UAE Leads Globally in Metrology as Pillar of Innovation, Economic Competitiveness

Hi Dubai16-06-2025
The UAE is advancing its vision of a knowledge-driven economy by elevating metrology—the science of measurement—as a cornerstone for innovation, quality, and competitiveness.
Central to this effort is the Emirates Metrology Institute (EMI), which is building a robust national system that enhances accuracy, fairness, and trust across critical sectors.
Founded in 2011, EMI leads the country's ambition to become a regional and global hub for precision measurement sciences. Accurate measurement underpins social and economic justice, ensuring fair trade, protecting consumer rights, and promoting healthy competition. By strengthening the national metrology infrastructure, the institute supports sustainable development, attracts investment, and aligns the UAE with global standards.
EMI is currently developing specialized laboratories to serve key industries. These include facilities focused on mass, volume, and flow measurements for commerce and industry; electrical time and power for energy and telecommunications; length and angle for construction and engineering; temperature and humidity for environmental monitoring; and force, torque, and pressure for oil, gas, and construction sectors. A Chemical Metrology Laboratory is also in feasibility study stages, aiming to bolster healthcare, food safety, and environmental oversight.
Through strategic training programs and international partnerships, EMI has nurtured skilled Emirati professionals to lead this scientific infrastructure. The institute's work not only enhances measurement precision but also fosters innovation, reduces resource waste, and builds confidence in the UAE's quality infrastructure—key pillars for a competitive, innovation-driven economy.
As the UAE pushes forward, EMI's role remains critical in ensuring transparency, market stability, and compliance with international best practices, positioning the country at the forefront of the global metrology landscape.

Emiratisation gathers pace with more than 150,000 UAE nationals working in private sector

The number of Emiratis working in the private sector has surpassed 152,000, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation announced on Monday. It marks an increase from 100,000 in May 2024, with UAE citizens now working across 29,000 companies in the Emirates. The figures are from June 30, the deadline set for achieving Emiratisation targets for the first half of the year. Emirati citizens are currently employed across six main economic sectors, the ministry said. These are business services, financial intermediation, trade, repair services, construction and manufacturing. The UAE has embarked on a major push to encourage more domestic talent to join the private sector in recent years. The Nafis programme was introduced in September 2021 with a mission of ensuring 10 per cent of all jobs in the private sector are taken up by citizens by the end of 2026. Companies must increase their Emirati workforce by 1 per cent every six months as part of the nationwide scheme. Employers in the UAE with at least 50 members of staff were required to meet a 4 per cent target by the end of 2023. As a result, the Emirati employment rate will increase to 8 per cent by the end of 2025, and 10 per cent in 2026. Last month, private sector companies were urged to develop long-term strategies to attract and retain top domestic talent and guard against seeking to merely 'fulfil a quota' to hit strict Emiratisation targets.

Sharjah Ruler approves allocation of 690 land plots for citizens in Khor Fakkan

Sharjah's Ruler on Monday approved the allocation of 690 land plots for Emirati citizens, furthering efforts to support local development and housing. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, directed the Department of Planning and Survey to allocate the plots of land to citizens living in Khor Fakkan. The new directive includes 180 residential plots, 450 industrial plots, and 60 commercial plots in the Al Harai area. Work is already underway to level the land, with plans to distribute the plots to eligible beneficiaries within two months. As part of the development, a public park will also be constructed in the area to enhance community facilities. This announcement follows a similar initiative from November last year, when the Sharjah Ruler approved 160 plots for Khor Fakkan residents — 80 commercial plots along Harai Road and 80 industrial plots. Priority was given to citizens holding commercial and industrial licenses. Housing initiatives The announcement also comes on the heels of a broader housing support programme recently approved by the Ruler of Sharjah, endorsing Dh335 million in funding to assist critical housing cases across the emirate. A total of 431 families will benefit from this phase of the housing programme, all of whom fall under urgent housing needs. Earlier this year, on June 9, Sheikh Dr Sultan approved Dh100 million in compensation for owners of old homes in Al Madam who had previously been allocated new residences. He had previously approved a sum of Dh250,000 for each of the 200 owners whose old homes were replaced. Similarly, on January 21, Sheikh Dr Sultan approved the disbursement of Dh15 million to resolve construction delays affecting 70 government homes for Emirati citizens, following a temporary suspension of the project.

Drydocks World launches competition to name Middle East's mightiest crane

Drydocks World, Dubai's original shipyard and a DP World company, has launched an emirate-wide competition to name a major new addition to its world-class engineering portfolio—a 5,000-tonne floating crane. As the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, the crane represents the latest in a series of groundbreaking engineering innovations, underscoring the company's ongoing commitment to maritime excellence. Opened in Mina Rashid by the visionary ruler of Dubai, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1979, Drydocks World stood at the forefront of the UAE's rise as a global maritime and industrial hub. For over four decades, the shipyard has repaired some of the world's largest tankers and built cutting-edge floating infrastructure. Now, Drydocks World is inviting all residents—from engineers and students to poets and business pioneers—to help give this colossal machine a name that reflects its purpose and significance. The Floating Sheerleg Crane is being constructed by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) and will be delivered to Dubai in the summer of 2026. But the name must be finalised now, before it is permanently engraved onto the crane during fabrication, becoming part of its identity for decades to come. Designed to lift loads of up to 5,000 tonnes to a height of 120 metres above water, the floating crane is being hailed as a modern marvel of maritime engineering. Once operational, it will strengthen Drydocks World's ability to deliver mega maritime and energy projects. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said, 'This crane is more than machinery. It's a symbol of Dubai's ambition, resilience and engineering excellence. We are building something extraordinary. Now we invite the people of Dubai to help give it a name that reflects our shared values, heritage, and vision for the future.' Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, added, 'For over 40 years, Drydocks World has supported the UAE's rise as a global maritime hub. This new crane represents the next leap forward in scale, capability, and innovation.' With a maximum lift of 5,000 tonnes, the crane can lift 400 double-decker buses or twenty-five wide-body aircraft. When fully extended, it's 180-metre reach matches the rooftop height of the iconic Burj Al Arab, placing it among the most powerful and visually impressive cranes in the world. The competition is open to all residents. Participants are invited to suggest a name with cross-cultural appeal, symbolising strength, maritime heritage, innovation and the UAE's future. Entries must include proposed names in Arabic or English, along with a brief explanation of its meaning and inspiration. Names will be shortlisted by a panel of experts including Drydocks World leadership, Emirati cultural figures, and branding specialists. With the F1 Championship set for another thrilling ending at the Yas Marina Circuit in December, DP World is giving one lucky fan the chance to win a signed full-size 2025 McLaren Racing helmet. WAM
