Air India Toronto-Delhi flight diverted to Frankfurt due to clogged toilets

PTI sources within the airline revealed that flight AI188's diversion was necessary because several toilets were non-functional.
On May 2, Air India flight AI188's non-stop service from Toronto to Delhi landed in Frankfurt citing technical difficulties. "The flight resumed its journey to Delhi from Frankfurt after approximately two hours," stated the Air India representative.
The service utilised a Boeing 7770-337 (ER) aircraft, according to Flightradar24.com tracking data.
The aircraft had been in service for 15.8 years, as documented by Planespotters.net.
A report indicated that Air India faces challenges with long-distance flights due to its ageing fleet and passenger conduct.
This incident marked the second occurrence in under two months where an
due to toilet blockages. Previously, on March 6, flight AI126 travelling from Chicago to Delhi returned after more than 10 hours in the air because of similar issues.
On March 10, Air India released a comprehensive statement regarding the March 6 Chicago-Delhi flight incident.
The crew reported malfunctioning toilets in both Business and Economy sections approximately one hour and forty-five minutes into the journey. "Eventually, eight out of twelve aircraft toilets became non-functional, causing passenger discomfort," stated the airline regarding flight AI126.
The airline subsequently requested passengers to "use lavatories appropriately" and disclosed finding items including blankets, undergarments, and nappies flushed down toilets on various flights.

The majority of wide-body aircraft serving US and Canadian routes are older, leading to recurring plumbing issues. The aged, interconnected pipe system means a single waste tank blockage affects half the aircraft's toilets. Wide-body aircraft typically feature two waste tanks connected to the toilet pipes, the source explained.
Additionally, the certain passengers are seen to carelessly dispose of rubbish in toilets, causing blockages.

Agency: Hyderabad, Jul 31 (PTI) The next time when you walk into Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGAI) here, don't be surprised if you're greeted by a friendly puppy or even get a chance to pet one. The GMR Group, which manages the airport, has introduced a 'Therapy Dog Program" aimed at enhancing the passenger experience. The initiative offers calming and joyful interactions, with the belief that the presence of dogs–Toy Poodles in this case– can ease travel-related anxiety, uplift moods, and create a more welcoming and peaceful airport environment, according to RGIA sources. Currently, the program which features four well-trained Toy Poodles and accompanied by professional handlers, is in its early stages, and future expansion may be considered based on passenger feedback and operational feasibility, they said. 'The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Passengers have appreciated the calming presence of the dogs. The initiative has been well-received as a thoughtful and comforting addition to the airport experience," sources told PTI. While the dogs are certified therapy animals and trained for calm behavior, they are always under the supervision of professional handlers. These handlers are equipped to manage any unexpected behavior and ensure the safety and comfort of both the dogs and passengers, they further said. A passenger who did not want to be identified said, 'I was so happy to see them." 'It already feels like I'm beginning to heal. A truly wonderful initiative. Please keep up the amazing work. And a special thanks to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for helping fund and facilitate this incredible effort." Having a pet dog brings so much joy and the initiative was a thoughtful and heartwarming one which deserves true appreciation, the passenger added. They are stationed at key touch points in both domestic and international departure areas from Friday to Monday, (1500 hours-1900 hours) for approximately four hours. Delhiites would soon get an opportunity to experience hot air balloon rides. Officials said on Thursday that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has finalised an agency to conduct the adventure activity at four locations. "After careful consideration, the four locations have been selected for the initial start of the project," the official was quoted by news agency PTI as saying. 2. Two other sites along the Yamuna Bank at Asita and Baansera The Commonwealth Games Village along the banks of the Yamuna River is spread across a vast space of around 100 acres. It was constructed as a residence for athletes during the Commonwealth Games in 2010. It is located near Akshardham temple. Meanwhile, the Yamuna Sports Complex, situated in Surajmal Vihar, was also constructed for the games. It is the biggest sports complex developed by DDA. The DDA will provide 3600 sqm of space at each site for the operation of tethered hot air balloons, which will be tied to a rope at one end on the ground. "This project will promote eco-tourism and recreational activities and provide a unique aerial perspective of the national capital and its landscape. The entire concept has been visualised under the guidance and supervision of Lt Governor VK Saxena," a statement from the DDA read. As per the report, the agency will likely commence operations in two months' time. Four hours of flying time will be allowed every day. The private company will be operating on a revenue-sharing model, and the agency will be allowed to advertise on the balloons. The DDA said in a statement that to ensure transparency and proper record keeping, "all proceeds from ticketing will be credited to DDA's account." The price of the hot-air balloon rides will be decided by the firm. However, the DDA has directed them to keep the tickets at a reasonable price. The development came as the DDA is extensively working on the Rejuvenation of the River Yamuna and the state. The aim is to develop Yamuna Front into a tourism and culture hub. Also, ferry service is being developed on the Yamuna River on a four- to six-km stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. This project also aims to develop tourism in the state. An MoU was signed between the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the departments of the Delhi government.
