Fishermen reiterate opposition to deep-sea hydrocarbon project at grievance meeting
During the meeting, the fishermen expressed their condemnation for the deep sea project. They said that bids had already been invited for the project, without conducting any public hearing regarding its implementation. They pointed out that the project envisages exploration at three sites along the Kanniyakumari coast, which would affect the coral reefs and livelihood of the local fishing community.
Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena, who chaired the meeting said that the district administration has not received any official information regarding the proposed project.
At the meeting various petitions were submitted by fishermen. These included the distribution of kerosene at subsidised rate and calls to verify the authenticity of boats currently availing subsidy. Additional petitions were raised seeking the construction of new groyne at Rajakamangalam Thurai, Arockiapuram, Kovalam, Manakudi, Keezha Manakudi and Periyakadu. Many petitions were also submitted regarding the pattas for tsunami houses, extension of bus service to coastal villages and construction of new roads in coastal areas.
They also urged the district administration to ensure compensation for the fishermen affected by sunken cargo vessel MSC Elsa 3 and to provide details of the container locations to ensure the safety at sea.
In response Ms. Alagumeena said that annual inspections are being carried out and only eligible boats are provided kerosene at subsidised rates. She also informed that DPR has been prepared for the construction of new groynes at the coastal villages including Periyakadu and Keezhamanakudi. Regarding the sunken vessel, she stated that fishermen would be alerted with the locations of the container to ensure their safety.
Padmanabhapuram Sub Collector Vinay Kumar Meena, Deputy Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Chinnakuppan and other officials were present at the meeting.

Public urged to use toll-free number 1100 to register grievances
Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan on Sunday urged the public to go for optimal use of the government's toll-free helpline 1100 to register their grievances and follow up the same under the 'Meekosam' programme. In a statement issued here, the Collector highlighted that the helpline is designed to provide easy access to government departments for quick resolution of public complaints. He informed the applicants who have already registered their petitions but without a response or or those seeking updates on the status of their applications, to dial 1100. The Collector said that the initiative would help the citizens to get their grievances resolved without delays. The Collector said that the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS) session will be conducted at the Collectorate on Monday from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm. The sessions would also be simultaneously conducted at the division, mandal, and municipality levels across Sri Sathya Sai district to give greater access to public. The Collector said that the public who have no feasibility to submit their petitions at the PGRS centres physically can submit online through the dedicated portal

Interactive session held for aspiring law students in Thoothukudi
An interactive session, Kundrena Nimirndhu Nil, was held for students enrolled in law courses under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme at the Collectorate here on Saturday. Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, former Madras High Court Judge Chandru and Collector K. Elambahavath participated. Addressing the students, Justice Chandru highlighted Article 39 (a) of the Indian Constitution, introduced in 1976, emphasised equal justice and free legal aid for the poor. He urged the students to understand the law deeply and serve the common people with commitment. He further explained the framing of the Indian Constitution and noted that November 26 was celebrated every year as Constitution Day in India. The fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution cannot be changed. Everyone should learn law and create awareness among the people, he added. Ms. Kanimozhi expressed her happiness at the growing number of girl students enrolling in law courses. 'The dream of Periyar, Aringnar Anna and Kalaignar Karunanidhi is being fulfilled,' she said. She highlighted that 99% students from Thoothukudi district, who completed school education, had enrolled in higher education. Emphasising the need for social justice alongside legal knowledge, she exhorted the students not to limit themselves within a boundary and to set higher goals in order to achieve greater heights and meaningful changes in their chosen field. The Collector said a total of 204 students had applied for law courses through career guidance programmes. Of them, 73 students had successfully enrolled so far, including five in School of Excellence in Law, one in Tamil Nadu National law University in Tiruchi and 67 in Government Law colleges affiliated to Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Disbursal of land compensation starts for railway project in Odisha
MALKANGIRI: The long-awaited 128 km Jeypore-Malkangiri railway project gained momentum with disbursement of Rs 2.45 crore to 39 people towards land acquisition across Mathili panchayat, including four from Khairput block on Friday. Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi distributed the compensation in presence of Malkangiri MLA Narasinga Madkami and collector Asish Iswar Patil. Beneficiaries received Rs 10 lakh per acre as compensation. Majhi said, the 108 km project stretches 80 km across Malkangiri district, affecting 42 villages - 15 in Mathili, 14 in Malkangiri, and 13 in Khairput blocks. 'A total of 1,946 acre of land would be acquired for the project of which 714 acre are private land and 231 acre are government lands. Once the total land acquisition process is complete by December this year, the project work is likely to commence by January 2026. A total of Rs 476 crore will be required for compensation to 844 beneficiaries across the district,' he said. While the project was sanctioned in 2016 with DPR approved in 2018, progress stalled from 2019-2024. Land acquisition expedited only after the double engine government came to power last year, he added. Talking to the TNIE, collector Patil said, the railways deposited Rs 150 crore with the district administration for compensating 844 beneficiaries across the district affected due to the project. The disbursement will complete within six months and the compensatory afforestation for 1,000 acres forest land is at final stage.
