S'wakian filmmaker Cheyenne Tan inducted as national active member of Television Academy
KUCHING (Aug 4): Two-time Oscar-nominated Sarawakian filmmaker Cheyenne Tan has been officially inducted as a national active member of the Television Academy in its Documentary Programming Peer Group, making her eligible to vote for the prestigious Primetime Emmy Awards.
As a member of the academy, Tan, who is originally from Kuching and now based in Los Angeles, California, will have access to exclusive industry events, networking opportunities, private screenings, and annual voting privileges in the Primetime Emmys.
'I am incredibly grateful to be welcomed into the Television Academy. It's not just an honour; it's also a responsibility I take seriously.
'I hope to help elevate work that's not just excellent television but also bold, nuanced, and reflective of the diverse world we live in,' she told The Borneo Post in an email correspondence.
She said that as someone working in non-fiction, she has witnessed firsthand how award attention can open doors for vital, under-represented voices.
'Awards matter. They impact what gets funded, distributed, and platformed, and I want to use that influence responsibly,' she added.
The Television Academy, which was founded in 1946, is dedicated to honouring excellence in television.
Membership is offered to industry professionals actively working in television production and distribution, with eligibility based on peer group affiliation and a nominated or significant body of work.
Tan shared that as an active voting member for the Emmys, she will be eligible to cast votes in the general programme categories, which include Outstanding Drama Series, Comedy Series, Limited Series and so on.
'However, only specific peer groups can vote in the other categories. Since I am in the Documentary Programming Peer Group, I can vote in the documentary or non-fiction programmes as well.
'Only peer groups vote for the specific peer group categories, so, for example, actors vote for actors, directors for directors, and in my case, documentarians vote for their fellow documentarians,' she explained.
Tan's notable producing credits for television include 'Turning Point: The Vietnam War' (Netflix, 2025), a five-part docu-series that documents the Vietnam War, and its impact on those involved; 'The Romantics' (Netflix, 2023), a four-part documentary series about the history of Bollywood; and an Emmy nomination for 'Through Our Eyes: Shelter' (HBO Max, 2021) that follows three unhoused children and their parents over one summer in Los Angeles as they seek steady housing.
She has continued to make waves in the documentary film world where earlier this year, the short documentary 'I Am Ready, Warden'—which she co-produced—was nominated for an Oscar at the 97th Academy Awards.
The film, centred on a Texas death row inmate seeking redemption, premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and won the Jury Award at the Austin Film Festival.
She earned her first Oscar nomination in 2020 for 'St. Louis Superman', a short documentary which follows activist, battle rapper, and former politician Bruce Franks Jr. overcoming personal trauma and political obstacles to pass a critical bill for his community.

‘Wednesday' is back: Netflix's dark darling returns with Addams family drama and female power in season two
LONDON, Aug 5 — Actress Jenna Ortega and the creators of the hit Netflix series Wednesday are hoping to surpass expectations as the show returns to screens after almost three years. The dark fantasy series' first season, which premiered in November 2022, ranks as Netflix's most popular English-language show of all time, with more than 252 million views in the first 91 days of release. As well as reprising the titular role, Ortega, 22, took on executive producer duties for the new season. Filmmaker Tim Burton also returns as one of the directors and executive producers. 'Play of emotions' Bringing the Addams Family to the academy allowed co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to expand the storylines of the characters introduced in the first season and explore mother-daughter dynamics. 'We thought, wouldn't that be, for Wednesday, the ultimate thorn in her side if Morticia (her mother) came to school,' said Millar. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia, promised fast-paced scenes between the two. 'It's a dance and a play of emotions,' Zeta-Jones said. The season's focus on female relationships stood out as one of its stronger points for Ortega. 'We're so oftentimes taught to compete against one another and there's always some sort of comparing game that people are going to enforce on you,' Ortega said. 'What I love about the women I am working with and the characters, every woman in this show wants to see the other succeed. I think that's really important for young people to see today,' she added. The sophomore season also introduces new characters, including Steve Buscemi's Nevermore principal Barry Dort and the Addams family matriarch Grandmama Hester Frump, played by Joanna Lumley. Pop star Lady Gaga makes a guest star appearance as a teacher in Part 2. Wednesday has already been renewed for a third season, with Gough and Millar in the writers' room 'cooking that up' and ready to go beyond. 'We have goalposts for other things. SEOUL: South Korean actor Song Young-kyu, aged 55, was found dead in a parked car in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on Monday morning, according to police. The authorities have stated there are no signs of foul play and an investigation is underway, the Korea Herald reported. They plan to interview his family to better understand the circumstances of his death. A veteran actor with a career spanning three decades, Song was well-known for his supporting role as a tough squad chief in the 2019 box office hit Extreme Job. His international recognition grew with appearances in popular streaming series like Netflix's Narco-Saints and Disney+'s Big Bet, both released in 2022. The actor's career had recently come under intense scrutiny following a drunk-driving incident on June 19. Actor Gary Busey, 81, pleads guilty to groping woman at horror movie convention

Photo: TNS Actor Gary Busey pleaded guilty to a sex crime charge Thursday (July 31) in connection to a 2022 incident at a horror movie convention in New Jersey, United States. Busey, 81, pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact after admitting to intentionally touching a woman inappropriately at the Monster-Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill on Aug. 13, 2022. 'It was not an accidental touching,' Busey told the judge during a Zoom hearing published by CourtTV. Busey had initially been charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment. The actor was accused of groping at least three women during photo-ops at the convention and attempting to remove one's bra. As the result of a plea agreement, three of those charges were dropped. For the one remaining count of criminal sexual contact, Busey now faces between one and five years of probation, as well as fines. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept 18. Prior to Busey entering his guilty plea, his defense attorney had attempted to get the indictment dismissed, claiming that police failed to question certain witnesses. A jurist denied that motion, confirming that witness testimony had been gathered and properly presented to the grand jury. Busey has appeared in more than 150 movies. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for The Buddy Holly Story and later starred in action movies like Lethal Weapon , Point Break and Under Siege . He went on to appear on a number of reality shows, including The Surreal Life and I'm With Busey .
