Nashik district admin places demand for Rs 22 crore for farmers affected by unseasonal rain in May
Nashik: The district administration has sought Rs 22 crore in govt aid for 35,876 farmers in Nashik district who lost their crops across 12,137 hectares in May due to unseasonal rain. The heavy rainfall began on May 6, affecting various parts of the district and damaging crops such as maize, vegetables, and mangoes. A joint report by the agriculture and revenue departments indicated that the unseasonal showers impacted 35,876 farmers, prompting a demand for Rs 22 crore as per an order of March 27, 2023. As per this order, govt will provide Rs 8,500 per hectare for crop loss in arid areas, Rs 17,000 per hectare for losses in cultivated land, and Rs 22,500 per hectare for horticulture crop damage. Regarding cultivated crops, 21,185 farmers across 963 villages in Nashik district were affected, resulting in losses over 9,471 hectares. Consequently, a demand of Rs 16.1 crore has been submitted to state govt. An official said that Baglan taluka was the worst-affected area, with 3,719 farmers across 145 villages experiencing losses. Within the 9,471 hectares affected, onion crops accounted for 7,593 hectares, while vegetable and other crops each suffered losses of less than 1,000 hectares. In the horticulture sector, Surugana taluka recorded the highest damage, affecting 8,325 farmers across 178 villages. Compensation for these farmers has been requested at Rs 3 crore, with losses spanning 1,336.9 hectares of mango crops. Additionally, in neighbouring Peth taluka, 5,391 farmers across 138 villages were impacted, with 975 hectares of land affected. The district administration has sought Rs 2.2 crore to benefit these farmers.

Marathwada drenched as rain lashes all 8 districts
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Incessant rainfall across Marathwada on Saturday brought about the much-needed relief to kharif crops. However, it has also triggered alerts of possible water discharge from major dams in all eight districts in the region. Increasing inflow of water in Godavari river caused Jayakwadi dam to reach 80.76% of its storage capacity with authorities warning that further inflow might necessitate the release of water into the riverbed. People have been urged to stay away from the river and livestock away too. In Parbhani, water flooded culverts, prompting the closure of Ziro Phata to Purna road in the Purna taluka. The Nizamapur–Bamani road in Ardhapur taluka was also shut due to water overflowing a local stream. Several areas have not seen sunlight for the past two days. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district heavy showers were recorded. Seasonal waterfall over the Ellora caves was flowing with full force. District authorities initiated crop damage assessment in revenue circles hit by heavy rain last week. Many houses in these areas were flooded, damaging household belongings. Local authorities have begun activating five large reservoirs to help with flood water discharge. Extreme rainfall and severe flooding are highly monitored by Chinese authorities as they challenge the country's ageing flood defences, threaten to displace millions, and wreak havoc on a $2.8 trillion agricultural sector.
