Williams Racing Formula One driver Carlos Sainz has revealed startling comments made by McLaren driver Lando Norris about the 2025 MCL39 F1 car. The comments arrive days after Norris crashed into his teammate, Oscar Piastri, at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Sainz said ahead of the upcoming race weekend in Austria that Norris is "lacking a bit of the feeling" with the car compared to last year's MCL38, which helped Norris challenge Max Verstappen for the 2024 championship battle.
While Verstappen managed to secure his fourth title over Norris due to his racing prowess, the impressive battle between the two drivers placed Norris as a strong championship rival for this year.

Piastri leads the 2025 championship battle with 198 points, 22 more than Norris in second with 176 points.
While the points gap doesn't guarantee a championship victory for Piastri, it does represent a situation that has been challenging for Norris. McLaren overhauled its car over the winter break to smooth the rough edges and build on last year's strong foundation, a step that might have altered certain characteristics of the car, especially how it feels to drive.
Sainz highlighted Norris's ability to win a championship but revealed the problem he was facing with the 2025 title contender. The Spaniard said:
"It has not been easy for Lando," he told F1. "When I talk to him, he clearly is lacking a bit of the feeling he had with the car, compared to previous years. It's a bit unfortunate that that happens exactly a year after he's fighting for the world championship.
"It's, I think the fate, and somehow the way that F1 can go. We've seen the careers of many drivers being compromised by having a year where the car just doesn't seem to go exactly where you like. You can name Daniel [Ricciardo], for example, when he changed to McLaren.
"If that happens exactly the year that there is a championship car, it's unfortunate, and that is why F1 is such a complex sport, because it doesn't depend purely on you and your talent but also on a lot of things coming together at the same time and at the right time.
"My feeling is that Lando, as a driver, has the capacity to turn things around with his talent, with his speed. There are still plenty of races where anything can happen, and it will all come down to whether he can put those laps together in quali at the right time."
As F1 teams are expected to switch their focus to the 2026 car soon, it remains to be seen if McLaren addresses this concern with the MCL39.

Lando Norris Secures Stunning Pole Position For McLaren at the Red Bull Ring

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. McLaren's Lando Norris secured the pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix by a significant margin over rival cars. Setting a blisteringly fast lap time of 1:03.971, Norris proved he was untouchable on the Red Bull Ring. Charles Leclerc, who secured second place on the grid, set a time of 1:04.492. Norris got one step closer to winning the Austrian GP, given the superior pace of his MCL39 F1 car, which will help create a significant gap if he starts the race perfectly tomorrow. The Briton revealed after the qualifying session that he felt good about his Q3 run and praised the positive weekend so far. While Norris' qualifying performances have often set him back, he emphasized that today's run in Spielberg was something he will 'savor' for a long time. He told the media: Lando Norris of Great Britain and McLaren looks on prior to practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Austria at Red Bull Ring on June 27, 2025 in Spielberg, Austria. Lando Norris of Great Britain and McLaren looks on prior to practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Austria at Red Bull Ring on June 27, 2025 in Spielberg, Austria."It was a good lap, that's for sure. My Q3 run one was good, but I knew there were a few places where, if I just got it right, I could still get quite a bit more time, and I did exactly that. "I did what I planned to do, and when I plan to do something, and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well. So very happy. A good day, and it has been a good weekend for me so far, so hopefully we can keep it up. "It's a long season and I still savour this moment, especially as some of my tougher moments have been in qualy. So to put in the lap like today, to put in the performance like I had, was pleasing for myself. I'm excited. I want to prove to myself over and over again, and hopefully this is the beginning of it." Norris showcased top form on Friday during the second Free Practice session, where he set an impressive lap time of 1:04.580. McLaren's front suspension upgrade seems to be working well for Norris so far, who said the car was set up in the right direction. He said after FP2: "The car felt good from the off. Alex gave good feedback this morning after FP1 and he was on the pace straightaway, so it was good to see. "I think they moved the car in the right direction for FP2, and we just need to understand whether we want more of that [on Saturday], or a little bit less, or somewhere in the middle. So good steps in the right direction, but still a little bit more to come hopefully. "We've shown a bit more pace than some of the others. I certainly think they're going to catch up. Max is not far behind and they usually improve a lot into Saturday."

Mercedes Urged to Keep Russell Unless Verstappen Becomes Available

Sky Sports pundit Anthony Davidson called for Mercedes to keep George Russell unless Red Bull driver Max Verstappen hits the driver market. Russell's contract expires at the end of the season, although Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has reassured the media that a new deal is coming. Paddock experts believe the delay in the contract renewal is tied to whether Verstappen hits the market. "I thought that Lewis Hamilton was gonna stay at Mercedes when there were rumors about him going to Ferrari, but so I was wrong there," Davidson said. "So I don't wanna assume that Russell's gonna stay, but he's obviously very much part of the family. "He's the original young driver that came up through that Young Driver Academy within Mercedes. "They nurtured his career through F3, F2, and then into Williams with the Mercedes power unit, obviously, and then now into Mercedes. And he's a race winner. He's really driving a strong season this year. "Unless Verstappen were to come on the market, you'd be a fool not to sign Russell." "Unless Verstappen were to come onto the market, you'd be a fool not to sign Russell" 🗣️ Will George Russell be at Mercedes next year? 📝 — Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) June 26, 2025 During the Austrian Grand Prix race weekend, several reports are linking Mercedes to Verstappen as Red Bull struggles to perform this season. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has hinted at potential clauses in the Dutch driver's contract that could allow him to leave the team. The RB-21 is lacking pace and comfort, proving to be a real handful for the drivers to handle. Verstappen is delivering consistently title-winning performances, but the car's struggles have limited him to P3, 43 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri. With a new set of regulations coming in 2026, Verstappen is rumored to be considering a move away from Red Bull if the team struggles, leaving Mercedes as the team best positioned to sign the four-time World Champion. Mercedes invested several resources into their other driver, Kimi Antonelli, giving him a ton of testing and preparation before he ever drove in an F1 race. Since the team devoted so much to the Italian prodigy, it is hard to see the team moving on from him, given the promise he has shown. That leaves Russell potentially on the chopping block if Verstappen expresses his desire to leave. What can Amari Williams bring to the Boston Celtics?

On Thursday, June 26, the Boston Celtics selected English big man Amari Williams with the 48th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Williams is a five-year collegiate product, having spent four seasons with Drexel before moving to Kentucky for the 2024-25 campaign. Williams' best skill is his playmaking ability, especially on the perimeter or around the elbows. In a post-draft news conference, Celtics Vice President of Basketball Operations, Mike Zarren, detailed what led the Celtics to acquire the big man in the draft process. Zarren noted his rebounding and playmaking as key aspects of his skill set that attracted Boston to the Wildcats product. 'He's been one of the best passing big men in college for a long time,' Zarren said. 'He's an elite rebounder, he's a great guy, he had a wonderful career at Drexel, and then stepped it up another level at Kentucky. When you meet him, you'll see he's got just an enormous, enormous wingspan. And as you'll see on the court, if you haven't seen already, he's got incredible vision. And those things are just key abilities in the modern we play through big guys at the the guys we have had on our roster, and Amari should fit into that pretty well.' As a late second-round pick, Williams will likely spend a significant amount of time with the Maine Celtics in the G League. However, Boston has proven that it's open to giving two-way talent an opportunity to impress if they earn their minutes the hard way. Therefore, Williams should feel motivated to improve his game, and showcase his undoubted offensive skill next season. Nevertheless, there are some concerns surrounding Williams' defense. He has heavy feet and limited hip mobility, which could make him a target for opposing guards and forwards, regardless of whether he's playing drop defense, up-to-touch or switching as part of a switch-everything system. Still, rookies aren't supposed to be the finished product, so hopes will likely remain high over Williams' potential. Watch the "Taylor Talks Celtics" podcast on: YouTube: Website:
