Sydney Sweeney Details 'Crazy' 30-Pound Transformation To Play Christy Martin In Biopic: 'My Body Was Completely Different'

Sydney Sweeney is sharing the 'crazy' transformation and preparation that went into portraying pioneering female boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic set for release later this year.
Speaking to W Magazine for the actress' new cover story, the film's director David Michôd said the Emmy-nominated Euphoria star gained more than 30 pounds to play the athlete, who put female boxing on the map in the '90s, covered Sports Illustrated and fought on Mike Tyson's undercard.

'I loved it,' the Anyone but You star said of the behind-the-scenes training. 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.'
Sweeney, who also donned brown contact lenses and a brunette wig fashioned into a mullet-like hairstyle for the role, added, 'My body was completely different. I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, 'Oh my god.' But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.'
Amid production for the film last year, which has since wrapped, Sweeney shared the first photos of herself as Martin, writing at the time on social media, 'Over the past few months, i've been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I'm honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon.'
The as-yet untitled biopic, which hails from a script co-written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, follows Martin's story as the first breakout in U.S. female boxing. The biopic will trace her rise to fame and the abuse she faced at the hands of her then-husband, who attempted to murder her.
'Our film is a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga. Sydney trained her butt off to play the part. The beauty of Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine,' Michôd told W Magazine of the project.
Just this weekend, Sweeney and Martin were seen during the International Boxing Hall of Fame's annual Parade of Champions held in Canastota, NY, where the actress was the grand marshal of the event.
Outside of the biopic, Sweeney just wrapped production on The Housemaid, a Paul Feig-helmed adaptation which she co-produced. She is currently filming for Euphoria Season 3, as well as producing and starring in Scandalous! — directed by Colman Domingo, about the relationship between Sammy Davis Jr. and Kim Novak. Her previously announced Barbarella remake is also in process. Beyond that, she will be seen in Americana, releasing Aug. 22, 2025.

Beloved '70s Rock Icon Claimed This Guitar Legend 'Set Music Back 20 Years'

Beloved '70s Rock Icon Claimed This Guitar Legend 'Set Music Back 20 Years' originally appeared on Parade. AC/DC guitarist Angus Young has been a trendsetter in the rock world for decades — but when it comes to musicians who experiment with different sounds, he hasn't always been generous with praise. In a newly resurfaced 1986 interview with Guitar Worldmagazine, the legendary guitarist revealed the one artist he believes didn't push music forward, but rather held it back. Young made it clear he was never a fan of effects-heavy playing — whether it was tremolo, wah-wah or phaser — and has always preferred to keep things simple. 'I just plugged it into the amp and played,' he said. 'I never used any of those 'wangy' bars of stuff like that. Those things never appealed to me. If I want to get a similar kind of sound, I just de-tune the strings.' While AC/DC is known for their signature distortion, they've largely steered clear of other effects. According to Young, artists who lean too heavily on gear aren't truly playing guitar the way it's meant to be played. And when asked to name names, Young didn't hold back. He singled out Hank Marvin — lead guitarist for The Shadows, Cliff Richard's backing band in the late '50s and '60s. 'Cliff Richard used to have this guy in his backing band, Hank Marvin,' he said. 'Who used that thing on almost every note.' Young went on to describe Marvin as more of a relic of the past than a trailblazer. 'He was like a Buddy Holly clone, he used to do these silly little steps,' Young recalled. 'Guys like Hank set the music world back 20 years. I couldn't believe guitarists like [Jeff] Beck looked at him as an inspiration. Whenever I saw guys like Hank Marvin, I'd always go in the complete reverse of what they were doing.' Though Marvin found success in his own right — playing with legends like Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney, Dire Straits and Brian May — Young remained unimpressed, especially with Marvin's love of tremolo. In fact, Young had dismissed that effect years earlier. 'They [my early instruments] did have tremolos, but I took it off,' he told journalist Steven Rosen in a 1983 interview. 'I used to fool around with them, but you begin sounding like Hank Marvin.' While Young's opinions were strong at the time, the interview is nearly 40 years old — and there's always a chance his views have mellowed since then. However, his opinions from the past serve as a reminder that even the biggest names in rock have their own limits when it comes to experimentation. Production on 'Young Washington' is expected to begin later this summer, with no word yet on who will be cast as George Washington. 'Our shared commitment to inspirational, powerful storytelling made 'Young Washington' an easy project to partner on with Wonder,' Angel Studios president Jordan Harmon said in a statement. 'George Washington helped shape our nation and so many of the American values we hold dear. I can't imagine a more meaningful way to celebrate America's 250th birthday than by watching this adaptation of such a pivotal period in his young life.' 'I've dreamed of telling the powerful origin story of George Washington for nearly a decade. It's a story of a true pioneer, which makes it the perfect project to partner on with the pioneers at Angel and their world-class distribution network,' Erwin said.
