Stray dog issues continue to concern Johor Baru residents
Mayor Datuk Mohd Hafiz Ahmad said the council captured a total of 3,014 stray dogs in its jurisdiction last year.
"As of June this year, 219 complaints about stray dogs were received, compared to 650 complaints for the whole of last year.
"The Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated RM10,000 for the Stray Animal Management Campaign 2025 to prevent dog-related issues from becoming a public health concern," he said when launching the programme in Plentong on Sunday (July 20).
He said this year's campaign, themed 'Anjing Terbela, Komuniti Bahagia', includes awareness programmes for owners and local communities, licensing advocacy, and opportunities for pet adoption.
"This approach promotes more sustainable stray dog management without compromising animal welfare, public peace, or community safety.
"Campaigns like this are crucial in preventing diseases such as rabies, leptospirosis, salmonella, and others from spreading," he added.
Mohd Hafiz said the campaign builds on the city council's large-scale stray dog neutering programme, carried out over four sessions in collaboration with Iskandar Social Hero and Vet Partners Malaysia.
He said a total of 850 stray dogs were neutered in four phases, including 200 strays in October last year, followed by 165 in January this year, 264 in April, and 221 dogs on July 8 and 9.
He added that the campaign aims to help the public, non-governmental organisations, and stakeholders better understand the importance of sustainable stray dog population control.
"This, in turn, will reduce the risk of unwanted incidents resulting from uncontrolled stray populations," he said.

Family forced to live in derelict swiftlet building, aid on the way
KUALA NERUS: A family of eight forced to live in a crumbling former swiftlet birdhouse in Kampung Batin has drawn urgent attention from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW). KKDW Terengganu director, Md. Razi Md. Lazim said he was shocked and moved by the family's living conditions, describing the structure as "extremely run-down and not suitable for habitation" after visiting them. The family includes Mohd. Nazarudin Muhamat, 50, his wife, Nur Nadiatul Asyikin Muhammad Nasir, 36 and 6 children aged 3 to 12. "I immediately went to the location after being informed of this matter by the former state assemblyman of Seberang Takir, Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd. Rahman. "This swiftlet birdhouse building is extremely run-down and not suitable for habitation," he was quoted as saying by Kosmo after offering support to the family yesterday. Md Razi said the premise is owned by Nur Nadiatul Asyikin's mother and became the family's residence after they were unable to settle their rent arrears. The 'residence' will be temporarily renovated with the addition of a living room, kitchen, and toilet to improve the comfort of Mohd Nazarudin's family, he said. Meanwhile, Nur Nadiatul Asyikin said they had previously been living in Kuala Lumpur but returned to their hometown about five years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic due to financial hardship. They rented a house in the beginning, but were forced to move out after more than a year because they failed to pay a monthly rental of RM550. "My mother allowed us to stay in this building temporarily. If we need to use the toilet, we will go to the nearby petrol station," she said. Md. Razi works as a mechanic, while her wife sells ice-cream with an average income of RM1,000 a month. Their eldest child, who is 12 years old, has been diagnosed as a person with disabilities under the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) category. It is understood that the couple has only recently applied for assistance from the Social Welfare Department and the Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council.

463 media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA
PENAMPANG: A total of 463 media practitioners and veterans across Malaysia have received assistance from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund, aimed at supporting those struggling with health issues or financial difficulties. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the distribution, emphasizing the government's commitment to easing burdens faced by media personnel. 'We will increase our efforts with media associations and clubs in the states to help more media practitioners who are eligible to receive this assistance,' Fahmi said. He noted that funds allocated from previous HAWANA programmes, including a RM1 million contribution announced by the Prime Minister last year, remain unused. During the event, Fahmi presented aid to Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, who sustained severe injuries in a March road accident. Vicky suffered fractures in six left ribs and his left hand, requiring ongoing physiotherapy. With 18 years of service, he became the 24th Tabung Kasih@HAWANA recipient in Sabah. Fahmi also addressed concerns over low journalist salaries, particularly in Sabah, where some earn below RM2,000 despite long service. 'I will ask Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) to gather details for further discussion,' he said, adding that employment status—whether full-time or freelance—would be reviewed. Earlier this week, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin delivered aid to Sabah News journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is recovering from surgery due to intestinal complications. - Bernama
