California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office made light of U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon announcing the state had violated Title IX by allowing trans athletes to compete in girls sports with a controversial social media post on Wednesday.
Just hours after McMahon's announcement of the violations and an ultimatum of 10 days for the state to amend its policies, Newsom's press office X account mocked McMahon with an old clip of her being body-slammed during a WWE skit.
The clip was of current Knox County Mayor Glenn Thomas Jacobs, also known as "Kane," hitting McMahon with move known as the "tombstone piledriver" during an episode of "Monday Night Raw" in the early 2000s.

McMahon, as the wife of WWE founder Vince McMahon, has been heavily involved in the wrestling entertainment product for decades. She even led the WWE organization as CEO.
However, Newsom's office making light of the Title IX violation announcement with a clip of McMahon's WWE past prompted severe backlash.
Many critics pointed out that the clips depicts a man physically overpowering a woman, which is often centered as one of the most common arguments against letting biological males compete in girls and women's sports.
"So a man easily destroying a woman is how you want to relay that boys belong in girls sports?" one X user wrote.
Another critical user wrote, "Thanks for proving our point. Men are stronger than women. I can't believe you actually posted this display of male violence."
Several prominent women's rights activists and groups made separate posts speaking out against Newsom's office over the joke.

McMahon said in an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday that California would be at risk of losing its federal funding for its K-12 schools if the requirements are not met.
A press release by the U.S. Department of Education states that California's high school sports league, the CIF and the California Department of Education (CDE) have 10 days to amend their policy or risk referral to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Newsom responded to the Education Department later Wednesday.
"It wouldn't be a day ending in 'Y' without the Trump Administration threatening to defund California. Now Secretary McMahon is confusing government with her WrestleMania days — dramatic, fake, and completely divorced from reality. This won't stick," Newsom spokesperson Izzy Gardon told Fox News Digital.
The CIF said it didn't comment on legal matters.
"The California Department of Education believes all students should have the opportunity to learn and play at school, and we have consistently applied existing law in support of students' rights to do so," Liz Sanders, director of communications at the California Department of Education, told Fox News Digital.
Newsom previously talked about transgender participation in girls sports back in March with prominent conservative Charlie Kirk.
"The young man who's about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn't happen," Kirk said. "You, as the governor, should step out and say no. Would you do something like that? Would you say no men in female sports?"

"I think it's an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it's deeply unfair," Newsom told Kirk. "I am not wrestling with the fairness issue. I totally agree with you."
Kirk pressed Newsom on whether he would condemn the athlete in question from Jurupa Valley High School after the athlete won another event at the time. Newsom did not directly address the win but said, "It's a fairness issue."
"So, that's easy to call out the unfairness of that," he said. "There's also a humility and a grace. … These poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression. And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well.
"So, both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think, you know, is inherent in you but not always expressed on the issue?"

Chelsea beat Benfica in comical Club World Cup game
Chelsea beat Benfica 4-1 after extra time in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup but despite the high stakes, the game was overshadowed by events off the field. It has been a familiar story in this competition. Fan attendances have been disappointingly low for FIFA. But they would have been hoping that knockout games, especially ones involving huge global teams such as Chelsea, may have changed the tune. Advertisement The Bank of America stadium holds 74,867 fans, but the official attendance was less than a third of that. And the major event of the game, that occurred in the 85th minute, was a stoppage due to weather conditions that lasted 106 minutes. Yes that's correct. The stoppage lasted longer than the game itself. Chelsea were minutes away from a 1-0 win at that point, and what happened when play resumed was unimaginable. Events on the field got off to a quick start, despite the 32 degree temperature. Chelsea controlled early possession, and had a brilliant chance to open the scoring in the 19th minute via the ever-dangerous Marc Cucurella, but he saw his curled effort headed off the line by Antonio Silva, who was brilliant throughout. Advertisement The Spaniard then came close again in the 38th minute. It's an interesting position for Enzo Maresca, on one hand he must be delighted with how threatening the full-back is, but on the other it must be slightly concerning that he genuinely seems one of the most likely players to score for Chelsea. He draws comparison to former Blues player Marcos Alonso, also a marauding Spanish full-back who was a constant threat for Chelsea over the years. The second period was largely stale, and after Chelsea failed to capitalise on their first half dominance and numerous chances, they struggled after the break. But the three minutes between the 61st-64th had a huge impact on the game, and possibly Chelsea's next…. Advertisement Caicedo was booked, meaning he will miss the quarter-final, and just moments later Reece James broke the deadlock via a very intelligent free-kick. 25-yards out, hugging the left touch-line, it seemed a nothing opportunity for a standard cross into the box, but James had other plans. He took it quickly and shot powerfully, catching Anatoliy Trubin completely unaware. The old adage goes that you are most vulnerable straight after scoring, and that proved true as moments later Vangelis Pavlidis went clean through and was almost one-on-one with Rob Sanchez, but for some great defending from Benoit Badiashile. Then the weather warning suspended play in the 85th minute. And we had to wait just under two hours for proceedings to resume…. Advertisement Despite many thinking it would just be an obligatory five minutes of football that had to be finished off, it became much more than that. Malo Gusto gave away a penalty for handball, which Angel Di Maria, who had been completely anonymous to that point, dispatched cooly. Extra-time began, and within two minutes Gianluca Prestianni, who only came on for Benica in the 70th minute, was sent off for a second yellow. By now this game felt farcical, and, frankly, never-ending. It felt as though players and fans alike just wanted to see a conclusion. And a conclusion came shortly, when in the second period of extra time, Caicedo shot across goal, the keeper spilled it, and Christopher Nkunku bundled in the rebound. Advertisement The Frenchman had a very tough last season, and the emotion on his face was clear to see. Even Maresca ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the team, which he has never done before. But the goals didn't stop there, as Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added one each to make the final score 4-1. Chelsea will now play Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Saturday, and as was evident from the celebrations after Nkunku's goal, they clearly care about winning this competition. Inter Milan & Argentina Starlet Plays Down Summer Loan Talk: ‘Inter & Chivu Believe In Me'
Inter Milan & Argentina Starlet Plays Down Summer Loan Talk: 'Inter & Chivu Believe In Me' Valentin Carboni isn't in any rush to go out on loan again, as he feels Inter Milan and Cristian Chivu 'believe' in him. The 20-year-old Argentine international spoke to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, in an interview in today's print edition. Advertisement Valentin Carboni is currently part of the Inter Milan squad in the United States for the Club World Cup. The Argentine memorably scored the stoppage time winner in a 2-1 group stage victory over Urawa Red Diamonds. In general, new Nerazzurri coach Cristian Chivu has not hesitated to trust Carboni. That is in keeping with the Romanian coach's remit to put his faith in youth. Last summer Carboni had went on loan to Marseille. However, a serious knee injury in the autumn utterly derailed plans for him in France. The season before, the Argentine had enjoyed a positive campaign out on loan with Monza. Valentin Carboni Plays Down Loan Talk: 'Inter & Chivu Believe In Me' MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA – JUNE 29: Valentin Carboni of Argentina looks on during the CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 Group A match between Argentina and Peru at Hard Rock Stadium on June 29, 2024 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Photo by) As far as the possibility of another loan this summer, Valentin Carboni said 'I don't know.' Advertisement 'It's too early to talk about that,' the 20-year-old made clear. 'Right now, we're at the Club World Cup. And then the preseason, to stay in the group.' 'Whatever the solution is I know that Inter believe in me and always have,' Carboni added. 'Like Chivu does.' Meanwhile, Carboni gave his thoughts on his best position. 'In theory I'm an attacking midfielder,' he said. 'An enganche, as we say in Argentina.' 'But it's hard to find teams that play with someone behind the striker these days,' he admitted. 'Which is why players like me often move into more of a box-to-box role.' 'Maybe that's the position I see myself in in the future. Perhaps with more of an attack-minded role.' Advertisement Furthermore, Carboni noted that it's a 'positive moment' to be a younger player at Inter. 'Maybe they're 'seeing' us more than before,' he commented. 'And now we have Chivu, who's used to working with the younger guys and launching their careers.' Carboni declared that 'we just have to push to the maximum and get our chances.' 'If we deserved them, they'll come,' the Argentine said. 'But we also have to remember that this is Inter.' 'With so many top players, it's never easy to break through.' 'Sometimes it's necessary to gain experience elsewhere and then return,' Carboni admitted.

How to watch Aces at Mercury: Western Conference clash puts A'ja Wilson vs. sizzling Phoenix
Two of the WNBA's best bigs go at it on Sunday, with Satou Sabally and the white-hot Phoenix Mercury hosting A'ja Wilson and her Las Vegas Aces. Phoenix has been one of the surprise competitors of this nascent 2025 season, while Vegas looks uncharacteristically labored so far. How to watch Las Vegas Aces at Phoenix Mercury Venue: PHX Arena — Phoenix Advertisement Time: 6 p.m. ET, Sunday TV: NBA TV (national), Arizona's Family 3TV and Vegas 34 (regional) Streaming: Fubo (try for free) Watching in person? Get tickets on StubHub. It's not all bad for the Aces. Wilson recently surpassed 5,000 total points, and did so in fewer games than anyone in league history. Elsewhere, Jackie Young has bumped up to the best scoring average in her seven pro seasons, and Chelsea Gray is still efficient behind the arc on career-high volume (37.3 percent, 5.0 attempts per contest). Becky Hammon's group has the fewest fouls in the W and enjoys a positive free-throw differential. And … that's about it. Advertisement Across the past six seasons, the dynastic Aces have two championships, a third Finals appearance and three semifinal finishes. They've been a surefire staple for this current era of women's hoops. Yet these Aces arrive in the desert with a paltry 7-8 record, ranking ninth out of 13 teams in points for and points against. They're also ninth in net rating, spoiling six consecutive years of top-four marks there. Kiah Stokes has been a non-factor as the fifth starter, and the entire bench rotation is shooting below 40 percent. Six-time All-Star and 2023 scoring champ Jewell Loyd was supposed to slide right in as Kelsey Plum's replacement. She's maintained her assist-to-turnover ratio and is still on point from long distance (41.7 percent in her first 15 Vegas games), but her 2-point struggles are almost hard to process (35.3 percent, worst among all regular 2025 starters). Phoenix, meanwhile, has been an all-out challenge for the rest of the sport. The Mercury have won six in a row behind brisk pacing, shoot-at-will tempo and disciplined defense. They've wholly dominated turnover differentials, leading all teams in takeaways, and four of their players crack the top 20 in defensive rating. The offense funnels into Sabally. The German-American big is up to a career-high 19.6 points per game while playing out-of-her-mind defense down low. The engine runs through Alyssa Thomas, the league's leading initiator at 9.5 assists per game. It's not often that an established 12-year veteran with multiple All-WNBA nods improves her output, but Thomas has career-best numbers in assists and field goal percentage. Advertisement Sabally had only played with Dallas before joining Phoenix in the offseason. Thomas did 11 years in Connecticut before her free agency move. Much props are in order for second-year head coach Nate Tibbetts and GM Nick U'Ren. With Kahleah Copper reintegrated from her knee injury, the Mercury are harboring real title aspirations in their first staging without Diana Taurasi or Brittney Griner. Best player to wear both jerseys: Danielle Robinson. She was a three-time All-Star with the San Antonio Silver Stars, the previous iteration of the Aces franchise, before a respectable 2017 season with Phoenix. Robinson then got to don the Vegas threads in 2020, when she was a crucial bench guard for the team's Finals run. Updated WNBA odds The Athletic This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
