With the 17th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves selected Joan Beringer. That has some fans buzzing and others wondering if he will be worth the gamble.

Beringer, an 18-year-old French center, arrives after weeks of speculation about the Timberwolves' roster. In particular, it seems they're adding to their frontcourt with a potential successor for Rudy Gobert in the lineup.
Ahead of the NBA Draft, Beringer is someone who was rising up the mock drafts online, but some considered him a "mystery" and a gamble for teams to take. That was due to his limited stats from one season of international play with Cedevita Olimpija.
In his brief international play with Cedevita Olimpija, Beringer averaged just 4.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. The team won the Slovenian League championship, and Beringer led the ABA League in blocks, showing his defensive skills.

An NBADraft.net profile lists Beringer with a 7-foot-3 wingspan and touts his explosive game and "elite length." They refer to the French big man as a 'late bloomer' who stands out on the defensive side of the court, which as many fans know is where Rudy Gobert excelled in his career.

On Wednesday night, Beringer was among the prospects attending the NBA Draft and seated in the green room. Once his name was called, things became real as he put on the Timberwolves cap and shook hands with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
"Welcome to Minnesota, Joan!" a simple introductory greeting said in the Timberwolves' X post.
It quickly prompted many likes and comments from fans reacting to the big announcement. Several fans seemed to agree with this pick as a potential replacement at center for one of the team's current players.
"I like this pick. Naz Reid replacement," one fan commented on X.

"Welcome!!! Future center of the wolves once Gobert is gone. W pick," another fan commented.
"Respect to Rudy for sitting down with the Wolves and selecting his replacement," yet another fan wrote on X.
Not all fans were happy with the pick, as some argued there was a better available player for the Timberwolves.
"Jakucionis was there. Beringer would be a decent pick if he were gone but you gotta take the best player available," an X commenter said.
With Beringer, it seems that Minnesota will likely develop him behind Gobert as he's considered a better defensive player than Reid. However, there's still also a chance that Minnesota is cooking up some sort of trade involving Gobert, Reid, or someone else.

There were more than a few NBA mock drafts projecting the Wolves would opt for a big man in Wednesday's first round. Others suggested they might take Georgetown's Thomas Sorber, but he was already off the board as the Oklahoma City Thunder selected him with the 15th pick.

John Mitchell reveals two Red Roses who could offer scrum-half cover at World Cup

Red Roses head coach John Mitchell has revealed that England are looking at wings Claudia MacDonald and Mia Venner as possible options as scrum half cover ahead of naming their squad for the Rugby World Cup on home soil later this year. Mitchell has begun the process of whittling down his wider squad to the 32 names permitted to be named in his group for the tournament, with England's selection set to be confirmed on 24 July. The veteran coach intends to take a split of 18 forwards and 14 backs to the World Cup, leaving positional versatility required in several areas of his squad. Advertisement Predecessor Simon Middleton took only two specialist scrum halves to the last World Cup in New Zealand, with veteran Natasha 'Mo' Hunt a surprise omission with MacDonald covering as the third nine despite operating largely on the wing during the tournament. Injury then struck first-choice scrum half Leanne Infante on the day of the final, leaving the relatively untested Lucy Packer to start at short notice with MacDonald playing half-an-hour off the bench. While the pair produced good performances, Middleton faced criticism for his selection gamble at the time and in retrospect, and Hunt has since returned to seize the starting shirt with Packer now her back-up. Scrum halves Ella Wyrwas and Flo Robinson are both part of the Red Roses training squad but Mitchell has confirmed that he is looking at the options that forgoing a third specialist nine might present. Advertisement 'I've already said that I'm planning on taking an 18-14 split,' Mitchell reiterated. 'That helps us prepare, especially in our units. And that just means that some girls will have versatile roles. Claudia MacDonald may provide scrum half cover (PA) 'It'll be hard on some players in the sense that some specialists might miss out as a result of the versatility that's needed in an 18-14 split. Claudia MacDonald is definitely being looked at as a scrum half option. Mia [Venner] also presents that as well. Mia also presents the versatility as a full-back. The outside backs, you've got to fit six girls into five, so that's going to be a challenging selection, but a good one.' Venner operated at scrum half earlier in her career and filled in impressively while Hunt was in the sin bin during Gloucester Hartpury's Premiership Women's Rugby final win earlier this year. MacDonald, meawhile, has battled back from a career-threatening neck injury to push for a starting place on the wing. Advertisement Throughout his tenure, Mitchell has made an effort to keep players fully informed of their place in the make-up of the squad and likely roles, something he intends to continue ahead of the World Cup. Hunt's omission came as a surprise ahead of the last tournament, with her exclusion reported in the press ahead of the announcement with a delay between Middleton telling his players and the squad being officially revealed. Natasha Hunt (left) is one of a quartet of Red Roses hoping to win a second World Cup (Getty) Mitchell is unconcerned about the prospect of a possible repeat of that scenario, with most players informed of his plans for them after a warm weather training camp in Treviso from 7 July to 12 July. 'I'm not really worried about anything leaking or when it is. I think that we've been pretty consistent. If you look at the group that's come in, the wider group that's part of the group, they know what's expected of them. Advertisement 'They also are aware of the intentions and the purpose of why they're doing things. Eventually, as we get down the track, everyone will know our pool plans as well. So we work on the people that are probably on the fringes first. That's very clear to them what's expected of them. They just need to be ready because if they get that phone call from me, it could be in a World Cup or a match, it could be in a World Cup quarter-final.' Centre Emily Scarratt is hoping to make a fifth World Cup, with flanker Marlie Packer also pushing for selection despite losing the captaincy at the start of this year. England take on Spain and France in two warm-up games ahead of the tournaments, which will both be capped internationals. A renewed list of Red Roses contracts is expected to be confirmed imminently ahead of the tournament.

Naz Reid reportedly to sign five-year, $125 million extension to stay in Minnesota

Take another name off the potential free agent board. Naz Reid and the Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed to a five-year, $125 million contract extension, a story broken by Shams Charania of ESPN. This keeps a key part of Minnesota's roster in place, a group that has advanced to back-to-back Western Conference Finals. Ried will decline his $15 million player option as part of this contract extension. That was expected, and other teams were eyeing the 2024 Sixth Man of the Year, with Chrania describing a 'vibrant market developing' willing to pay in the neighborhood of what the Timberwolves paid to keep him, but with some teams offering a starting role. Detroit, a team looking for a stretch big, was one team consistently mentioned as interested in Reid. (As of this writing, only Brooklyn would have the cap space to make that kind of offer, but other teams could get there if they wanted.) Reid, 25, averaged 14.2 points and six rebounds a game for the Timberwolves last season. He shot 37.9% from beyond the arc, providing a change of pace from starting center Rudy Gobert. Reid also stepped up with some big games in Minnesota's playoff runs. Minnesota is not done with questions about re-signing big men. They need to decide on Julius Randle, who has a $30.9 million player option that must be picked up by Sunday. He is also seeking an extension.

Tyrese Haliburton Used One Word To Describe How He's Feeling After Injury

Tyrese Haliburton Used One Word To Describe How He's Feeling After Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A day after undergoing surgery for a torn Achilles tendon, Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton took to social media to express the raw emotion behind his injury and summed it all up with one word: 'shock.' Advertisement Haliburton went down early in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It was a heartbreaking moment not just for the Pacers, who lost the game 103–91, but for fans who had followed Haliburton's inspiring postseason run. What began as a promising night with three made 3-pointers ended with Haliburton being helped off the court and later ruled out with a torn Achilles. In a deeply personal message posted hours after the injury was confirmed, Haliburton shared how difficult the last 24 hours had been — physically, emotionally and mentally. 'Man. Don't know how to explain it other than shock,' he wrote. 'Words cannot express the pain of this letdown. The frustration is unfathomable.' Despite the crushing outcome, Haliburton made it clear that he has no regrets. He played through a calf injury to be part of Game 7 and said he would do it all over again. Advertisement 'I've worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends? Makes no sense,' he said. Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton suffered an injury during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals at Paycom Terada-Imagn Images During this year's playoffs, Haliburton averaged 17.3 points and 8.6 assists per game and was often the engine behind Indiana's offense. Still, Haliburton isn't giving up. In the same message, he promised to fight through the recovery and return better, on his terms. 'I don't 'have to' go through this, I get to go through this,' he said, quoting a Bible verse that has helped him stay grounded. 'I'm grateful for the road that lies ahead. Watch how I come back from this.' His longtime girlfriend, Jade Jones, shared her own words of encouragement, calling him 'selfless, brave, and strong.' Advertisement While the road ahead is long, the word Haliburton chose — shock — aptly encompasses everything about the moment. Not just the injury, but the weight of watching a dream get cut short in real time.
