Mickey Moniak homers as Rockies double up Cardinals
July 23 - Mickey Moniak homered and singled, Ryan McMahon also went deep, and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4 in Denver on Tuesday night. Bradley Blalock (1-2) pitched into the sixth inning, Brenton Doyle had three hits and Adael Amador doubled twice for Colorado. The Rockies have won three of four out of the All-Star break. Willson Contreras, Jordan Walker, Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson had two hits each for St. Louis, which has lost 12 of its last 17. Colorado jumped on Cardinals starter Erick Fedde early. Moniak hit a solo homer in the first inning, his 15th of the season, and the Rockies added two more in the second. McMahon walked, Doyle singled and Amador hit a two-out double to right field to drive in both runners and make it 3-0. Colorado extended the lead in the third when Moniak and Jordan Beck singled and McMahon hit his 16th home run to make it 6-0. Fedde (3-10) allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings. St. Louis got a couple back in the fourth. Burleson singled, went to third on a double by Contreras and scored on Nolan Arenado's groundout. Contreras came home on Masyn Winn's single off the glove of first baseman Michael Toglia. The Rockies tacked on another run in the fifth on Ezequiel Tovar's double and Doyle's RBI single. The Cardinals threatened in the sixth when they had runners at the corners with no outs but Blalock retired Arenado and reliever Jake Bird came on to get the next two batters to strand the runners. Blalock (1-2) allowed two runs on eight hits, walked one and didn't have a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. St. Louis got a run in the seventh on Donovan's run-scoring double but didn't cash in for any more runs despite having two on with one out, but did score in the eighth when Walker and Yohel Pozo hit two-out doubles. Moniak walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to give Colorado an insurance run. --Field Level Media

Giants end 6-game losing streak with shutout of Braves
July 23 - Casey Schmitt and Wilmer Flores homered as the visiting San Francisco Giants ended their six-game losing streak with a 9-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Schmitt hit a solo homer, his fifth, as part of a four-run rally in the second inning. Flores delivered a three-run shot, his 12th of the year and first since June 7, in the seventh to put the game away and help the Giants even the three-game series. The Giants are 4-1 against the Braves this season. The victory was the 1,650th for San Francisco manager Bob Melvin, which moves him into a tie with Mike Scioscia for 20th in major league history. Giants starter Landen Roupp (7-6) threw five scoreless innings and allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six. Over his past six starts, Roupp is 3-1 with a 1.15 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings. It was his second victory over the Braves this season. San Francisco relievers Sean Hjelle and Joey Lucchesi each pitched a frame and Carson Seymour threw the final two innings, striking out three in the ninth to complete the Giants' fifth shutout of the year. Atlanta's Davis Daniel (0-1) pitched five innings and permitted five runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts. It was his second start and third appearance for the Braves. The Giants scored four times in the second to take command. Willy Adames walked -- one of his three for the game -- and scored on Matt Chapman's triple that the yellow line on the center field fence and bounced away from Michael Harris II. Melvin contended the ball left the park, but a video review confirmed the call on the field. It didn't really matter. Flores followed with a sacrifice fly and Schmitt hit a 416-foot solo homer into the second deck of the left field seats. The Giants then loaded the bases and Heliot Ramos hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Adames added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning, giving him 17 RBIs in July. In the seventh, Rafael Devers hit an RBI single and Flores belted his three-run shot. Devers played the full game at first base, his first appearance at the position in 1,083 regular-season games. His refusal to play first base for the Boston Red Sox earlier this year helped prompt his trade to the Giants. --Field Level Media
