Ipswich Town Women hope for record crowd on Portman Road return
Ipswich Town Women are relishing the "massive opportunity" of playing at Portman Road for a second time on Sunday, and they hope to set a new attendance record.Last year, 10,173 fans attended their league fixture with Chatham Town, a match they won 5-0."We hope as many come as possible," said goalkeeper Natalia Negri. "It is a big boost for us and the women's game in general."Town Women, who are chasing promotion from the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division, take on Plymouth Argyle at 14:00 GMT.
The occasion will be extra special for midfielder Kyra Robertson. The 22-year-old told BBC Look East that her family were all big Town supporters."They probably would not expect to see their younger sister playing on the pitch that they watch the men's team play on every week," she said."The club are fully behind us. It is so nice to have their support and I will really relish the opportunity to play here."Robertson said last season's fixture was the first time she had played at Portman Road."It was a great day. This town really supports the club as a whole," she said."It's not just the men's team or the glamorous fixtures that they play [in the Premier League] every week."Just before kick-off, when [Ipswich Town CEO] Mark Ashton broke the news in the changing room that we had hit 10,000, we couldn't believe it."Walking out, we could hear the crowd. It was amazing and to top it off with the 5-0 win, we were so happy."
Town Women go into Sunday's match trailing league leaders Hashtag United by three points with five games to play after losing 1-0 to their Essex rivals three weeks ago.Asked if they needed to win all their remaining fixtures, goalkeeper Negri, 21, said the occasion would not get in the way of the important job they needed to do."We take each game as it comes," she said. "We must put in a good performance, and it will be a bonus if we get the three points at Portman Road."The goalkeeper was signed last summer, having helped Crystal Palace win the Championship, and she has not yet played at the stadium."I am really excited to be part of it this year, being able to showcase what I can do personally and what we can do as a team," she said."I have been involved in big games before. I am used to the pressure of having a crowd and lots of outside noise. I can't wait."
Manager Joe Sheehan joined the club in 2019 and has guided the team to the third tier of women's football."Last year, we had an incredible attendance," he said."Seeing so many supporters [made it feel] like a typical men's matchday, but just on a slightly smaller scale."It was all about being trailblazers, to inspire the community and try to put on a performance to leave a lasting memory. It was a huge success."Sheehan said there were a number of bright players coming through the club's youth development pathway, which has been boosted by the rising prominence of the women's team.He is also pleased to see attendances continue to grow at Felixstowe, where Town Women play their regular home games."There always seems to be new fans – boys, girls, parents, pets! The club has been moving on an upwards trajectory in recent years and I feel our growth has been boosted following last season's game [at Portman Road]."
Leah Mitchell signed her first professional contract last July. The defender, who was named player of the month in February, took time out from preparations this week to spend time with the Women's under-14s and under-16s performance squads – a programme run by the Ipswich Town Foundation."It is always great to see the young girls play. I was one of them once," she said."Nowadays, there are so many professional female footballers for young girls to look up to. It is different from even a couple of years ago."The girls now have role models in the women's game, not just the men."Mitchell, 19, said the recent increased coverage of the women's game had inspired her."I loved it," she said. "I thought to myself it could be me, whereas before it was always the men I was watching."She added that she was pleased so many of the girls from the club's development squads would be watching on Sunday."We are not nervous – we are just so excited to play at this incredible stadium again. We can't wait to put on a show!"

Despite that, Fernandez could face competition for his place after Maresca suggested he sees Brazilian Andrey Santos more as an attacking player than a defensive one. The highly-rated 21-year-old has rejoined the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Esperance. Maresca said: 'His season has been very good but I think you need time to adapt. 'In terms of position, I see Andrey in this moment in more like Enzo's position than Romeo's (Lavia) position. 'The Premier League demands (players) to be physically strong. In this moment, I see Andrey more of an attacking player than defensive in the field.' Maresca added that he hopes 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong will stay with the club despite being linked with Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund. He said: 'My idea or my plan with Josh is quite clear. I think he potentially can be a top defender for this club. I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us.' Maresca would also like England international Trevoh Chalobah to stay, but offered no guarantees. He said: 'All the players that are here with us, I don't want to lose them but when the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen – not only for Trevoh, for (all) the 25 players of the squad.' Jo Potter's surprising Rangers exit may suit both parties
Potter won four trophies at Rangers with a double each season and although there were questions asked that the team with the biggest budget in the league did not claim the championship, the understanding is that internally Potter retained the full support of the club. Indeed, the Ibrox side were keen to keep her rather than take the fairly meagre compensation on offer from Crystal Palace as she looks to take the London club back up to the top flight. There were accusations among some of the support that Rangers lacked the mentality to get over the line in terms of coping with the pressures that go hand-in-hand with winning a Championship. To that end, this parting of the ways may suit both parties. And while people will point to the lack of a title, particularly given Rangers' resources, Potter was influential in helping to establish the foundations of an under-20 side while the staff for the women's side went up by 30%. At times she offered some compelling insight on this, all the more so since her time with England came before the burst of interest that the Lionesses have enjoyed since winning the Euros. There was always a sense that she would cut her managerial teeth in the SWPL before heading back across the border. But it is no bad reflection on the SWPL to have key personnel in terms of players and managers attracting attention. Fran Alonso claimed a bold move to the States on the back of what he achieved at Celtic – short-lived and also without winning a title – while there remains a pathway for players to head to the riches of England. The current crop of exciting young players who are emerging into the national team will all harbour quiet ambitions of going on to play at a level where things on and off the park feel significantly elevated from what they are in the SWPL. One suspects she would have given a huge seal of approval to the decision to play as many home SWPL games as possible at Ibrox this season. Aside from illustrating the club's commitment to the women's game, it also facilitates supporters who are at ease with Ibrox and its surrounds. Aside from anything else, the example of Arsenal south of the border would show that it is a massive step in the right direction. AND ANOTHER THING Elena Sadiku's gig at the Euros in her Swedish homeland will offer the Celtic boss the chance to get inside a tournament that some of her charges did not. As Scotland find themselves on the outside looking in again this summer as another major competition kicks off, Sadiku at least will have a ringside seat. The Celtic manager will work with Swedish TV to cover the tournament, which kicks off in Switzerland next week. It will also provide an opportunity to keep her profile high on the back of a year in which she found it elevated through a FIFA Best nomination and Champions League participation with Celtic. It will be interesting to see, however, what effect it may have on Celtic's pre-season schedule – and whether she is back from media duties to oversee the countdown to the season kicking off. This week the club announced a parting of the ways with seven players while discussions are ongoing with another three. One of those released scored the goal that took Celtic into the Champions League this season. Sadiku had suggested at the back of the last campaign that the players who had not improved were those that she had not signed for Celtic. Of those released this week, Sadiku did not sign any of them. The confirmation this week that Stewart McGuire is the new Head of Women's Football Operations should signal the beginning of the foundations going down for the start of the new season. One can only assume there has been a list of targets left on his desk. AND FINALLY Save us the hand wringing over the Swiss women's team losing to FC Lucern's under-15s. Having also lost 2-1 to under-15 side FC Solothurn as they prepare for the Euros, there has been much laughing and pointing across social media as obviously this clearly identifies just how poor the standard of the women's game is, right? The only thing it shows is the difference in physiology between male and female athletes. It is not about skill or tactics or ability but rather a differential in muscle mass, strength and testosterone levels. In the same way that male and female tennis games focus on different attributes – Serena Williams said it was two different sports – women's football cannot be held up and compared to the men's.
