Ryne Nelson retires 16 straight as Diamondbacks knock off Royals
The Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak and evened the three-game series.
The Royals had won three of their last four.
Nelson (5-2) allowed a run and four hits over seven innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Freddy Fermin's looping single to right center broke the spell of 16 consecutive batters retired with one out in the sixth. Jonathan India lined a single to center one out later to send Fermin to third. Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a run-scoring single to right to put the Royals on the board and make the score 4-1.
Nelson got help in preventing further damage in the inning when centerfielder Alek Thomas made a sliding catch coming in on Vinnie Pasquantino's liner with two out and runners on first and third.
Kansas City starter and loser Michael Wacha (4-9) gave up four runs and four hits in four-plus innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez.
Lourdes Gurriel's two-run double in the fifth doubled the lead to 4-0 and James McCann's RBI double in the seventh made it 5-1.
Grichuk added his two-run homer in the seventh. The drive to right-centerfield was originally called an inside the park home run. But replays showed the ball actually went over the fence, hit a chair and ricocheted back onto the field. It was Grichuk's fifth home run.
Diamondbacks right fielder and leadoff man Corbin Carroll returned after being out since June 18, when he suffered a chip fracture of his left wrist. He went hitless in five at-bats.

Rangers activate 1B/DH Joc Pederson from injured list
July 27 - The Texas Rangers activated designated hitter/first baseman Joc Pederson from the 10-day injured list on Sunday. Pederson, who missed two months with a fractured right hand, batted fifth as the DH in Sunday's series finale against the visiting Atlanta Braves. Pederson, 33, was hit by a pitch by White Sox right-hander Bryse Wilson on May 24 in Chicago. He batted .131 with two homers and six RBIs in 46 games before the injury. A two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Pederson is a career .237 hitter with 211 home runs and 555 RBIs in 1,318 games with six teams. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014-20. The Rangers optioned utilityman Michael Helman to Triple-A Round Rock to make room for Pederson on the 26-man roster. Report: Dolphins, Minkah Fitzpatrick agree to reworked deal
July 27 - The Miami Dolphins and All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick agreed to a reworked contract, ESPN reported on Sunday. Fitzpatrick will receive a $16.435 million signing bonus and Miami will save $11 million against the 2025 salary cap, per the report. The Dolphins acquired Fitzpatrick from Pittsburgh last month in a trade that sent cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to the Steelers. Fitzpatrick signed a four-year, $73.6 million extension with the Steelers in 2022 and hopes to eventually sign a long-term deal with Miami, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. "We are comfortable with this commitment to Minkah as we continue to work with the Dolphins on a multiyear extension," Rosenhaus told ESPN on Sunday. Fitzpatrick, 28, is a five-time Pro Bowl and three-time All-Pro selection who launched his career in Miami as a first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. Fitzpatrick recorded 96 tackles and one interception in 17 starts last season. He has 20 picks, 54 passes defensed and 608 tackles in 106 career games (101 starts) with the Dolphins (2018-19) and Steelers. --Field Level Media

Shedeur Sanders suffers more embarrassment as Browns GM calls out NFL Draft flop for 'not smart' actions
Before the 2025 NFL season has even begun, the Cleveland Browns have already been forced to address Shedeur Sanders' behavior away from the field. The quarterback suffered a humiliating slide in the NFL Draft in April, tumbling down into the fifth round amid general managers' reported fears over his maturity. And the 23-year-old, who was eventually taken by the Browns with the 144th overall pick, may have already proven those concerns to be valid. The signal caller, who is the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, has already picked up two speeding tickets this offseason. GM Andrew Berry addressed the issue as training camp kicked off this week, admitting it wasn't a good luck for the Colorado Buffaloes product. 'Not smart. Just not smart,' Berry told reporters. 'It's something that we've addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications, he understands the consequences. It's not just about yourself. It's not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people. … A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, it's just dangerous.' Last month, Shedeur was ticketed for driving 91mph in a 65mph zone and 101mph in a 60mph zone. And it was that second violation that led to the revelation of the first, as well as a missed court appearance. Many NFL observers considered the former Colorado quarterback to be a nailed-on first round pick at the Draft this year - some even said he should be the first pick. But after a tumultuous run-up to the event, where multiple teams took a dislike to Sanders' attitude, he slid all the way down to the fifth round before the Browns put him out of his misery by taking him with the 144th pick. Fast forward to July and, as one of four quarterbacks on the roster - and the one ranked fourth on the depth chart - he has been a peripheral figure in the early days of Browns camp. 'I'm not even going to think about that or have that even in my thought process of why it is,' Sanders said about practicing with the third and fourth team this week. 'It doesn't make me feel down or it doesn't make me feel left out or anything because I know who I am as a person. I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team.' Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett have mainly split first team reps between them while Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick at quarterback in the draft, also had one 11-on-11 drill. Who will start at signal caller for the first game against Cincinnati Bengals on September 7 is uncertain but Sanders has acknowledged that it is unlikely to be him. 'I know whenever I get my opportunity, I've got to maximize it,' he said. 'I just got to think about what I could do to get better even if I´m not getting reps.'
