Appeals Court rejects Hydroshoppe, Menara KL injunction appeal
The decision was delivered by a three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, Datuk Dr Choo Kah Sing and Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
Justice Sequerah, who delivered the court's unanimous decision, said Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd failed to meet the legal threshold for the grant of an ad interim injunction.
'We are of the view that there is no status quo to maintain as the fifth supplementary agreement has lapsed on March 31, this year,' he said.
Justice Sequerah ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay legal costs totalling RM30,000 to the respondents.
The respondents were the Ministry of Communications, its minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the government, LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd.
The appeal was against the decision of the High Court in April, this year which had similarly dismissed the application for the ad interim injunction.
Hydroshoppe and Menara KL had filed a breach of contract suit against the respondents, claiming that LSH and its units had induced a breach of contract that the companies (Hydroshoppe and Menara KL) had agreed to with the government in an Aug 2022 meeting.
They claimed that LSH Capital and its units had committed dishonest assistance, and want the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master to be declared void and unlawful.
They are also claiming an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession of the iconic Kuala Lumpur landmark building to be transferred back to them.
The High Court will hear the interparte injunction on June 9. It will also hear on June 5, an ex parte contempt application filed by the companies.
In the proceedings before the Court of Appeal today, lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram represented Hydroshoppe and Menara Kuala Lumpur, Senior Federal Counsel Ahmad Hanir Hambaly@Arwi for the Ministry of Communications, Fahmi and the government.
Lawyer Datuk Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master, LSH Best Builders and Service Master.

KOTA KINABALU (July 12): The Malaysian Foundation for Innovation (YIM) is currently collaborating with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to develop a smart application aimed at enhancing the safety and experience of mountain climbers. YIM chief executive officer Dr Sharmila Mohamed Salleh said the project, initiated last year, is expected to be completed in 2026 and will result in a first-of-its-kind product in the Malaysian market. 'This application will create a new experience for climbing enthusiasts, especially those lacking formal training or stamina,' she said when met here yesterday. She said the innovation is designed to address common challenges faced by climbers, such as health issues or getting lost due to lack of internet connectivity. 'This equipment will ensure accurate tracking of the climber's location, provide real-time health updates, record the route taken, and offer many other features,' she added. Sharmila also revealed that the technology has helped identify a new 40-kilometre climbing route that passes through several villages, providing economic opportunities to local communities. 'The route doesn't lead up to Mount Kinabalu itself, but offers breathtaking views of the mountain and has the potential to become Sabah's next tourism gem,' she said, adding that the location is currently not open to the public, although some climbers have already explored it. YIM, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, has been actively supporting local innovation through various programmes and funding initiatives. According to Sharmila, the foundation has helped numerous innovators nationwide develop market-ready products with high value-added potential, some of which have entered both local and international markets. 'We currently have 11 participants under this programme, including several from Sabah,' she said, noting that each participant receives a grant of RM80,000 to grow their business. She highlighted the success of one participant, Anne Antah, founder of Chanteek Borneo Sdn Bhd, who has made a name for herself through the design of textiles featuring ethnic Sabah motifs and other handcrafted items.

Man loses RM500k to fake investment scam in Sungai Bakap
GEORGE TOWN: A man lost RM500,000 after falling victim to a fake online investment scam that promised high returns in a short time in Sungai Bakap here, recently. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 53-year-old, a former warehouse assistant supervisor in Singapore, had come across a Facebook ad promoting stock investments on March 21 and later contacted a woman who identified herself as 'Liane'. 'She introduced him to an investment called 'Silver Peak CP' through a mobile app that promised quick and high returns. Attracted by the offer, the victim downloaded the app and started investing,' he said in a statement today. Between March 22 and June 24, the victim made 22 transactions into six different bank accounts provided by the suspect, totalling RM500,000. After that, he could no longer access the app. Mohd Alwi said police are investigating and working to track down the syndicate. The case is being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

Govt boosts veterans' economy with PUVET programme in Malaysia
ALOR GAJAH: The government is committed to enhancing the economic well-being of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans through the Veteran Economic Empowerment Programme (PUVET). Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said the programme provides support, including equipment, training, and business capital, to improve competitiveness, with a digital business training programme, soon to be launched in Kelantan being its latest initiative. 'This is a pilot project known as 'Beg Kuning' (Yellow Bag), where selected veteran entrepreneurs will be trained to run digital or online businesses. 'The programme is a collaboration between the Defence Ministry, government-linked companies (GLCs), and several other agencies,' he told reporters in Kampung Lendu here today after meeting veterans under the MADANI Veterans' Care programme, which was also attended by Veterans Affairs Department deputy director-general Sophian Isswandy Ismail. Adly met 26 veteran families, including widows and entrepreneurs, in Alor Gajah, Melaka and Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan and presented Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM) medals, assistance, Rahmah baskets, and business support during the programme. Adly noted that PUVET has received an annual grant of RM1 million since its introduction in 2023 through collaboration with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) under Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW). 'Through the RM1 million grant, selected recipients receive in-kind grants worth around RM5,000, including fish feed, seeds, equipment, and basic business machines,' he shared. He said that nearly 70 per cent of the approximately 5,000 retired veterans have chosen to venture into entrepreneurship, and programmes like PUVET are essential in providing comprehensive support for this group.
