CM's airport infra push: Runway expansion at Amravati, upgradation at Shirdi
Devendra Fadnavis
on Friday directed officials to prepare a detailed expansion plan for the runway at
Amravati Airport
, citing the region's increasing industrial activity and potential for revenue generation. The directive was issued during the 91st meeting of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) held in Mumbai.
The CM emphasised the need to extend the existing 1,850m runway to 3,000m for accommodating larger aircraft and enhancing air connectivity. This move follows the recent inauguration of Amravati Airport's first commercial flight under the 'Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik' (Udan) scheme, which marked the city's entry into India's aviation map.
In addition to the runway expansion, Fadnavis highlighted the establishment of Air India's pilot training institute at Amravati, which is poised to become the largest in South Asia. This development is expected to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities in the aviation sector.
For Chandrapur Airport, Fadnavis suggested extending the runway to allow for chartered aircraft operations. He also directed officials to look for two to three alternate locations for setting up an airstrip in Gadchiroli.

With Nashik and Trimbakeshwar set to host Kumbh Mela in 2027, the CM approved infrastructure upgrades at Shirdi Airport, including the construction of two helipads and eight vehicle parking bays. Given Shirdi Airport's proximity to Nashik, these enhancements aim to facilitate the influx of pilgrims and ease transit during the religious event.
Fadnavis also underscored the importance of accelerating development work at Latur Airport to support its rising significance in the Marathwada region. The upgraded facility is expected to serve neighbouring districts such as Beed and Dharashiv. Additionally, he called for the speedy execution of work at Karad Airport, including provisions for night landing.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of airport works in Ratnagiri, Akola, Kolhapur, Nanded, and Dhule. Officials said that 16 regional air routes are currently operational under the
Udan scheme
, with eight more proposals submitted to govt.
Senior officials from the finance, transport, and industry departments, including additional chief secretaries OP Gupta and Sanjay Sethi, and MIDC CEO P Velrasu, were present during the meeting.

What will it cost to renovate the 'free' Air Force One? Don't ask
President Trump makes no secret of his displeasure over the cost of renovating Federal Reserve headquarters - around $2.5 billion, or even higher by his accounting. But getting White House to discuss another of Washington's expensive renovation projects, the cost of refurbishing a "free" Air Force One from Qatar, is quite another matter. Officially, and conveniently, the price tag has been classified. But even by Washington standards, where "black budgets" are often used as an excuse to avoid revealing the cost of outdated spy satellites and lavish end-of-year parties, the techniques being used to hide the cost of Trump's pet project are inventive. Which may explain why no one wants to discuss a mysterious, $934 million transfer of funds from one of the Pentagon's most over-budget, out-of-control projects - the modernisation of America's aging, ground-based nuclear missiles. In recent weeks, congressional budget sleuths have come to think that amount, slipped into an obscure Pentagon document sent to Capitol Hill as a "transfer" to an unnamed classified project, almost certainly includes the renovation of the new, gold-adorned Air Force One that Trump desperately wants in the air before his term is over. (It's not clear if the entire transfer will be devoted to stripping the new Air Force One back to its airframe, but Air Force officials privately acknowledge dipping into nuclear modernisation funds for the project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo ) Qatar's defence minister and US defence secretary Pete Hegseth signed the final MoU a few weeks ago, paving the way for the renovation to begin soon at a Texas facility known for secret technology projects. Concerns over the many apparent conflicts of interests involved in the transaction, given Trump's govt dealings and business ties with Qataris, have swirled since reports of the gift emerged this spring. But Trump himself said he was unconcerned. "I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer," the president said in May. "I mean, I could be a stupid person and say, 'No, we don't want a free, very expensive airplane. '" It is free in the sense that a used car handed over by a neighbour looking to get it out of his driveway is free. In this case, among the many modifications will be hardened communications and antimissile systems. And there is the delicate matter of ridding the jet of any hidden electronic listening devices that officials suspect may be embedded in the walls. Then it has to be stuffed with the luxuries with which the 47th president surrounds himself So it's no surprise that one of Washington's biggest guessing games these days is assessing just where the price tag will end up, on top of the $4 billion already being spent on the wildly-behind-schedule presidential planes that Boeing was supposed to deliver last year. It was those delays that led Trump to look for a gift. "The security implications of accepting a private plane from a foreign nation as Air Force One and the resulting ethical concerns ... were already significant," said senator Jeanne Shaheen (D), who serves on Armed Services Committee. But it was more worrisome, Shaheen said, that "this administration is diverting funds from nuclear modernisation budget to finance costly renovations to this plane." In doing so, she said, "we're weakening our credibility to fund a vanity project for President Trump. "

Return of meme stock mania has traders on alert for market froth
The reemergence of meme stock mania last week has professional investors facing a quandary: ride the excitement of retail traders or take it as the latest warning sign that the frothy markets are due for a pullback. The speculative stocks caught up in the frenzy this week, like Opendoor Technologies and Kohl's, gave up some of their gains as the week went on, but most are still trading at their highest levels in months. The broader S&P 500 Index and Nasdaq 100 Index are doing even better, sitting at all-time highs after charging back from the early April selloff set off by President Donald Trump's tariff announcements. The amount that investors are borrowing to buy stocks on the New York Stock Exchange, known as margin debt , has exceeded the tech-bubble highs to reach a new record, according to data from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. But signs of fatigue are creeping in. The latest meme stock rally seemed to lose steam after just a few days, and Bitcoin , one of the most visible symbols of the speculative fever, has recently fallen back from its record highs. Some Wall Street trading desks have been urging clients to scoop up discounted protection against possible losses. The current run has stretched valuations, with the S&P 500 trading at nearly 23 times forward earnings, well above the ten-year average of around 18, signalling that stocks have gotten significantly more expensive. "I'm seeing it and just starting to just tuck my horns in a little bit," said Eric Diton, president and managing director of the Wealth Alliance. "I'm longer-term bullish, but I'm just short-term cautious. I really think we're overdue for some kind of a pullback again because of the excessive speculation." Live Events For help in navigating the volatility, some market watchers are looking for comparisons with the most famous meme stock moment back in January 2021, when GameStop and AMC Entertainment captured the world's attention. That buying was fuelled by retail traders who were flush with stimulus checks and stuck at home, swapping tips on social media. It came after a banner year in the markets, in 2020, but ended up being only the beginning of an even bigger rally in 2021, when the S&P 500 rose another 27%. There was, though, eventually a reckoning in 2022 when the index plunged 19%, notching the worst yearly performance since the great financial crisis.
