Calcutta HC orders interim stay on notification of OBC list in W.B.
A Division Bench of Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Tapabrata Chakraborty issued the interim stay till the next date of hearing on July 31. The order was passed by the Division Bench following a petition seeking intervention of the High Court.
The court also put a stay on the State government's decision to open a portal for submission of caste certificates for the purpose of addition of OBC communities in the new list.
The Calcutta High Court in May 2024 had cancelled the OBC reservation awarded to 77 categories, highlighting a complete lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. The State government has approached the Supreme Court and the matter is pending before it.
On June 10, the West Bengal government tabled a new OBC list in the State Assembly with minor changes compared to the previous list.
Question posed
During the proceedings in the court, the Division Bench asked why the new OBC list had been finalised by introducing amendments to the 2012 Act.
The High Court's order came on a day when the State government opened a portal for admission in colleges and universities based on the new OBC list. There seems to be no clarity on the fate of the admission process particularly for those availing admission under the OBC category.
Decision welcomed
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari in a social media post welcomed the order 'to stay the inclusion of 76 Muslim classes in the new OBC list prepared by the Mamata Banerjee government'.
The Bengal BJP leadership had accused the Trinamool Congress government of 'appeasement politics' for including Muslims in the OBC list. Mr. Adhikari said contrary to the claims of the State Advocate General that the Opposition has not opposed the OBC list tabled in Assembly, he had raised objections to the fresh OBC list tabled by the Chief Minister.

PUCL sends letter to CS on alleged communal boycott, no official action
Pune: A fact-finding committee of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has written a letter to the chief secretary regarding an alleged disturbing communal tension and illegal prohibition against the minority community in Paud, Pirangut and other villages in Mulshi taluka of Pune district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The letter talks about the problem of unemployment and migration arising out of these. The committee, comprising G D Parekh, a retired district judge, and the Association for Protection of Civil Liberties (APCR), of which former high court judge Abhay Thipsay is the state president, found that despite the situation prevailing for a long time, no due cognisance was taken by the administration or other authorities concerned. "We sent a letter on June 30 to the chief secretary and all other officials, including the collector, divisional commissioner, MP Supriya Sule and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, but there has been no response yet," said Milind Champanerkar, general secretary, PUCL, Pune. Signboards allegedly prohibiting Muslims from "outside" entering and praying in local mosques had come up in various villages in rural Pune after the Pahalgam attack. The authorities removed these boards in Paud and Pirangut after PUCL and APCR made their case. But many problems remained unaddressed, said Champanerkar. "Fear and ongoing threats with impunity prompt migration of minority communities. People who shifted two months ago are yet to return because of lack of protection. There is no effort from the administration to bring life to normal. Worse, this pattern is replicated in other villages," said Champanerkar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now TOI's Calls and messages to the chief secretary, Pune district collector, divisional commissioner, Pune Zilla Parishad CEO, Baramati MP Supriya Sule and the Pune rural SP remained unanswered. The PUCL letter stated that there was a call for a complete boycott of the minority community. According to it, residents of the area and outsiders have been threatening people not to allow any Muslims to work, stay as tenants in their houses or do business in places owned by them. Some Hindus have been allegedly threatened with dire consequences if they help the Muslims. The letter stated that four scrap shops and three bakeries of Muslims had been shut down. Muslims running salons and chicken shops were being allegedly asked to shut shops. The letter said Muslims had not been allowed to work for one-and-a-half months, triggering an acute problem of survival. Last month, the Social Democratic Party of India also wrote to the authorities raising similar concerns. Azar Tamboli, state president of the party, in a press conference last month had said some villages went to the extent of forming Muslim Community Control Councils.

Santosh Lad denies ministers' rift with CM
Ballari: Labour minister Santosh Lad dismissed speculations on Saturday regarding cabinet ministers' alleged dissatisfaction with chief minister 's leadership. During a press interaction on Saturday, Lad questioned the basis of these claims and urged the media to address substantial state issues. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Who has claimed that ministers are dissatisfied with the CM? Who informed the media about this discontent? Please refrain from raising such unfounded questions. Instead, let's focus on the challenges facing the state," he stated. Discussing development funds, Lad noted that the state administration should seek clarification from the Centre regarding the lack of financial support. "It is true that grants for MLA HR Gaviyappa were not received. But, you have to ask him directly for details. We recently presented a budget and allocated more funds than the previous BJP administration. We have invested more across various departments when compared to them," he remarked. Lad noted that small variations within a democratic system are normal and asked the media not to interpret it as a form of governmental instability. Regarding Aland MLA BR Patil's recent statements, he said, "CM and Deputy CM communicated with him. If people are questioning whether Siddaramaiah will serve his full term, they should also inquire if Prime Minister Modi will complete his term. Our govt is enjoying full majority, while Modi's is a coalition. " Concerning BJP leader CN Ravikumar's contentious statements, Lad said the choice to apologise rests with him. However, "Such comparisons are disrespectful. He previously insulted a Muslim officer by labelling her a Pakistani, and now he has disrespected a Hindu woman. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Is Shalini Rajanish not a Hindu? Why demean her? We inhabit a society where people should feel ashamed of such statements. Such comments do not contribute to development. Everyone should learn how to communicate appropriately in public," Lad said. When asked about Ballari district minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan's absence and insufficient attention to the district, Santosh Lad said, "I will discuss this with him."

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei makes first public appearance since Iran-Israel war started
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday (July 5, 2025) made his first public appearance since the 12-day war between Israel and Iran began, attending a mourning ceremony on the eve of Ashoura. The absence of Mr. Khamenei during the war had suggested heavy security for the Iranian leader, who has final say on all state matters. State TV in Iran showed Mr. Khamenei waving and nodding to the chanting crowd as he entered and sat. There was no immediate report on any public statement made. Iran has acknowledged the deaths of more than 900 people in the war, as well as thousands of injured. It also has confirmed serious damage to its nuclear facilities, and has denied access to the sites for inspectors with the U.N. nuclear watchdog. Mr. Khamenei hosted a remembrance of the 7th century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein, at a mosque next to his office and residence in the capital, Tehran. Iranian officials such as the Parliament speaker were present, and such events are always held under heavy security. Shiites represent over 10% of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, and they view Hussein as the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad. Hussein's death in battle at the hands of Sunnis at Karbala, south of Baghdad, created a rift in Islam and continues to play a key role in shaping Shiite identity. In predominantly Shiite Iran, red flags represented Hussein's blood and black funeral tents and clothes represented mourning. Processions of chest-beating and self-flagellating men demonstrated fervour. Some sprayed water over the mourners in the intense heat. Israel relentlessly attacked Iran beginning June 13, targeting its nuclear sites, defense systems, high-ranking military officials and atomic scientists. In retaliation, Iran fired more than 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted, but those that got through caused damage in many areas and killed 28 people.
