Coronation Street legend Maureen Lipman reveals difficulties she has on set
The legendary actress, 78, has appeared as harridan Evelyn Plummer in the long-running serial drama since 2018, but since January has only appeared in a recurring capacity.
Her exit story saw her depart for a university law course, prompted by best pal Roy Cropper (David Neilson).
Maureen revealed that the reason behind her contract change was in order to 'have a bit of a life.'
She last appeared on screen in March after learning that daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) had been cast out by the locals after being caught out for drugging and stealing from Ken Barlow (William Roache).
Now, speaking on the 20 Questions podcast, Maureen has addressed the fast-paced environment working on Corrie, plus her distaste at the show's direction and scripts.
'One of the problems of being in a soap, for example, is because you're doing eight or 10 scenes a day, you read it, you move it, and then you film it,' she said.
'Boom, boom, thank you, and have another crack at it if something has gone wrong, but on the whole that's it. It's almost like radio, but there's cameras there.'
She continued: 'You can't do anything. People are just talking heads. They're standing there going, 'Don't you talk to me like that…' if it's EastEnders. Or, 'I'll have a word with you…' if it's Coronation Street.'
'Nobody is picking their nose or scrubbing the sink down while they're talking, or making three Martinis. It's all just heads talking.
'That's not what life is like. You're in a bedroom somewhere and you're talking to me, you're listening, you're making notes … I'm picking up my phone…
'It's very complicated a human life, you never just do one thing.'
She also noted that on her first day on set, show icon Barbara Knox told her that there's 'no time to do anything'. Maureen went on to comment about receiving very little direction in scenes.
'As far as directors are concerned it's a curious egg. I would love to work with somebody who knows more than I do about what you do on stage,' she added.

'That happens, but not always. Particularly in television, certainly on something like Corrie, you hardly get any direction at all.'
Speaking about her late husband Jack Rosenthal, who penned 130 scripts between 1961 and 1969, she continued: 'You can only be as good as your writer.' More Trending
'So often you are making things work on television particularly. Slightly altering the words.
'Think about Coronation Street, which I love doing and I'm very fond of it, and I love the fact I can pop in and out.
'But every episode is a different writer so you basically never get, what you used to get when Jack wrote it, you would write a block of six, so the same voice, the same rhythms and you didn't have to worry about whether the words suited your character, it was there, it was a single voice.

'A lot of the time now, in a series, you've got a different writer each one. You're sort of having to fit it into your mouth like a big fur glove and make it in character. That can make you a bit unpopular if you do it too much.'

Emmerdale's Adam Thomas in 'advanced talks' for I'm A Celebrity All Stars return
I'm A Celebrity spin-off All Stars is rumoured to be coming back and the latest speculation is that Emmerdale's Adam Thomas is in 'advanced talks' to appear on the ITV show A former soap star is reportedly in discussions to appear on the next series of I'm A Celebrity spin-off All Stars. Adam Thomas is said to be in "advanced talks" with ITV about signing up for it after reaching the final of the main series. Adam, 36, known for his roles on shows like Waterloo Road and Emmerdale, was a campmate in the jungle in Australia in 2016. He placed third in the final, behind runner-up Joel Dommett and winner Scarlett Moffatt, that year. Three years later, Adam co-hosted I'm a Celebrity: Extra Camp. He fronted the companion show with Emily Atack for one series in 2019 and his former campmate Joel also featured. It's now rumoured that Adam could take part in spin-off All Stars, which was filmed in South Africa for its debut series in 2022. A second series is reportedly due to be filmed in the country this autumn ahead of airing next year. A source told the Sun: "This will be a glorious return for Adam as he established himself as a true fan favourite through his series in camp and then on the spin-off show." They added that he's remained on TV since then though. They said: "He's stayed in the limelight, too, with Waterloo Road and then on ITV alongside brother Ryan with challenge show 99 To Beat. It's the perfect time for him to head back into the jungle and affirm his position as Mr Bushtucker Trial." Alongside his career on TV, Adam has also made headlines in recent years after being diagnosed with arthritis. The actor has raised awareness of the condition, having spoken about his experience, including in posts on social media. Former Strictly Come Dancing star Adam initially shared that he had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. He's since said that he has psoriatic arthritis - described by the NHS as a long-term condition that causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness. The NHS states that there's currently no cure for arthritis, but that treatments that can help slow it down. In an update posted on Instagram just last week, Adam spoke about taking medication but expressed hope that "this disease can be cured naturally". He told his followers that he would like to not have to take medication one day. Alongside a photo of himself injecting his thigh with medication, he wrote: "I lost hope ... I never thought I'd get my old life back ... I was wrong. To anyone struggling with arthritis and is lost and can't seem to find hope ... stay strong! It's a long and painful road but I promise you ... you will!" He went on to say that his medication has "changed" his life and promoted biologic injections, which he's said to take once every two weeks. Adam said: "No side effects no brain fog no throwing up, nothing! Nothing but pain free!" Adam continued: "I know this isn't going to heal the disease but it's given me a life I never thought I'd have again! Still putting in the work and focusing on diet and recovery as I'd like to think this disease can be cured naturally and one day I'd like to not have to take any meds but until then …" He concluded by telling fans that he wanted to "bring hope" to others with arthritis and to raise awareness. He said: "I feel like it's not talked about enough." He urged in his post: "Don't lose hope don't lose yourself to this disease." I'm a Celebrity... South Africa, often referred to as All Stars, featured a host of former campmates when it launched in 2022. Myleene Klass won the debut series of the spin-off after having been runner-up on I'm A Celebrity back in 2006. Adam is the latest former campmate rumoured for a potential return. Earlier this week, it was reported that comedian Seann Walsh, 39, has been in talks to appear on the spin-off after placing fifth on I'm A Celebrity in 2022. Harry Redkna pp and Gemma Collins had already been named as potential campmates. Former football manager Harry won I'm A Celebrity in 2018, whilst reality TV star Gemma quit after a few days when she did the show in 2014.

Coronation Street star bows out in sad scenes as fans call for U-turn
Coronation Street character Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hefarty) left the programme during Wedneday night's episode of the ITV soap in emotional scenes that played out behind bars Lou Michaelis bowed out of Coronation Street on Wednesday as she tearfully said goodbye to her children from behind bars - amid calls from fans to bring her back. The character, played by Farrel Hegarty, has only been on the ITV soap for a matter of months but has had an explosive time of it, with many viewers not wanting her to go. She arrived alongside her husband Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton), who made an enemy of various Weatherfield residents, and in May, he was jailed for the murder of PC Craig Tinker ( Colson Smith). Prior to that, a f lashback episode confirmed that after Mick had gone to prison for a crime Kit Green committed, and had become an enemy of the policeman in the process. But things were made worse when Mick discovered that Kit and Lou had conceived a baby when he was behind bars, meaning that teenager Brody (Ryan Mulvey) was not his son as he had initially thought. Shortly after the couple's debut, viewers were introduced to their daughters Joanie (Savanna Pennigton) and Shanice (Molly Kilduff), and things reached a climax when Mick broke out of prison in an attempt to take back his eldest. A rooftop tussle with Kit ended in a near-fatal stabbing for the police officer whilst Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) tried to shield Joanie from danger before Mick went back to jail. What's more, another flashback episode had revealed that Lou had put Gary Windass (Mikey North) in a coma when she hit him over the head amid a failed blackmail attempt, and she too was put behind bars. Mick's final scenes aired last week, and on Wednesday's edition of soap, Lou had accepted the fact that she was also going to be inside for a long time after Sally refused to loan her the money she would need for top lawyers. She told the Underworld machinist: "I've come to terms with the fact that I'm gonna do a decent stretch and I don't want you bringing the kids to see me anymore. Not regularly, any road. I don't want them to get used to seeing me in here. In this place." Through tears, she insisted to Sally: "I just think it's best I say goodbye to them for now. For all our sakes." "It's gonna be all right though, in a long time. You will get through this,", Sally tried to reassure her as the pair of them shared a heartfelt parting themselves. Sally vowed to take care of the girls while Lou is behind bars, and the schoolchildren enjoyed one last hug with their mum before they said goodbye. Just after the emotional farewell, Brody also promised his mum that he would be there for his half-sisters. This is not the first time Sally has been responsible for two girls, as she and ex-husband Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) have Rosie (Helen Flanagan) and Sophie (Brooke Vincent) together. Whilst her own daughters are no longer residing in Weatherfield, some of the storylines included Sally trying to push Rosie into stage school in the years before she started up an affair with her teacher John Stape (Graeme Hawley), and learning to accept her youngest as a lesbian. Meanwhile, Sally's second husband Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) is also the father of former regular Faye Windass (Ellie Leach), and even though she was adopted by Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) as a child, he became a constant presence for her throughout her tumultuous teenage years, which saw her at the centre of a violet bullying storyline as well as a secret pregnancy. At the time of Lou's debut on Coronation Street, she and her on-screen husband were dubbed as the new versions of Les and Janice Battersby, but only a short while after playing the hairdresser, Farrel vaguely discussed the exit for the first time to The Mirror and other press. She teased what was ahead, while also confirming the fact that she did know from the start she would be leaving after a matter of months, with an exit always on the cards despite some reports. She explained of why she took on the short-term role, knowing she would only be there for a specific amount of time: "I just think she really appealed to me because she's the sort of person who's never had it easy. "She's built up a lot of coping mechanisms, where she's presenting a hard and feisty character with her walls up, and all she's ever known is these fiery relationships. And probably fiery relationships with a lot of people in her life, which is what makes a character like that so interesting. "Because she's a force and irrational. I read scripts and I go, 'Oh God! What's she doing now? What's she saying now?' Because it's not a way that I would behave, and because of that, it's so much fun to play. It's that desperation to protect that inner circle and because of that, she makes a mess of things. But a character like that is so fun to play, because there's never a dull moment."
