CM's airport infra push: Runway expansion at Amravati, upgradation at Shirdi

Time of India25-04-2025
Nagpur: Chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis
on Friday directed officials to prepare a detailed expansion plan for the runway at
Amravati Airport
, citing the region's increasing industrial activity and potential for revenue generation. The directive was issued during the 91st meeting of the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) held in Mumbai.
The CM emphasised the need to extend the existing 1,850m runway to 3,000m for accommodating larger aircraft and enhancing air connectivity. This move follows the recent inauguration of Amravati Airport's first commercial flight under the 'Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik' (Udan) scheme, which marked the city's entry into India's aviation map.
In addition to the runway expansion, Fadnavis highlighted the establishment of Air India's pilot training institute at Amravati, which is poised to become the largest in South Asia. This development is expected to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities in the aviation sector.
For Chandrapur Airport, Fadnavis suggested extending the runway to allow for chartered aircraft operations. He also directed officials to look for two to three alternate locations for setting up an airstrip in Gadchiroli.

With Nashik and Trimbakeshwar set to host Kumbh Mela in 2027, the CM approved infrastructure upgrades at Shirdi Airport, including the construction of two helipads and eight vehicle parking bays. Given Shirdi Airport's proximity to Nashik, these enhancements aim to facilitate the influx of pilgrims and ease transit during the religious event.
Fadnavis also underscored the importance of accelerating development work at Latur Airport to support its rising significance in the Marathwada region. The upgraded facility is expected to serve neighbouring districts such as Beed and Dharashiv. Additionally, he called for the speedy execution of work at Karad Airport, including provisions for night landing.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of airport works in Ratnagiri, Akola, Kolhapur, Nanded, and Dhule. Officials said that 16 regional air routes are currently operational under the
Udan scheme
, with eight more proposals submitted to govt.
Senior officials from the finance, transport, and industry departments, including additional chief secretaries OP Gupta and Sanjay Sethi, and MIDC CEO P Velrasu, were present during the meeting.

US lawmakers raise 'China-Russia Alert'; send letter to Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon: Tell us by August 8 ...

Three prominent Republican House lawmakers have reportedly raised national security concerns about the network of more than 400 subsea cables that handle 99% of international internet traffic and about threats from China and Russia. According to a report by Reuters, these lawmakers have pressed the CEOs of Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft on the security of critical submarine communications cables, citing escalating national security concerns. The move comes as Washington raises alarms about potential threats from China and Russia to the vast network of over 400 subsea cables that carry an estimated 99% of global internet traffic. What the letter from Republican lawmakers to Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon says In a letter sent Monday (July 21), Representatives John Moolenaar (Chair of the House panel on China), Carlos Gimenez (Chair of a relevant subcommittee), and Keith Self (Chair of another relevant subcommittee) voiced particular apprehension regarding the continued involvement of "China-affiliated entities such as SBSS, Huawei Marine, China Telecom, and China Unicom" in the maintenance and servicing of cable systems in which the tech giants hold direct or indirect operational involvement or ownership. The lawmakers stated their committees are "examining the extent to which foreign adversarial actors are positioning themselves, both overtly and covertly, to compromise subsea cable systems at key points of vulnerability." They have given the companies until August 8 to disclose any instances of suspected hardware tampering, optical signal tapping, unexpected signal distortion, or other operational irregularities observed during cable repair or maintenance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A genetic disorder that is damaging his organs. Recently, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr announced the agency's plan to implement rules prohibiting companies from connecting undersea submarine communication cables to the United States if they incorporate Chinese technology or equipment. Since 2020, U.S. regulators have been instrumental in blocking four proposed cable projects intended to link the United States with Hong Kong. More recently, in November 2024, two fiber-optic undersea telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea were severed, prompting sabotage investigations. In 2023, Taiwan accused two Chinese vessels of cutting the only two cables providing internet access to the Matsu Islands. Additionally, Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have been implicated in the severing of three cables vital for internet service to Europe and Asia. AI Masterclass for Students. CZMA initiates legal action against Vijaya Sai's daughter

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh Coastal Zone Management Authority (APCZMA) has filed a case in the Bheemili court against Avyaan Realtors, owned by P Neha Reddy and P Rohit Reddy — the daughter and son-in-law of former MP P Vijaya Sai Reddy — for allegedly carrying out illegal constructions along Visakhapatnam's beach road near Bheemili without obtaining coastal regulation zone (CRZ) permissions. According to APCZMA's complaint, the accused constructed a concrete wall within the CRZ limits without prior approval, violating provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986. Although the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation partially demolished the wall up to ground level, underground remnants remain to be cleared. This legal action follows a public interest litigation (PIL No. 53/2024) filed in the high court by Janasena corporator Peethala Murthy Yadav. In response, the court directed authorities to enforce environmental regulations and ensure removal of unauthorised structures. The court confirmed the ongoing violations and ordered immediate demolition and restoration of the affected coastal stretch. Earlier, GVMC had issued provisional and final notices to the firm, instructing the removal of the illegal structure on the seaward side. After the company allegedly failed to comply, GVMC proceeded with demolition and said that it would recover the associated costs under the AP Municipal Corporation Act, 1955. For the uniformed, CRZ rules, framed under the Environment Protection Act, are designed to protect coastal ecosystems by restricting construction within a designated buffer zone from the high tide line. Any development in this zone requires explicit permission from CZMA and environmental clearance. However, observers point to possible lapses in enforcement and oversight by local authorities and urban planning departments when the structure was constructed without permissions.
