Semi-Final Was Our Final, Says Disappointed Fandi Ahmad

Barnama27-04-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Sri Pahang FC head coach Fandi Ahmad said that the 2024/2025 Malaysia Cup semi-final clash against Sabah FC was in many ways, their true "final."
The former Pahang and Singapore striker added that his team celebrated reaching the final as they believed luck might not be on their side in the ultimate showdown.
Ironically, in the final the Elephants lost 1-2 to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here, last night.

'They (players) were committed to this (final) because we didn't do well in the league...this year we were supposed to fight for the top three but things happened along the way and thereafter we knew our fight was for the (Malaysia) Cup.
'Actually, the semifinal match against Sabah FC was our final, this one ia bonus. After that game everybody celebrated because we were in the final because things might not work out for us in the final,' he told the post-match press conference after the final here, last night.
Commenting on the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the match, Fandi expressed his disappointment.
"For me, the VAR is a disappointment because nobody knows what's happening, only the inside people, we can't say good or bad, I won't say anything but whether it's a fair call or not fair call I can't say. I think you all know but what can we say,' he said, declining to comment further on the officiating quality.
The high-intensity final saw both teams forced to play with 10 players after two red cards were shown by referee Razlan Joffri Ali, one to Sri Pahang's striker Sergio Aguero and the other to JDT's defender Park Jun Heong.
Sri Pahang, under the guidance of Fandi Ahmad, stunned JDT by taking the lead through a 14th-minute strike from winger T. Saravanan.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei fall to Danish pair in Macau Open semi-final, miss all-Malaysian final

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — Malaysia's top mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei crashed out of the Macau Open today, falling to Denmark's Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje in the semi-finals. According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the world No. 3 duo lost 21-15, 17-21, 11-21 in a 54-minute match after a strong start. Despite comfortably taking the first game, they were undone by unforced errors in the next two, allowing the world No. 4 Danes to take control. The win marked Christiansen-Boje's first victory over the Malaysians in three meetings, the report said. Their exit ends hopes for an all-Malaysian final, after national underdogs Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing — ranked world No. 127 — pulled off a shock win over a top Indonesian pair earlier to reach the World Tour Super 300 final. Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Malaysia's men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh continued his fine run by coming from behind to defeat India's Tharun Mannepalli 19-21, 21-16, 21-16 in an epic 81-minute battle — marking his second win over Tharun in three meetings. Justin will next face Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, who earlier stunned second seed Lakshya Sen of India with a commanding 21-16, 21-9 victory. Also through to the final are national men's doubles pair Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who cruised past compatriots Choong Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri 21-13, 21-15 in just 34 minutes. They will meet either Indonesia's Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani or Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen in tomorrow's final, acording to the report.

World No 127 pair Jimmy-Pei Jing defy odds to enter Macau Open final

Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing are in a World Tour final after having teamed up only in March. PETALING JAYA : New mixed doubles combination Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing pulled off another major upset in the Macau Open today by defeating sixth seeds Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah of Indonesia to advance to tomorrow's final. The Malaysians, who are ranked No 127 in the world, took 42 minutes to defeat the world No 16 Indonesians 21-18, 21-16. The victory marks the first time the pair have reached a World Tour final together, having only partnered in March after Pei Jing's split with her regular partner, Tan Kian Meng, who has retired. In the final, they will meet either compatriots Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei or Danish pair Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje, who will be playing in the other semi-final later today. Jimmy-Pei Jing's giant-killing feats include victories over second seeded Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China in the quarter-finals, and India's world No 18 pair Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto in the round of 16. Jimmy, 23, and Pei Jing, 33, became the second Malaysian finalists in Macau after men's singles player Justin Hoh defeated India's Tharun Mannepalli in the semi-finals earlier. The Macau Open is a BWF World Tour 300 event which offers a total prize money of US$370,000 (RM1.58 million), with the singles champions receiving US$27,750 (RM118,792) and the runners-up US$14,060 (RM60,188).
