Government indifferent as farmers sink deeper into debt: Rahul on Maharashtra farmer deaths
In a post on X in Hindi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha accused the government of ignoring farmers' demands for a loan waiver and a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
On Wednesday (July 2, 2025), Opposition members walked out of the Maharashtra Assembly twice over issues of farmer deathsand non-payment of dues to soybean cultivators in the State.
Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar claimed in the Assembly that 767 farmers died by suicide in Maharashtra between January and March this year. While 200 cases were declared ineligible for aid, inquiries are pending in 194 cases, he said.

"Think about it... in just 3 months, 767 farmers [died by] suicide in Maharashtra. Is this just a statistic? No. These are 767 destroyed homes. 767 families that will never be able to recover. And the government? It is silent. It is watching indifferently," the former Congress president said.
Farmers are sinking deeper into debt every day as seeds, fertilizers and diesel are expensive. "But there is no guarantee of MSP. When they demand a loan waiver, they are ignored," he charged.
"But (what about) those who have crores? The Modi government easily waives their loans. Just look at today's news -- Anil Ambani's Rs 48,000 crore SBI 'fraud'," he said.
"Modi ji had said that he would double the income of farmers. Today the situation is such that the life of the farmer is being halved.
"This system is killing farmers -- silently, but continuously and Modi ji is watching the spectacle of his own PR," Mr. Gandhi said.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya hit back, sharing a chart on X which claimed that 55,928 farmers died by suicide in Maharashtra during the 15-year tenure of the NCP-Congress government.
"The politics of counting the dead is disgusting, but it is necessary to show the mirror to people like Rahul Gandhi," Mr. Malviya said.
Before opening his mouth, Rahul Gandhi should recall the sins committed by the NCP-Congress government during its tenure in Maharashtra, the BJP leader said.
"First tell why 55,928 farmers [died by] suicide in 15 years of Congress-NCP (Sharad Pawar) government in Maharashtra," he said.

Hebbalkar said Rajneesh is a senior IAS officer, and a role model for thousands of women. 'It does not matter who the woman is. She may be an officer, Laxmi Hebbalkar, or a commoner… Who gave him the right to make such comments?' she asked. In May this year, Ravikumar was booked by the police after he said Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum 'may have come from Pakistan'. The Karnataka IAS Officers' Association condemned his remarks, and demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP legislator. Ravikumar made the remarks during a protest rally organised by the BJP at Kalaburagi on May 24. Ravikumar said the deputy commissioner's office in Kalaburagi had lost its independence, and that the DC was 'listening' to what Congress says. 'I don't know whether she comes from Pakistan or is an IAS officer here. Listening to your applause, I think she might have come from Pakistan,' he said.

Tripura: BJP MLA Kishor Barman sworn in as cabinet minister

(Photo from X) Barman is a first-time MLA after winning the 2023 Assembly polls on a BJP ticket. He completed his post graduation in Bengali from Tripura University in 2004. He was engaged with the BJP's organisational work in West Bengal for a long period, after which he was made the party general secretary in Tripura in 2021. This is the second time in two years when the BJP-led state government has expanded its cabinet after coming back to power in 2023. In March last year, TIPRA Motha party MLAs Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma were sworn in as minister and minister of state, a day after the party joined the BJP-IPFT government. Of the 60 members in the Tripura legislative assembly, 32 are from the BJP, one from IPFT who is also serving as minister in the cabinet, 13 MLAs from TIPRA Motha, 10 from the CPIM and three from the Congress. Currently, among 12 seats in the state cabinet, nine are occupied by BJP lawmakers, one by the TIPRA Motha and one by IPFT.
