Puri international airport project has received key approvals, making progress: Min
While the ministry gave 'in-principle' approval to the project on May 6, the expert appraisal committee (EAC) recommended environmental clearance on June 5, with Phase-1 of the airport to have an estimated passenger handling capacity of 4.6 million per annum, the minister's reply revealed.
Responding to a question from Rajya Sabha member Subhasish Khuntia, who wanted to know the current status of the proposed airport and other related issues, the minister said.
"The phase-1 of the greenfield airport project is designed to handle 4.6 million passengers annually, positioning it as a major aviation hub in eastern India. The development follows the two-stage approval process outlined in the Greenfield Airports Policy, 2008, which includes site clearance and 'in-principle' approval.

State govt, as the project proponent, is responsible for crucial aspects including land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement, funding and securing mandatory environmental clearances.

The ministry of defence has already given its no-objection for the project.
"The completion timeline depends on various factors such as land acquisition, mandatory clearances and financial closure," Naidu said. He emphasised the project's potential economic impact, citing an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study that shows air connectivity has an economic multiplier effect of 3.25 and an employment multiplier of 6.1.
The airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for regional development, boosting tourism, generating employment, and enhancing land values in the surrounding areas. It is anticipated to lead to increased tax revenues and stamp duty collections for the state govt.
The project's strategic location in Puri, a major pilgrimage centre, is expected to significantly boost religious tourism and facilitate easier access for international visitors to Jagannath Temple.

BC Janardhan Reddy, special chief secretary for roads and buildings, investments, and infrastructure, inaugurated the experimental road repair work in Mandadam village near the secretariat on Monday. Reddy said that they have taken up the experiment following the instructions from chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The official further said that it was part of chief minister's vision of creating "wealth from waste." He explained that that experts were monitoring the effectiveness of the "Ecofix" mixture, made from steel slag and tar, for repairing potholes during the rainy season. He said that road repairs and development initiatives will be undertaken in the future based on the findings of the pilot project. He started calling the shots within the party. He died in 2009. After Durga's death, his younger brother Hemant Soren took over as the successor of Guruji. This led to family feud as Durga's widow Sita Soren was unhappy with Hemant's move. She later joined BJP, but lost Jama assembly polls to JMM Candidate Lois Marandi in 2024 assembly polls. Guruji slowly started to keep himself out of the limelight. On April 15, 2025, Hemant became party president, replacing Shibu. It can be said to be the end of Shibu era in JMM. But Guruji was and will remain the biggest crowd-puller for JMM in days to come. He did not actively campaigned for the party in 2024 assembly polls, but JMM flags with his familiar face and bow and arrow party symbol, kept fluttering in remote areas of the state. EOW revamped with cutting edge tech, friendly tools
1 2 Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the police has been revamped on the lines of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with stronger technical tools, faster investigations, and direct public access. The new measures were unveiled during a state-level workshop at the police headquarters in Lucknow. One of the biggest citizen-friendly reforms announced is easy public access to report financial crimes. Now, 112 (emergency helpline) has been integrated with EOW so that the common man can report cases of Ponzi scheme fraud, stamp fraud, plot/land fraud, multi-marketing fraud, trading, Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) fraud, and job fraud. "The agency is being transformed into a robust, trusted institution, both for professional enforcement and public outreach. Efforts are being made to ensure its officers receive professional expertise in line with the highest national standards," DGP Rajeev Krishna said. The agency has also developed eight animated booklets to alert citizens about different types of financial crimes they may encounter in daily life. We expect this initiative to significantly raise public awareness," Krishna said. Director general, EOW, Neera Rawat said, "The unit is being equipped with cutting-edge tools like a 24x7 Case Management Software (CMS) for real-time monitoring and faster case resolution. A new EOW logo, a citizen-awareness booklet, and a short film on financial crime prevention were also launched to engage and educate the public," she said.
