Steve Smith drops shock career announcement amid frustrating development for Aussies
Australia and South Africa shared the points as a result, throwing Group B wide open and handing a huge unexpected boost to England. All four of South Africa, Australia, Afghanistan and England all still with a chance to advance to the semi-finals, while India and New Zealand have already secured their spots in Group A (at the expense of Pakistan and Bangladesh).
South Africa currently sit on top of Group B after their 107-run thrashing of Afghanistan, followed by Australia - who beat England by five wickets last week. The Aussies face Afghanistan in their final group match on Friday night and are guaranteed to go through to the semis with a win.
But a loss would leave Smith's side vulnerable, with the England-South Africa clash potentially looming as decisive. The washed-out match between Australia and South Africa is undoubtedly a boost to England's hopes. The Poms still need to beat Afghanistan on Thursday and South Africa on Saturday, but doing so would secure their place in the last-four regardless of net run-rate.
Smith revealed on Tuesday night he was considering changing up his team if the match was going to be reduced to 20 overs each, bringing in T20 guns like Jake Fraser-McGurk. "When we were watching the rain fall, we were probably looking at a different team for a rain-reduced game," he said. "You've got to think on your feet with those things. We've got a good squad of 15 players, and you've got to utilise them as well as you can."
Meanwhile, Smith revealed earlier on Tuesday that he'll play in 'The Hundred' tournament for the first time in his career in August, joining the Welsh Fire. He said in a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board: "I'm delighted to be joining Welsh Fire later this summer.
"I was due to be involved with The Hundred at the beginning of the competition so it's great to finally be able to make it to Wales. I've watched The Hundred from afar and I can't wait to be involved. It looks a lot of fun and obviously the cricket is world class, with talent at every team. I'm looking forward to trying out a new format and hopefully playing my part for (head coach) Mike Hussey and the rest of the boys."

The Welsh Fire are partly owned by IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, who also owns the Washington Freedom in America's Major League Cricket. Smith led the Freedom to the MLC title last year alongside Aussie coach Ricky Ponting. The Freedom have a partnership with Cricket NSW, leading to Smith's involvement.
He won't play in MLC this year due to Australia's three-Test tour of the West Indies occurring at the same time. And his involvement in The Hundred will also create some potential headaches considering Australia are slated to play three ODIs and three T20s in South Africa around the same time, although those dates are yet to be confirmed.
The Hundred is set to take place in August, with England captain Ben Stokes opting not to play so he can focus on the Ashes in the Aussie summer. The 33-year-old tore his hamstring while playing for Andrew Flintoff's Northern Superchargers team last August.
He then missed three months after tearing the same hamstring during the third and final Test of England's series in New Zealand in December. He is currently sitting out England's Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan.

Excitement has been rising all afternoon as York cheers on the Lionesses in the European Championship final. Across the city, friends and families have gathered in their chosen place to watch the big match against world champions Spain. Many pubs across the city are showing the match on their big screens as is Spark on Piccadilly where tickets for today's showing sold out within minutes. More than an hour before kick-off, fans were taking their seats and getting into the mood. 'They have a real passion for the game and they've done themselves and the country proud,' said Liz Atkins of the Lionesses. Everyone agreed that women's football is worth watching and not just because the Lionesses have a habit of playing in big finals. 'It's more enjoyable', 'they actually play football, it's not just tactics' and 'no hooliganism' were just some of the reasons given for watching it. And the general opinion is that England will win. Predictions of the score varied with 2-0, 3-2, 3-1, but everyone agreed that they don't want it to go to penalties. Members of two women's football teams were among those watching the match at Spark – Gals FC who play on a Thursday evening and Honeyball FC, named after the 19th century pioneer of women's football, Nettie Honeyball. 'We weren't allowed to play football at school, but that was a long time ago,' said Liz Atkins of Honeyball FC. Members of Gals FC, which plays football socially, were at Spark in force, and said they play because of the community spirit, the camaraderie, and, of course, to keep fit. For some of those at Spark the final was the first match they had gone out to see. They had watched previous matches at home. But for the final they wanted the atmosphere of being together in a large group to join in the atmosphere and share the excitement, the ups and the downs. Jacob's double for Rams inflicts openg-day loss on LR
Atherton LR opened their NWCFL Premier Division account with a narrow 2-1 defeat to champion contenders, Ramsbottom United on Saturday. It was a poor start by the Yellows as they went down early, with Rams winger Matt Dudley making a darting run down the wing to lay off Jacob Holland-Wilkinson who snuck a low ball through bodies and beat Joe Bickerstaffe to put the Rams ahead after just three minutes. LR fought their way back and held out against a strong Ramsbottom push before getting their own respective chances - Tom Lawless and Cal Hunter worked well together to get balls into the box but there was some great defensive work and notable saves by Rammy keeper Brad Rose. Ramsbottom were able to double their lead with Holland-Wilkinson again in space at the edge of the box, and he met a bouncing ball with a well-taken volley which flew past Bickerstaffe to doubled the hosts' lead. Hunter nearly got a brilliant goal back with a free-kick just hitting the corner of the bar. Coming back from the break, LR held the momentum with Abiola Obasoto and Harvey Brookes working well down the flank and Kieran Alley and George Chadwick on the opposite side mirroring them Substitute Tom Romano was eventually able to grab LR's only goal - a brilliant run following a defensive error was slipped under Rose and gave the visitors some momentum into the final 20 minutes. However, the Rams were able to hold on for a nervy win and despite the loss, LR pushed one of the league favourites all the way and have a lot to be proud off. Manager Dave Jones showed his appreciation afterwards and said: 'I'm proud of them.. the lads were brilliant, the better side throughout the game and this is a difficult place to go. 'Ramsbottom are hard to play against, hard to beat and they wont lose many games here - they're good at what they do.' LR return to Crilly Park on Tuesday night against South Liverpool (7.45pm).
