The Citizen07-07-2025
On July 7, Acting Executive Mayor Kenny Kunene, along with members of the MMC and various city entities, led Operation Kunakisa, a high impact service delivery programme, into Region B.
The programme started along Noble Road, Industria, where they found two warehouses, one cutting wooden material and another manufacturing blankets, both with illegal electricity connections.

They also apprehended 10 foreign nationals hiding in the buildings, as well three Chinese nationals, one female and two males, said to own the blanket manufacturing warehouse, as, at the time, none of them had any form of identification on them.
'We're targeting buildings that are non-compliant,' Kunene said sternly. 'We're also apprehending any foreigner that does not have papers.'
The following videos show the extent to which Kunene is willing to let this operation go, with Kunene entering the wood cutting warehouse fiercely, seeking the owner of the property, another where he questions the three foreign Chinese nationals, and another that shows the dramatic apprehension of one of the individuals found hiding in one the warehouses.
This operation is ongoing, with more buildings to be attended to in such a manner.

Five dead in R66 horror crash, including family of four A devastating head-on collision claimed the lives of five people, including two young children, on Sunday night along the R66 near the Dokodweni Bridge. The collision between a light motor vehicle and a bakkie resulted in an additional seven seriously injured patients. Among the deceased were a family of four – a mother, father, their three-year-old child and a two-month-old baby – and a fifth passenger who were travelling from Nongoma to Durban when their vehicle, a Hyundai i10, was involved in the accident. Three children travelling in the Hyundai i10 survived the crash with serious injuries. IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick confirmed that the occupants of the bakkie were all seriously injured, including two adults and two children. 'Advanced life support paramedics stabilised the critically injured before transporting them to nearby medical facilities for further treatment. Emergency services worked tirelessly to manage the scene,' said Meyrick. She extended thanks to the Umlalazi and Mandeni Fire Departments, additional ambulance services and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Gingindlovu for their coordinated efforts during the rescue operation. Cellphones stolen at Bok game: Gauteng duo to appear in Mpumalanga court

Cellphones stolen at Bok game: Gauteng duo to appear in Mpumalanga court An otherwise pleasant and well-organised rugby match left some supporters as the unfortunate victims of opportunistic theft. According to Lowvelder, Mpumalanga SAPS confirmed that two suspects were arrested at the stadium on Saturday and are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court today. 'We can confirm that the two suspects were found at the stadium in possession of seven cellphones, believed to be stolen,' said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. 'The suspects both hail from Gauteng, and their arrest will be a lesson to others who believe Mpumalanga is a playground for thieves and robbers,' he added. The suspects were charged with theft and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property. Following reports of theft at the fixture, Lowvelder asked readers on its Facebook page about their experience. Several said their cellphones were stolen during the match. Mdhluli said detectives have identified the lawful owners of four of the recovered phones. The remaining devices are yet to be claimed. Police investigations are ongoing. Woman to appear in Pietermaritzburg court after illegal alcohol bust

Woman to appear in Pietermaritzburg court after illegal alcohol bust A 28-year-old woman is set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court today after she was arrested in connection with the manufacturing and distribution of illicit alcohol without a valid licence. The Witness reports she was arrested during a crime intelligence-driven operation on Saturday. A large quantity of illicit alcohol with an estimated street value of R120 000 was recovered. The multi-disciplinary operation was executed after police received information regarding illegal alcohol manufacturing activities in the Dambuza area, under the Plessislaer policing precinct. Members of the Multi-Dimensional Organised Crime Pietermaritzburg, Taylor's Halt SAPS, Plessislaer SAPS and private security company Magma Security were part of the operation. uMgungundlovu District Commissioner Major General Mduduzi Shezi commended the collaborative effort of all role players involved in ensuring that illegal operations of this nature are detected and swiftly dealt with. 'The production of unregulated alcohol not only undermines the economy but also poses serious health risks to consumers. 'The SAPS remains committed to rooting out criminal activities and urges members of the public to continue reporting suspicious operations within their communities,' said Shezi.
