Former Kansas FB Jared Casey appreciates the opportunity with the Kansas City Chiefs
After this year's draft, the Kansas City Chiefs invited some undrafted free agents to their rookie minicamp, including former Kansas Jayhawks standout Jared Casey. During his press conference that weekend, he spoke proudly about the opportunity in camp.
"Just being able to go out and wear a Chiefs jersey," said Casey, "and Chiefs helmet is kind of just a dream come true."
Casey played four home games for Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium during the 2024 season, so he was familiar with his new surroundings. He will compete for a hopeful roster spot as the tight end and fullback option, understanding he is the underdog.
"This is a surreal experience, and there are a lot of guys here competing for spots on the team, and same as I am," said Casey. "So, you know, you kind of got to have that in the back of your mind, like what is it after football?"
In 2024, Casey played in all 12 games as a senior, starting eight. He tied a career-high with 18 receptions, 203 yards, and two touchdowns. He earned CSC Academic Second Team All-America and First Team All-Big 12 honors as a fullback.

While the San Francisco 49ers have a few jobs up for grabs in training camp ahead of their 2025 campaign, one player who's set in his spot is right tackle Colton McKivitz. McKivitz, 28, was San Francisco's fifth-round pick (No. 153 overall) in the 2020 NFL draft after a five-year collegiate career at West Virginia, where he earned All-Big 12 and All-American honors as a senior. After he spent most of his rookie season as a backup and most of the following year on the practice squad, McKivitz eventually took over as the team's starting right tackle in 2023 and has started all 34 games over the last two seasons. As he prepares to enter his third season in the role, McKivitz believes he'll be recognized as one of the top players at his position in the NFL in 2025. 'I'm going to be a Pro Bowler this year, I've told countless people," McKivitz shared with NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco earlier this week. "I'm just putting it out there just because that's going to hold me accountable and get me to where I want to go. If you don't fight for it, you won't get it.' The 49ers are no strangers to having one of their starting tackles make the Pro Bowl, as left tackle Trent Williams made it four straight seasons from 2020-23. However, McKivitz will really have to play great in 2025 to unseat Philadelphia's Lane Johnson, who's made the Pro Bowl each of the last three seasons and has made six in his career. Interestingly, the San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado reported that McKivitiz had the "most impressive offensive/defensive lineman one-on-one rep of the day" on Friday, as he completely shut down a pass rush from Nick Bosa. Mike Yastrzemski homers in his first at bat with Royals after they acquired him at trade deadline
TORONTO (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski made quite the early impression on his new teammates by homering in his first plate appearance with the Kansas City Royals on Friday, a day after they acquired him from the San Francisco Giants. Yastrzemski hit a 370-foot blast over the wall in right-center field while facing Kevin Gausman in the second inning of the Royals' game against the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. His two-run shot gave the Royals a 2-1 lead. The Royals gave up minor league pitcher Yunior Marte in the trade that brought Yastrzemski to Kansas City. Yastrzemski, who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, was batting .231 with a .330 on-base percentage, .355 slugging percentage, eight homers, 28 RBIs and six steals in 96 games with the Giants. The 34-year-old Yastrzemski had spent his entire major league career with San Francisco.
