water reservoirs needed for hydroelectric energy. Iran government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced a public holiday for Wednesday in Tehran province to help conserve power and water. A Tehran resident told The Guardian that the heat has become physically unbearable. He said, 'I feel the skin is going to burn. My shirt gets wet so quickly and I prefer to take a shower twice a day at this age amidst severe heat. Thank God, there is no water crisis where I live." Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the crisis during a cabinet meeting and issuing a stark warning. He said, as per state media, 'The water crisis is more serious than what is being discussed today and if we do not take urgent action now, we will face a situation in the future for which no remedy can be found. In the water sector, beyond management and planning, we also need to address excessive consumption." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi Weather: Heavy rain lashes national capital, waterlogging reported – check IMD's forecast
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Tuesday, providing much-needed relief from the extreme heat. However, many areas experienced problems of waterlogging and traffic congestion. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain throughout the day, forecasting a "generally cloudy sky with moderate rain." The weather agency has also predicted more showers for tomorrow. Waterlogging was reported in parts of south and southwest Delhi after fresh rainfall, causing slow-moving traffic and flooded streets, commuters said. Visuals from the Sangam Vihar area showed vehicles plying on flooded streets. A bike also got stuck in a waterlogged area, with the rider trying to move his vehicle. Schoolchildren were seen slowly crossing the waterlogged street, which made movement difficult for them. Visuals also emerged showing rainwater flowing down the stairs of the Parliament building, while vehicles moved past in the background. Meanwhile, due to the downpour, the Opposition's planned protest at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament building under the banner of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign was postponed. Officials said the demonstration would now be held after the House is adjourned for the day. The weather department has stated that the temperature in Delhi will vary between 36 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius over the next seven days, until July 28. According to the IMD, the city will experience generally cloudy skies with very light to light or moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning, over the next seven days.

5-year-old girl drowns in pond in South Tripura after heavy rain
A five-year-old girl drowned in a pond in Tripura's Santirbazar area on Monday after heavy rain lashed South Tripura district, the revenue department's State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said in a report on Tuesday. The SEOC identified the deceased girl as Alina Tripura, a resident of Srikanta Para of the Srikanta Bari ADC village under the Jolaibari RD block. Local people noticed her body in the pond and recovered it, according to the report. The government has provided the deceased girl's family with Rs 5,000 as interim compensation, the SEOC added. The rain had led to the water level rising in the Muhuri, Feni, and Lawgang rivers in South Tripura district. However, according to latest reports, the water level is going down in all rivers in the area and relief camps are not needed. Earlier this month, four cases of drowning were reported from West Tripura and Unakoti districts. Nearly two weeks ago, over 800 people in South Tripura district had to shift to relief camps following incessant rain. Last year, devastating floods cost 38 lives, affected over 17 lakh people, and caused damage worth Rs 15,000 crore in road connectivity, power transmission, flood management infrastructure, households, public infrastructure, livestock, and agriculture.
