The Fed Anchors Financial Markets. What Happens If It Loses Its Independence?
President Trump's threat to attempt to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has raised a pressing but potentially unanswerable question: What would the global economy and financial markets look like without an independent U.S. central bank? Shielded from White House interference, the independent Fed has increasingly served as an anchor for U.S. and global markets, stepping in to steady the ship during the 2008-09 financial crisis, the Covid pandemic and other shocks of recent years. Economists credit the central bank's ability to help keep things stable in large part to its power to make moves it deems necessary, regardless of politics.

Prince William's Absence At King Charles And Prince Harry's 'Peace Summit' Branded A 'Warning Shot'
Prince Harry and King Charles recently arranged a private meeting between their top aides, sparking speculation about reconciliation. However, royal experts believe Prince William's absence signals tension, with concerns he distrusts Harry and Meghan. While King Charles is said to seek peace, partly influenced by his battle with cancer, doubts persist after the meeting's details leaked. Prince William Keeps His Distance Amid King Charles And Prince Harry's 'Peace Summit' Although Harry and King Charles seem to be heading toward reconciliation, royal experts believe there's one key figure who's unlikely to forgive or forget any time soon. Royal analyst Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital that Prince William's absence from the talks was no accident. "The important issue is that Prince William and his representatives were not invited," Turner said. He added, "I feel that this was a warning shot across William's bows that Charles is king – not him. … It may also be a stark warning that Charles will decide what happens during his reign, not William." As reported by The Blast, Harry's chief of staff, Meredith Maines, traveled from California to London to meet with King Charles' top aide, Tobyn Andreae. Liam Maguire, head of U.K. communications for Harry and Meghan, also attended the confidential meeting. The low-key meeting is said to have taken place at the Royal Over-Seas League — a private members' club just a short stroll from Clarence House, Charles' London residence. Prince William's Distrust Of His Younger Brother Remains A Stumbling Block On The Road To Peace Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams suggested to the publication that William was likely informed about the private meeting between Charles' and Harry's aides, but deliberately kept his own team out of it. "The king is still battling cancer and is in his late 70s," Fitzwilliams said. "He wants a relationship with his grandchildren, whom he has hardly met. He is also temperamentally more accommodating than William. But [William] cannot trust the Sussexes. They must know it." Fitzwilliams added, "The prospect of seeing the Sussexes at royal events would enrage the monarchy's loyal supporters. … Of course, reconciliation is desirable [for the king]. It would, however, come at a price." King Charles Hopes For Healing With Prince Harry, But Experts Warn Prince William's Absence Could Widen Rift British broadcaster Helena Chard echoed the sentiment, telling the news outlet that personal healing between Charles and Harry could be meaningful. "From a positive private family stance, some personal healing between father and son would be good," Chard said. "King Charles will always love his son, and, in light of the king's ongoing cancer treatment, it could help tidy up the messy, fractured relationship. She further noted that the monarch's health has likely prompted deeper reflection about his relationship with his son. "King Charles is living with cancer, which makes his family situation very sad," Chard explained. "I'm sure he is thinking about his mortality and reevaluating his life. He would not want a family feud tarnishing his positive contributions and memory. I'm sure he will also want to clear up unresolved issues or surprises that could lead to further resentment and conflict between his two sons.' However, Chard cautioned that without Prince William's involvement, achieving long-term peace may be difficult. "Life is too short for battles," she continued. "However, without Prince William's inclusion in the rapprochement, I can't see a positive outcome. It could also cause a wedge between Charles and William, despite the king most certainly consulting with William." Royal Expert Slams 'Peace Summit' Leak British royal commentator Hilary Fordwich expressed skepticism over the so-called 'peace summit,' casting doubt on its sincerity. "My instincts say that Harry is desperate," Fordwich claimed. "And King Charles loves his son and wants to have a restored relationship. However, this tentative step in any fragile peace process was marred by the leak of the meeting's details and photos." Fordwich continued, "How on Earth was the media there?. … Both sides [have] expressed frustration regarding how such a leak jeopardizes the process, with now suspicions and distrust being resurrected.' Prince William's Distrust Of The Sussexes Might Have Deepened After The Leak Fordwich suggested William likely sees the leak as yet another reason to stay distant from Harry and Meghan. "Prince William is likely viewing this leak as being true to form for the Sussexes," she said. "It further reinforces his stance that any reconciliation or indeed dialogue with the Sussexes will become public." Royal expert Helena Chard echoed the concern, questioning how such a private meeting had become public knowledge so quickly. "The trust line seems to have been overstepped yet again," Chard observed. "The story broke as the Prince and Princess of Wales received glowing media attention at Wimbledon." She continued, "This was promptly overshadowed by the leaked reconciliation story. ...The PR machine is seemingly in full play. It wouldn't surprise me if everything was filmed and will soon be featured in a new Netflix show.' Solve the daily Crossword

Prince Harry And Meghan 'Frustrated' Over Details Of 'Peace Talks' With Royal Family Leaking To The Public
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly not pleased at the fact that details of their secret "peace talks" with King Charles made headlines. A Royal source said the meeting is a "significant move" to repairing the broken relationship between father and son following years of estrangement. Meanwhile, Prince Harry's chance of mending his strained ties with his brother is said to be a "different matter entirely," as he'll find it "much harder to repair." Prince Harry And Meghan Markle 'Frustrated' Following 'Peace Summit' Leak Harry and Meghan are said to be "frustrated" after details of a "peace summit" were inadvertently captured on camera. It is no secret that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are open to reconciling with the king, especially after he was diagnosed with cancer last year. It's seemingly in that line that the Montecito-based royals' chief of communications, Meredith Maines, met up with the king's communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae, at the Royal Over-Seas League near Clarence House in London last week. A source said the summit was only the "first step towards reconciliation between Harry and his father, but at least it is a step in the right direction." "There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years. There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about," the insider explained. Although the outcome of the "peace talks" remains under wraps, pictures showing the two sides enjoying drinks raised hopes they'll be able to squash the feud. However, Harry and Meghan are seemingly unhappy with how things are unfolding already, because they don't think having details about the meeting in newspapers is a good start. According to The Telegraph, sources close to Prince Harry claim the Sussexes were not responsible for leaking details of the meeting to the press. The Secret Meeting Had The King's Blessings It remains unknown if it was Harry or King Charles who specifically instigated the meeting; however, the British monarch supposedly backed the talks, with a source close to Charles hailing it as a "significant moment" that could repair the relationship with his son. A source told The Mirror: "The King has consistently shown he loves both his sons and, as he has done in the past, is prepared to meet Harry when their diaries allow." They continued, "It's not unusual for aides from different households to meet, especially when there is a new influx of staff starting, but this is a significant moment." The insider added, "If there is a period of calm and reflection on the part of the duke, then there'll be a way forward for him to begin along the road of repairing his relationship with his father." Prince Harry's Feud With King Charles The feud between Harry and his father started after he and his wife dropped their royal roles and relocated abroad. Shortly after that, Harry gave interviews and accused his stepmother, Queen Camilla, of leaking private information to the press to make herself look good. He also accused members of the royal family of getting "into bed with the devil" to gain favorable tabloid coverage, particularly mentioning how Camilla did all to rehabilitate her public image following her longtime affair with his father. "That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press," Harry told CBS. "There was an open willingness on both sides to trade information. And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being queen consort, there was going to be people or bodies left in the street." The Duke Called For Reconciliation After Losing His Legal Appeal Over His Downgraded Security In The UK Despite his grievances over security, especially after losing his legal appeal in the UK, the Duke of Sussex had an interview with the BBC, where he shared that he still hopes for reconciliation. Harry claimed at the time that the king had avoided contact because of the "security stuff." "There have been so many disagreements between myself and some of my family," Harry admitted. "Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things, but... there's no point in continuing to fight anymore." The prince added, "Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has; he won't speak to me because of this security stuff. It would be nice to reconcile." In response, Buckingham Palace issued a statement noting that the security concerns had been "repeatedly and meticulously" reviewed by the courts, each time reaching the same verdict. "All of these issues have been examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, with the same conclusion reached on each occasion," they said. Prince Harry's Relationship With Prince William Will Be Harder To Repair Although Harry and his father have since grown distant, he has shown just how much he loves the monarch, as he made a frantic dash to the UK upon learning of his cancer diagnosis. However, the same cannot be said about the Duke's relationship with his elder brother, Prince William. An insider who spoke to the Daily Mail cautioned that repairing their relationship is a "different matter entirely and one which he will find much harder to repair." In fact, it is rumored that Harry and Meghan could lose their royal titles when William becomes the king, as he has reportedly not gotten over the serious allegations they made against the royal family upon relocating to the U.S. A source told Radar that Charles was "especially stung" by Harry calling him an "emotionally cold father" in his book, "Spare," but would rather not strip the Sussexes of their titles as he's "very concerned about his image and fears backlash from his subjects," a concern that William doesn't have. "Behind the scenes, people are saying that the royals have quietly sanctioned the title removal – if Harry and Meghan step out of line again," the source said. "The removal would require an Act of Parliament, but those in the know say the palace has already called several secret meetings to discuss the possibility and put an actionable plan in place," they added.
