BJP at Shaheen Bagh: Muslim girls should aim for the Army

Indian Express11-06-2025
In a move aimed at expanding its outreach into the Muslim-dominated areas of the national capital, the BJP's Minority Morcha held a 'minority chaupal' in Shaheen Bagh on Tuesday. The main purpose of this chaupal was to encourage young Muslim girls to consider careers in the Indian Army, it said.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, an Indian Army officer who garnered attention during Operation Sindoor, was repeatedly cited as a role model throughout the event. This was the BJP's first such chaupal in the Capital under a broader national campaign celebrating the first-year anniversary of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's third term in office.
The event was held in a modest hotel room in the heart of the neighbourhood that rose to national prominence during the 2020 anti-CAA protests.
'Our daughter should become strong, she should be educated, she should be independent…,' said Jamal Siddiqui, National President of the BJP Minority Morcha and chief guest at the event.
'If anyone tries to harass, scare, or intimidate her, she should be able to give a befitting reply. We have to take our daughters out of their homes and into society. They should also go to the border… and show the strength of Indian women.'
'To teach Pakistan a lesson, the leadership of (explaining) air strikes on terrorist bases was handed over to two daughters, Colonel Sophia and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, and the world has been introduced to the courage, valour and bravery of Indian women,' he added. The chaupal featured a small but engaged gathering of two women and 20 party workers, and sought to familiarise attendees with the Agniveer recruitment scheme and other opportunities in the Armed Forces. Organisers also distributed copies of the Constitution and announced a one-stop camp for registrations under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. 'This is not just about Army recruitment,' said Ashu Chaudhary, Delhi State Executive Member of the Minority Morcha and the event's coordinator. 'It's about rights, awareness, and helping women from our community imagine a future where they are leaders.'
Attendees were also handed 'data books' — kits detailing key government schemes across sectors such as education, employment, and health — with instructions to imitate similar minority chaupals in their localities and to share the data with other members of the Muslim community.
The BJP's choice of Shaheen Bagh for the pilot chaupal carries political weight. Once the epicentre of the months-long protests, led largely by Muslim women against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the neighbourhood had become a symbol of resistance — and now, as the BJP frames it, potential transformation.
'We all are sons of India. We all are citizens of India. These 11 years of the Modi government have brought light where there was darkness,' Siddiqui declared. Launching a scathing attack against the BJP's political rivals, he added, 'The Congress and AAP created that darkness. Now, it is our duty to spread awareness, take the government's message and schemes to the people.'

Congress targets govt, SEBI on Jane Street ‘market manipulation'

The Congress on Tuesday hit out at the SEBI and the government for not taking timely action against US algorithm trading firm Jane Street for 'stock market manipulation'. Congress head of social media department Supriya Shrinate said Jane Street had in 2024 admitted in a US court it made $1 billion in India in 2023 from the Indian options market by exploiting 'inefficiencies'. 'By 2024, that amount grew to $2.3 billion, which was 11.2% of all the money it made around the world. But SEBI didn't act on this information, it was only in February 2025 that SEBI issued a mild warning, a cautionary letter to Jane Street, warning against its questionable trading patterns. But the firm continued its manipulative trades till as late as May 2025,' Shrinate said. Criticising SEBI, she said its 'report shows that 93% of retail investors lost money in derivatives trading between FY2021 and FY2024'. 'In FY2024 alone, 91.1% of traders lost Rs 52,400 crore,' she said. She said instead of protecting small investors, SEBI turned a blind eye to 'rampant fraudulent activities'.

Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari brings out list of 50 Trinamool youth leaders ‘controlling' college campuses

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) presented a list of 50 Trinamool student leaders, accusing them of exerting unchecked power in various educational institutions across the State. 'This has just 50 names, but I can give 950 more,' Mr. Adhikari said while presenting what he called a 'gallery of lumpens'. In the slideshow, the alleged Trinamool student leaders were mostly shown to be ex-students, office bearers of the Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad (TMCP) and current employees of the same institution in posts ranging from non-teaching staff to assistant professor. He accused them of being 'notorious criminals' and of turning college union rooms into centres of debauchery where women would allegedly be harassed and substances would be consumed. 'They all received these job appointments in completely illegal ways. Worthy candidates had no opportunity to bag these posts. They were first given casual job appointments, which were later regularised by the Governing Bodies of the institution,' Mr Adhikari alleged. He further alleged that Governing Bodies of most higher education institutions are being headed by Trinamool Congress supporters. He further added that the student leaders would also enjoy access to the top leadership of the Trinamool. 'The college Governing Bodies have a free rein in the appointment of non-teaching staff. Trinamool cadre en masse have been hired through them. On the other hand, the few professors you see on the list were fraudulently appointed through the College Service Commission by Partha Chattopadhyay,' the BJP MLA said. Mr Chattopadhyay, who is the former State Education Minister, is currently behind bars in connection to the alleged school jobs recruitment scam. 'A section of college principals doesn't speak up against this out of fear. Another section of unqualified college principals who were appointed undeservedly do not want to displease the ruling dispensation. They saw what happened to those who had displeased them,' Mr Adhikari added. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh refuted these claims alleging that during the regime of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), all college campuses were under the Left's local committees and local police station. 'In BJP States, BJP controls college campuses…All student leaders cannot be bad. When Suvendu was in the Trinamool Congress and Trinamool student leaders in his neighbourhood sloganeered in his favour, then he did not mind?' Mr Ghosh asked. Questions were raised about threat culture, corruption, and unchecked misuse of power by leaders of Trinamool's student wing across various colleges in the State when the prime accused in the Kolkata law college rape case, Monojit Mishra, was described by the survivor as a the 'unofficial head' of the party's college unit. Mishra, alias 'MangoDa', had been appointed as a temporary non-teaching staff of the South Calcutta Law College months before he was accused of raping a student in the guard room. While Trinamool Congress leaders disassociated the party from Mishra following rape allegations, in earlier conversations with The Hindu, current students of the college described him as a 'threatening personality who could not be challenged without dire consequences.' In related developments, a video surfaced online allegedly capturing Trinamool youth leader Pratik Kumar De in the union room of Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya getting a head massage from a female student of the college. Additionally, on Tuesday (July 8, 2025), residents of Ballygunge staged a demonstration against Trinamool student leader Sanjay Choudhury, accusing him of fostering an environment of debauchery in the Industrial Training Institute in Ballygunge, despite graduating over a decade ago.
