Education an effective approach to address drug issue, says Deputy Minister
He said that based on observations and studies conducted, individuals with higher education are less likely to be involved in drug abuse.
"We already have the National Social Council that addresses this issue in a compressive manner…education remains the most crucial factor in preventing and eradicating drug abuse.
"If possible, we want to ensure as many children as possible receive the highest level of education so that they can secure employment.
"When a person is employed, they are more likely to be occupied with positive pursuits,' he said during the Bicara Qiadi session at the 2025 National Leadership Gathering, hosted by the Education Ministry's Islamic Education Sector at Pantai Cahaya Bulan on Saturday (June 21) night.
On June 18, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed concern over the rampant drug and vape abuse among youths, particularly young Malays, stressing that the matter needs a comprehensive solution involving various approaches, including counselling and religious outreach (dakwah).
Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the meeting involving all religious agencies and institutions under the ministry regarding the issue of Sisters in Islam (SIS), Zulkifli said: "We've referred the matter to the minister's office, (the outcome of the meeting) was positive because the discussion took into account a comprehensive perspective," without explaining further.
On Thursday (June 19), a Federal Court panel, in a 3-1 majority decision, ruled that the fatwa issued by the Selangor Fatwa Committee in 2014, which the Selangor government subsequently gazetted, is valid but applies only to individuals, not to companies.
The court ruled that a fatwa cannot be enforced against an organisation such as SIS Forum, as it does not possess the capacity to profess or embrace any religion, which effectively allowed part of the appeal filed by SIS Forum and its co-founder, Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar, to nullify the 2014 fatwa which declared the group as deviant from Islamic teachings. - Bernama

Acting Chief Justice calls for urgent Judicial Appointments Commission meeting
PETALING JAYA: Acting Chief Justice Datuk Seri Hasnah Hashim has called for an urgent meeting of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), according to reports. A report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), citing unnamed sources, stated that the meeting is scheduled for 3pm today (July 4), despite Section 13(2) of the JAC Act 2009 requiring at least 10 days' written notice to be given to commission members. Hasnah, who assumed her duties yesterday following the mandatory retirement of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, now chairs the commission by virtue of her position as the nation's top judge. "The purpose of the urgent meeting is unclear," a source was quoted as saying in the report. The JAC, which is tasked with recommending candidates for appointments to the Federal Court, Court of Appeal and High Courts, currently has only seven members. This follows the recent retirements of Tengku Maimun and Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim. In addition to Hasnah, the current members include Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who sits on the commission by virtue of his position. Other members, appointed as eminent persons by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, are former attorney-general Tan Sri Idrus Harun, retired Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Zainun Ali, former Sarawak attorney-general Datuk Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) legal adviser Hartini Saripan. Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Zabariah Yusof was also appointed to the commission in March by the prime minister. According to FMT, sources said a list of nominees for the country's top judicial posts, including the chief justice, president of the Court of Appeal, chief judge of Malaya and chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak had already been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office during Tengku Maimun's tenure. Under Article 122B(1) of the Federal Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of the prime minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers. The next meeting of the Conference of Rulers is scheduled to take place in two weeks.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the establishment of KUS is not merely the creation of a new entity, but a strong reflection of the government's commitment to fast-track development, streamline utility coordination and attract fresh investments into Sabah. 'KUS has been mandated to function as a one-stop agency to expedite utility work permit processes and develop a comprehensive state-wide utility asset database,' he said in his keynote address delivered by Datuk Abidin Madingkir, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, at the official launch at Marriott Hotel on Friday. He noted that this initiative aligns with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, which prioritises inclusive development and the delivery of services that are efficient, transparent and future-ready. With the integration of digital technology and a unified utility mapping system under KUS, Hajiji said project approvals will be accelerated, overlapping of work can be reduced, and field safety will be enhanced. 'This approach will have a significant impact not just on the smooth execution of government and private sector projects, but also supports Sabah's digitalisation agenda, investment competitiveness and smart city development,' he said. He added that this is a clear example of how public-private sector synergy can yield high-impact solutions for the people. Hajiji also emphasised that improved coordination of utility processes would unlock more areas for development, which in turn would stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. Zabariah assumes duties as Court of Appeal president

In a letter dated yesterday, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, who is assuming the powers and duties of the Chief Justice, said Zabariah's appointment, effective yesterday, is made under Section 9 (3) (a) of the Court of Judicature Act 1964. Advertisement According to the letter, she is to exercise the powers and duties of the Court of Appeal president until the position is permanently filled. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, Federal Court Chief Registrar Datuk Zamri Bakar and Court of Appeal Registrar Jumirah Marjuki. Zabariah was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner and later served at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on January 5, 2009. She was confirmed as a High Court judge on Aug 9, 2010, and on Jan 2, 2013, was assigned to the Seremban High Court. In 2016, she returned to serve as a High Court judge at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. Zabariah was appointed as a Court of Appeal Judge on March 21, 2016, and as a Federal Court judge on Dec 5, 2019. She turned 66 last April 10, but was given a six-month extension. In March, Zabariah was appointed as a member of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC).
