Maoist couple surrenders before Andhra Pradesh DGP
Amaravati, Jul 26 (PTI) A Maoist couple – J Nagaraju and M Jyothiswari – surrendered before Andhra Pradesh DGP Harish Kumar Gupta on Saturday, officials said.
Police said Nagaraju, who is also known as Kamlesh, had been a Maoist for about 34 years and last worked as the in-charge of East Bastar Division committee and was also a part of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal committee, said an official press release.
'J Nagaraju, a senior Maoist who had worked in the Maoist party for about 34 years and his wife M Jyothiswari surrendered," said Gupta, addressing a press conference.
According to the DGP, the couple was disenchanted with the failures of the Maoist Party and its central committee's policies.
Gupta noted that Nagaraju and Jyothiswari had played a key role as Maoists in Chhattisgarh and added that Nagaraju carried a bounty of Rs 20 lakh and Jyothiswari Rs 5 lakh.
As instant relief for the surrendered couple, the DGP said a cheque of Rs 20,000 each has been handed over to them. Further, Gupta said, Alluri Sitaramaraju district police confiscated a weapons dump based on specific intelligence. PTI STH ADB

Negi accuses BJP of insulting national flag
Shimla, Jul 27(UNI) Himachal Pradesh Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi has strongly criticized BJP leaders and a few local businessmen in Thunag for allegedly insulting the national flag during a protest against the government's decision to shift the Horticulture College from Thunag to a safer location. Negi defended the Congress government's move to relocate the college, citing the recent flash floods and the risk to students' lives. "It is wrong to run a college in a disaster-prone area just to protect business interests of a few people," he said, adding that students living in rented homes in Thunag had themselves requested relocation due to repeated disasters in 2023 and 2024. The Minister said that BJP workers and a handful of shopkeepers tried to block the state government's decision and even created a scene during his visit to the area. 'They surrounded my vehicle, threw black cloths and a slipper-like object at it, and disrespected the tricolour mounted on the car,' he alleged. 'This act amounts to treason,' he added. Negi also questioned the BJP's silence over the incomplete infrastructure of the college. "Out of the total Rs 270 crore sanctioned, only Rs 10 crore was spent when BJP was in power," he claimed. He said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is personally monitoring the situation and relief work is going on without any resistance from the common people. 'Only some BJP leaders and businessmen are trying to politicize the issue,' Negi said. Negi further targeted BJP leader Dr. Rajeev Bindal, saying, 'The real shameful act is the insult of the national flag, not the relocation of the college meant to save lives.' Theft at BJP MLA's house
A cook allegedly made off with Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and valuables from the residence of BJP MLA from Shravasti, Ram Pheren Pandey, in the Hazratganj area on Saturday night. The MLA, who resides at the ministerial housing complex at 3 Tilak Marg in the Dalibagh area, accused servant Rinku Pankalta, a native of Shravasti, as the prime suspect. Rinku is currently on the run.

Extortion bid foiled, accused held
Lucknow: Kushinagar police on Sunday cracked an extortion case in which a jeweller received WhatsApp messages demanding Rs 5 crore under threat of death. The accused, Aryan Upadhyay, a resident of Sarpathahi Buzurg under the Nebua Naurangia police station, was arrested within hours of the complaint. The victim, Anshuman Banka, a well-known jeweller in Padrauna, lodged an FIR after receiving threatening WhatsApp messages. The sender, operating under the alias 'Munna Tabahi,' claimed to be from 'AK-47 Gang', wrote in one of the messages: "Give Rs 5 crore or I'll shoot you in broad daylight at a public crossing. You have 24 hours." Kushinagar SP Santosh Kumar Mishra immediately formed a multi-unit task force comprising personnel from the Padrauna police, Nebua Naurangia police, SWAT team, cyber cell, and surveillance units. Through electronic surveillance and technical analysis, the police traced the number to Aryan Upadhyay, who was promptly arrested. The mobile phone used to send the threats was recovered from his possession. "During interrogation, Aryan confessed to sending the threats with the intention of intimidating the jeweller. He admitted that there is no such gang as the 'AK-47 Gang' and that the threats were made in a fit of anger to scare the trader. He further revealed that he had similarly threatened a journalist in Nebua Naurangia earlier this month. A separate case (FIR No. 283/2025 under BNS 351(2) and IT Act 67) has been registered in that incident," Mishra said.
