Probe into attempted murder of Sandringham teacher leads to 8 arrests
Capt Tintswalo Sibeko said the officers are investigating an attempted murder case opened in Sandringham on December 3, where a deputy principal at a local school was shot and wounded.
They traced two suspects to Jeppe and one in Phumula near Vosloorus on Wednesday morning. A few hours later, five more suspects, in a Toyota Corolla, were apprehended on the M2 highway, near the Maritzburg on-ramp within the Jeppe policing precinct. They were allegedly about to commit an armed robbery.
Police seized five handguns and ammunition.
'Three of the suspects have been linked to attempted murder while five have, for now, been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,' Sibeko said.

Teen girl targeted by Instagram predator in KZN
A KZN family called for help after a man who met their teenage daughter on Instagram and threatened her arrived at their home. In the digital era, children can use their devices to interact with strangers on social media. For a 13-year-old girl from Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), what began as an online friendship with a man on Instagram turned into a nightmare when he shared explicit content, threatened her, and tracked her down. On Monday afternoon, officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were called to a residence after an Instagram follower, who had threatened the girl's life, was discovered outside her home at approximately 3.17 pm. KZN teen's stalking outside her home When the officers arrived at the home, the 18-year-old man had fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla. The girl's family had also locked themselves inside the house. The perpetrator has been identified as a resident of Kenville, in KZN, and works for a catering company. Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said the family told the officers that their Grade 8 daughter had been chatting to a man who befriended her on Instagram in April 2024. 'The girl became concerned for her safety when the suspect stalked her at school and on excursions and knew her whereabouts,' Balram said. 'He then threatened her with exposing her nudes and demanded money.' Man, 18, threatened to expose teen's explicit images for money Pictures: Supplied. In South African law, sexually explicit photographs, videos and communications, including those sent between minors under the age of 18, may be classified as child pornography, and the taker of the image, the recipient of the image, and anyone who shares the content may be charged and found guilty of crimes. Unfortunately, the teenage girl has shared personal details with the man, who used the information to track down her residential address and the work locations of her parents. The situation escalated to threats of kidnapping and murder. Reaction officers have obtained facial images of the suspect, which have been forwarded to the police. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) warned of the safety risks of meeting with online predators. Risks linked to online predators 'The internet is a great space and resource for children and teenagers, giving them access to a wealth of information and interaction owing to a vast array of platforms, including social media, email and text messaging,' the department said in April. 'Unfortunately, with this vast access lies the safety risk of meeting with online predators. Online predators are adults who often, in a sexually motivated way, approach children and teenagers online to exploit their innocence and inexperience.' Such behaviour exposes children to the risks of trafficking and child sexual exploitation. NOW READ: WATCH: Woman badly beaten by alleged stalker ex after arriving at work

Alleged repeat offender caught smuggling stolen car at Beitbridge
A coordinated anti-smuggling operation in Limpopo resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man and the recovery of a stolen white Toyota Corolla Cross valued at R400,000. The suspect was allegedly attempting to smuggle the vehicle across the Beitbridge Port of Entry. On 23 June 2025, the Provincial Tracking Team and partner law enforcement agencies acted on intelligence that a stolen car from Gauteng was en route to the border. Eventually, surveillance units located the vehicle on the R521 near Vivo in the Mara policing area and intercepted it. Investigators confirmed that someone reported the Toyota Corolla stolen over the weekend from the Brooklyn policing area in Pretoria. Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. Police revealed that they arrested the same suspect in April 2024 for smuggling a stolen Toyota Hilux GD6 to Musina. The Polokwane Magistrate's Court had released him on bail, and the Polokwane Regional Court scheduled his next appearance for 28 July 2025. However, the Senwabarwana Magistrate's Court will hear his case on 25 June 2025. He will face a charge of possessing a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Authorities expect to revoke his existing bail after he allegedly committed the same offence again, violating his bail conditions. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the operation's success, further highlighting the value of inter-agency collaboration in disrupting cross-border vehicle smuggling. If any member is found to be on the wrong side of the law, they will face the consequences – without fear or favour.' On Friday, members of the Tonga Task Team under the Ehlanzeni District Police recovered 24 compressed bags of dagga during a high-speed chase in the Sibange area. The suspect fled on foot into nearby bushes after abandoning a grey VW Polo. On April 14, a Barberton Agri farmer reported suspicious activity on the outskirts of his farm near the Kaapsehoop Road. Responding officers from Hi-Tech Security found no suspects on scene, but recovered 800kg of dagga. Earlier this year, on January 28, during routine patrols, the White River Flying Squad intercepted two suspects in a white Toyota Quantum on the R538 near KMI Airport, discovering 50 compressed bags of dagga weighing approximately 1 020kg. ALSO READ: Two men arrested in Barberton for dealing in dagga On January 14, the police recovered 10 bags of dagga weighing about 270kg during a stop-and-search operation near Sheba Siding, Barberton. Officers had pulled over a white Isuzu bakkie travelling from Low's Creek. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, spokesperson of the Mpumalanga police, said: 'We are concerned about the increased number of individuals dealing in dagga, particularly within the province. However, with continued efforts such as Operation Shanela 2, we are able to intercept traffickers. Stations where dagga was seized include Tonga, Wakkerstroom, Mayflower, and the Mahamba Border Post. Most of the dagga appears to originate from eSwatini. We are continuing our efforts and aim to dismantle these syndicates.' These are just a few of the many cases currently under investigation.
