Wine to pass the cricket Test

What to drink while watching cricket? Beer or even Pimm's for the village green, but I think that a Test match on television demands wine. What a series we are having: likely to go down in the record books as a great example of the greatest of games.
Cricket incites memories. The current Indian side have a claim to be world champions. In this last Test, they thumped England even though they rested Jasprit Bumrah, probably the best bowler in the world today. But I recall earlier days when they were usually easy victims in England, with one exception: Sunil Gavaskar's match. This was in 1979 at the Oval and Mike Brearley set the Indians 438 to win. That was a nominal target. In reality Skipper Brearley was giving his side plenty of time to bowl India out.
Gavaskar had other ideas and the Indian total mounted. In those days, it was still possible to patronise the Indians and I was rather hoping they would win, which they might have done until Gavaskar was out for 221. But I was glad that his side held out for a draw: 429 for 8.
I recently tried to explain this to an American who listened, incredulous. 'You are telling me that a match could last for five days and then end in a draw?' 'Yes,' said I, 'and that was the right result, athletically, morally and aesthetically.' 'Well,' replied the Yank, 'even if 1776 had never happened, we would've broken away if you'd made us play cricket.'
Returning to the recent excitement, a friend was equipped with Sky TV and also with a lot of Quincy, a thoroughly enjoyable sauvignon blanc from the Loire, where he had just been, returning with a lot of bottles from Saget la Perrière. This was not a house I had heard of: so much the worse for me. I have drunk a lot of Quincy over the years, without ever paying much attention to the label. It is always good. I do not think that it would age well, but there is no need. A pleasant refreshment during a summer's lease; an aperitif which will last for the first course and also, as we found, for dim sum. Anyway, my host said that Saget was one of the better growers in the Loire and I saw no reason to disbelieve him.
But we decided that something with more profundity would be needed for the post-mortem and to guide the England selectors in their deliberations for the next match. The girls were growing restive: it was suggested that if we wanted to talk cricket, we should move into the garden. A query was raised: 'What about the claret?' One of our number wanted to discuss an issue at least as interesting as England's bowling line-up for Lord's and this time the ladies were happy to join in: which is the finer wine, Léoville Barton or Langoa Barton? Two magnums, both '09, had been decanted.
I recall a previous contest in which I awarded the prize to the Léoville, which made me think of Anthony Barton, that prince of wine-makers, now alas departed. This one was very hard to judge. Both were superb examples of claret, and I found it impossible to analyse their difference. Anthony himself tended to smile sardonically if visitors tried to describe the different layers of scents and taste. He would sometimes puncture pretentiousness by saying: 'Smells of wet dog.'
It would be fun to run these two against a Lafite or Latour – they would no doubt be outgunned. On this evening, we ended up by voting and the result was three-all. Again, an aesthetically satisfying draw.
This Lucullan feast finished with some 60-year-old tawny port. I always find that tawny is easier on the head than its greater rival, vintage. One can only hope than the England selectors can discover some much-needed inspiration from a good bottle or two.

Watson has been a pale shadow of his former self in the time period since, but there have been real shards of light in recent weeks and again at this week's LIV event in England. ‌ The colourful star managed a tied-14th at the Masters this year having missed the cut in the previous two years, has had two LIV Top 10s this term and now sits second with a round to go at JCB Golf and Country Club. It's been slow progress, but Watson can finally feel good things happening and explained: 'The last couple years, it's been a struggle. Been a struggle mentally, physically and golf-wise. You want to play better, right? 'You don't think about it until it happens, where my knee, my forward knee is where I like to put all my weight on chipping and putting, and then when you go through surgery and go through muscle changes, you kind of create bad habits, and so my bad habits, getting back on my heels, maybe even on my other side, so I'm not the same technique that I've always used, if that makes sense. ‌ 'So in all my years of practicing and playing, my technique has now changed over these last couple years, so we really dug in and tried to figure out what it is. So we've tried to figure out that, and I think we made a big step forward in finding out what it is. 'As my leg gets stronger, it takes two years for your leg to get stronger in that position, so here we are. Now we're talking about some of my best finishes. Hopefully we can keep it going.' Watson is second with 18 holes to go in Staffordshire behind runaway leader Joaquin Niemann, but said: 'A high finish puts me, I think I'm like 30th or 31st in points, so it'll probably put me back close to top 24. 'I want to have a strong finish to the year and I see that I can do it. Now, will I do it is the question. But I would love to finish in the Top 20 if not better and have a chance to win and then challenge the Team Championship in match play. 'All of this is a positive step forward going forward in my career. Obviously the better finish I can do, the better it is for me, better for the team, better for everything. Yeah, I'm going to get out there and battle. 'Second place right now looks like it's a good place to finish, so it's going to be a battle for the second place, if nothing else.'

East tennis teams surpass expectations

Mission accomplished and a bit more besides has to be the verdict on the East women and men's tennis teams after another Summer County Cup brought together teams from up and down the UK. East women surpassed themselves as a side promoted the previous year by climbing higher up the scale into Division Two for 2026. As for the men it was no secret that they could struggle into Division One shorn of several key players but the squad dug deep and not only finished third but could have actually taken the title on the final day had Surrey opponents not proved too strong. So, with wins over North Wales, Essex, Norfolk and Lincolnshire the East women go up again, their only defeat this year coming against Warwickshire on the Cheltenham courts. Leading performers were Mhairi Beattie (10 sets won out of 13 played), Hanna Augustynska (9-11) and Sarah McFadyen (9-14). Key was winning a series of tight matches by five ties to four. Victories over North Scotland, Northamptonshire and South Wales while losing to Warwickshire and Surrey meant the men will return to Division One next year and if American based pro's Jake Fearnley and Matt Rankin were to become available that would boost their chances hugely. Top individual performers on the Eastbourne grass were James MacKinlay (12-15) and Scott Duncan (11-15). East Kilbride Pirates mark 40th anniversary after advert in EK News launched club

The American football team hosted a 'homecoming' game last week to celebrate the milestone moment East Kilbride Pirates have marked 40 years since the club burst onto the local sporting scene — with the town's American football team celebrating the milestone with a special 'homecoming' game last week. ‌ Launched in March 1985, the Pirates have come a long way since their first-ever training session at Ballerup. ‌ The team was formed thanks to the East Kilbride News with a notice appearing inviting like-minded locals to get in touch with founder Alex Stewart, and the then-unnamed Pirates were born. ‌ The name followed shortly after, thanks to a competition in this very paper. The winning entry came from a local 10-year-old, Paul Carrigan — and the Pirates would love to know where Paul is now, so they can get in touch to thank him. A playing squad quickly came together. While they waited for their first full kit to arrive, the team played three 'unkitted' games that first year — starting with a heavy defeat to the Ayr Burners, before bouncing back with wins over the Johnstone Crusaders and Stirling University. Fast forward four decades and the club has never been stronger. With several league titles under their belt, what began as a single adult team has grown into eight different squads offering both contact and flag football for players aged seven and up — including two women's flag teams. Over the years, Pirates players have gone on to represent their country at all levels. Earlier this month, Tate Garrett and Justin Goodall from the club's U16s lined up for the GB Lions U17 squad in Derby. And there's more to come — Leah McKendrick, who plays for the U17 flag and U19 contact teams, has been selected for the GB U17 girls squad heading to Austria next month for the European Championships, while Abi Coleman, from the women's flag side, has been called up to the GB women's contact squad competing later this year. ‌ The 40th celebrations culminated in a double-header of action at GHA Rugby Club in Giffnock on July 20. The U19s were up first, facing off against the Edinburgh Napier Knights U19s. Despite a strong effort, the young Pirates lost out 14–42. In the senior game that followed, the Pirates fell short in a tight contest, losing 6–12 to the Manchester Titans. ‌ Current club chair Amanda McDonald, now in her fourteenth year at the helm, said: 'This is a really special landmark for us. We're one of the longest-surviving clubs in the UK, and the oldest in Scotland. Sunday's final home game of the season was our 40th anniversary homecoming, and we invited all former Pirates players to come along — with free entry if they're on our all-time roster. 'It was a fantastic chance to reconnect with old teammates and cheer on the current squad as they took on the Manchester Titans.' ‌ A highlight of the day came at half-time in the senior game, when club founder Alex Stewart was inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame by Club Committee member and historian and Hall of Famer Bill Campbell — marking ten years since the Hall of Fame was launched, and 40 since Alex placed that very first notice that brought the Pirates together. Although the Pirates now train primarily in Hamilton and play home games at GHA Rugby Club in Giffnock, they've stayed true to their East Kilbride roots — with women's flag, U17, and U19 teams still practising at Calderglen High School in the town. Amanda added: 'One of our biggest challenges remains costs — with everything becoming more expensive. ‌ 'In our 40th year, it would be amazing if any local businesses interested in sponsoring us, and helping us reach our 50th anniversary, could get in touch. 'Our U16s are playoff-bound and hoping for U16 Britbowl in Sheffield, which would mean an expensive trip. And our senior team continues to compete in the Premiership — the only team in Scotland to do so — which means long and costly travel.' The club is always on the lookout for new players too — so if you fancy giving American football a try, now's the perfect time.
