‘Stop, play, pause': Over 12k nuisance cases in 2 years as DMRC battles reel-ity check in trains
NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man was arrested in April for creating a ruckus inside a
Delhi Metro
train by drinking alcohol and eating eggs. It eventually turned out it was only in pretence in an attempt to go viral on social media.
It is not the lone instance. Delhi Metro has recorded over 12,000 cases of unacceptable behaviour in the past two years. Botherations include passengers making reels, littering, quarrelling and misbehaving with train staff.
The latest Delhi Metro Rail Corporation data shows 6,169 cases of nuisance in the 2024-25 financial year and 6,183 in 2023-24, most of them falling under Section 59 of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act.

Apart from such nuisance, the network also recorded 745 cases in 2024-25 of unlawful entry and walking on metro tracks, prohibited under Section 64 of the DMRC Act. The number of such cases was 1,043 in 2023-24.
In the past few years, there has been a spate of videos on social media showing passengers recording reels inside the trains and at stations, causing inconvenience to other commuters.
"DMRC expects its commuters to behave responsibly while using the Delhi Metro and follow all social etiquette and protocols that are acceptable in society," said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC.
"Commuters should also follow prevalent dos and don'ts while travelling by metro for their own and co-passengers' safety, comfort and convenience. They shouldn't indulge in any activity that is against the rules and regulations.
"
Dayal said that from time to time, DMRC launched special awareness drives on this matter. "Offenders are liable for penalty or removal from the metro train under the Operations & Maintenance Act," he added.
Though DMRC has been running campaigns and displaying messages at metro stations like 'do not make reels and cause discomfort', unsavoury incidents continue to be reported.
DMRC has been appealing to commuters to inform them when they notice unruly or prohibited behaviour in the trains rather than make videos of the incidents.
"Commuters should inform the train operator if they spot anything objectionable or anyone creating a nuisance inside a train," a metro official said.
"Security or DMRC staff at the next arriving station will immediately take necessary action. Passengers can also seek help at the helpline number 155370."
In an effort to disseminate information in a creative manner, DMRC has used terms familiar to reel makers to educate them. Signboards saying 'STOP making reels', 'don't PLAY loud music in metro premises' and 'PAUSE - let passengers deboard first' are prominently displayed on platforms or at concourse levels across the network.

Police identified the other individuals as Nikhil Poptani (35), a cigarette trader from Hadapsar, Sameer Sayyed (41), a hardware businessman from NIBM Road, Shripad Yadav (27), a builder from Akurdi, Sachin Bhombe (42) of Wagholi, Isha Singh (22) of Aundh and Prachi Sharma (23) of Mhalunge," deputy commissioner of police (crime) Nikhil Pingale said. Delhi HC rejects bail of suspected Isis member in arms case
NEW DELHI: Delhi HC has rejected the bail plea of a suspected Isis member accused of procuring arms and ammunition for the proscribed outfit and using social media to promote its objectives. In a recent order, a bench of justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar upheld a trial court detention order, stating it was not mechanical in nature. HC said accused Mohd Rizwan Ashraf could not be released due to the ongoing investigation, as releasing him and others at a crucial stage would impede the probe. "This court is satisfied that the trial court applied its mind to the grounds set forth. The trial court categorically observed the investigation progressed substantially during remand extensions granted by it and the investigation was not stagnant. Order of the trial court extended custody not as a matter of routine but based on credible material outlining the investigative steps requiring completion," the bench observed. Ashraf was arrested by NIA in 2023 under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) provisions. He challenged various orders of the trial court extending his custody, including on Feb 24, 2024, when his judicial custody was extended by 25 days. On the same day, the trial court dismissed his plea for default bail. Ashraf's counsel submitted the orders were passed by the trial court in a mechanical and perfunctory manner and did not indicate any individual assessment of his role. He argued NIA failed to demonstrate why Ashraf's continued detention was necessary for probe. However, HC said three accused persons, including Ashraf, were active ISIS and they were propagating the ideology of the organisation and trying to recruit youth for its objectives. "At the time when the remand orders were being considered, material was being unearthed to establish that the accused, including the appellant (Ashraf), were conducting recce at various Indian cities including, but not limited to, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Surat for terrorist activities," it pointed out, adding conspiracy was also being hatched in other countries. "A money trail from Maldives was also being investigated. Material on record indicates that investigation was also underway to find out about other associates of the accused," HC noted.

Meth worth Rs 49L seized from two near Bhakti Circle in A'bad
Ahmedabad: The city's Special Operations Group (SOG) on Saturday seized 489.410 grams of suspected methamphetamine worth Rs 49 lakh and arrested two persons near Bhakti Circle on the Ring Road-Nikol stretch. The FIR was lodged by the SOG team after the operation was conducted based on a tip-off. According to the FIR, the SOG received intelligence around 4.40pm that two individuals were seen near the HP petrol pump, close to Bhakti Circle, possibly carrying methamphetamine drugs. Both were described by their attire, one in a reddish-checked shirt and jeans, and the other in a green-checked shirt and jeans. An SOG team proceeded towards the spot in an autorickshaw. Around 5.40pm, the two suspects were located a short distance from Avkar Homes. One of them tried to flee but was caught near the society's gate. After informing seniors and calling for additional support, the suspects were detained, and an official search was initiated in the presence of two independent witnesses. The suspects were taken to the SOG office, where a forensic team was called. In their presence, the seized substance was tested, photographed and weighed. "The drug seized weighed exactly 489.410 grams, and it tested positive as methamphetamine," the FIR notes. The total market value of the meth and other seized items — including phones and cash — has been pegged at Rs 49.05 lakh. No other objectionable items were found in the rickshaw or nearby vehicle, the FIR states. The FIR further states that during questioning, the accused revealed they procured the contraband from two individuals, both of whom are currently absconding. The accused, both originally from Modasa in Aravalli district, have been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is ongoing by the SOG.
