IRELAND'S bogs may be ancient but new science is reshaping how we see them, and who controls them.
Peatlands cover over a million and a half hectares, the equivalent of 1/5 of the island's total land mass.
These peatlands are being mapped more extensively than ever before, in a valiant effort to help curb the effects of climate change.
But while scientists race to uncover the environmental value of bogs, cultural tensions around turf-cutting still smoulder in rural villages and towns.
Researchers at the University of Galway, using a new gamma radiation technique from the state-funded Tellus geophysical survey, have developed high-resolution maps distinguishing peat from mineral soils.
This includes identifying previously hidden "transition zones" under forests and grasslands.
The project, led by geophysicists Dave O'Leary and Eve Daly, has revealed that peat soils cover more of Ireland than previously understood—at least 22% of the land.
'Peatland soils contain comparable amounts of carbon to rainforests,' Daly told AFP. 'Improved mapping can support better land management decisions and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.'
Peatlands, formed over thousands of years from decaying plants in waterlogged areas, have historically been used as a cheap fuel source in Ireland.
In regions like the midlands, generations have harvested 'turf' for heating their homes.
But this tradition is increasingly at odds with Ireland's climate goals.
Drained or cultivated peatlands emit large amounts of carbon: over 20 million metric tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually, nearly matching emissions from the island's entire transport sector.
Ireland has pledged to cut emissions by over 50% by 2030 under pressure from the EU, which has threatened billions of euros in fines.
The European Commission has also taken Ireland to court for failing to protect and restore bogs designated as Special Areas of Conservation.
Despite a 2022 ban on the commercial sale of peat for burning, turf-cutting continues under 'turbary rights' for personal use.
Weak enforcement has allowed illegal commercial harvesting to continue.
In 2023 alone, 350,000 metric tonnes of peat was exported, mainly for horticulture.
The cultural divide is palpable. Turf-cutter John Smyth, who's harvested peat for over 50 years, sees the policies as attacks on rural life. 'They don't know what it's like to live in rural Ireland.'
State policy has decidedly turned toward restoration. Bord na Móna, once Ireland's semi-state peat harvesting company, has ceased extraction and begun restoring bogs.
So far, a quarter of a targeted 80,000 hectares have successfully been rewet to turn degraded land back into carbon sinks.
Wind farms and solar panels now dot former peat harvest sites.
Still, restoration is a slow process. 'It's going to take a long time,' said Mark McCorry, ecology manager at Bord na Móna, on their website.
Agroecology expert Triven Koganti supports global peatland restoration efforts. 'Cultivated peatlands are responsible for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions,' he noted.
Ireland faces a stark choice: to preserve a way of life rooted in turf or prioritise bogs as vital tools for curbing climate change.

A NEW €34m research hub focused on chronic disease management has been launched in Ireland's Northern and Western regions. University of Galway is leading the hub in partnership with Atlantic Technological University and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Accelerating Research to Commercialisation (ARC) Hub for HealthTech aims to fast-track healthcare research into real-world solutions. Funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the hub will focus on developing smart implants, advanced wearables, novel sensors, and AI-driven models to improve chronic disease detection, monitoring, and treatment. The project aligns with Ireland's National Smart Specialisation Strategy, promoting regional growth through targeted innovation. 'The ARC Hub for HealthTech will transform regional innovation and accelerate the delivery of healthcare solutions to those who need them most,' said Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD. In addition to research, the hub will support scientists and engineers in commercialising their work - offering training in entrepreneurship, regulatory requirements, and market access. 'This initiative unlocks significant long-term opportunities for the region's healthcare, research, and enterprise communities,' said Celine Fitzgerald, interim CEO of Research Ireland. The HealthTech hub is the third in Research Ireland's ARC programme, following earlier launches in therapeutics (Trinity College Dublin) and ICT (TU Dublin). Together, these hubs are creating a national framework to bridge academic research and commercial application.

Scientists have issued an urgent warning for those who may be enjoying bottled beers this summer. With the last few days seeing temperatures soar to highs of 29C in some areas, some people will be looking to enjoy a few libations in the sun — be it at a back garden barbecue or a park with your mates. However, a new study has found that you might want to rethink grabbing a bottle of suds, as French food safety agency ANSES found that drinks sold in glass bottles — be they water, beer or wine — contain more microplastics than those found in plastic bottles. Scientists have issued an urgent warning for those who may be enjoying bottled beers this summer. While microplastics are found in pretty much everything in this day and age, the presence of them in glass bottles baffled the scientists behind the study, until it was found that the paint on the outside of the bottles are what's causing the presence of the microplastics. 'We expected the opposite result,' scientist Iseline Chaib told AFP. 'We then noticed that in the glass, the particles emerging from the samples were the same shape, color and polymer composition—so therefore the same plastic—as the paint on the outside of the caps that seal the glass bottles.' The team evaluated the levels of microplastics in various popular drinks that are sold in France, and found an average of around 100 microplastic particles per litre in glass bottles of soft drinks, lemonade, iced tea and beers — around five to 50 times as much as microplastics that were detected in cans and plastic bottles. The study found that there were microplastics in glass bottles, with beer bottles being the worst offenders. Pic: ANSES Both flat and sparkling water were safest, with relatively low levels of microplastics in all cases (4.5 particles per litre in glass bottles, 1.6 particles per litre in plastic). Those who are sommeliers are also (kinda) safe, with wine bottles — even glass ones with caps — also having relatively low levels. Soft drinks have, unfortunately, around 30 particles per litre, while lemonade has around 40 particles per litre. Beers are the worst though, with 60 microplastic particles per litre. There are no long-term health implications for the presence of microplastics in cells, but there are growing concerns about the capacity of particles that could alter cellular functions, with evidence growing that plastics could play a key role in early-onset cancer genesis. Microplastics are becoming a bigger problem, with studies trying to find the health ramifications.
