'Mamata Banerjee saving rioters': BJP vs Trinamool over Waqf violence report

India Today21-05-2025
The BJP accused Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of shielding the Murshidabad rioters after a panel set up by the Calcutta High Court alleged that a local Trinamool leader played a key role in orchestrating the attacks. The allegation invited a swift clapback from the ruling Trinamool, which accused the BJP of politicising the incident, which left three dead. The report by the three-member committee, set up to probe the anti-Waqf protests in Murshidabad, pointed to serious lapses by the authorities. It also alleged that a local councillor directed the attacks in Dhuliyan.advertisementThe report mentioned that as many as 113 houses were vandalised in Betbona village and several temples were destroyed in the violence, which erupted during protests over the passage of the Waqf bill.'VIOLENCE AGAINST HINDUS AT BEHEST OF TMC LEADERS'
Addressing a press conference, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the report exposed that the violence was carried out against Hindus at the behest of some Trinamool leaders. He also demanded an apology from Mamata Banerjee."If Hindus were selectively killed in Pahalgam, attempts were made in Murshidabad to selectively kill Hindus and destroy their houses. Violence was carried out against the Hindus in a well-planned manner at the behest of Trinamool leaders," he said.Bengal BJP chief and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleged that there were attempts to molest girls during the violence and demanded an apology from the Chief Minister.advertisement"Mamata Banerjee tried to save these rioters. She lied and misled the people of the state. She should apologise to the people of the state for lying," Majumdar said.Majumdar also said that the Trinamool councillor, mentioned in the report, didn't try to save the Hindus. "His name (Mehboob Alam) was mentioned by the local residents, those whose houses were vandalised, and temples were demolished," he said.TRINAMOOL REACTSHitting back, senior Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh stood by the party's stand that outsiders were brought from Bangladesh to foment trouble in Murshidabad."Investigation is still on and all conspiracies are being looked at. Arrests are happening and compensation is given (to victims)," Ghosh said."After Operation Sindoor, we are playing the role of a responsible opposition. But, the BJP is politicising the Murshidabad violence," he further said.Must Watch

Revanth Reddy should make way for Ponnam Prabhakar or Mahesh Kumar Goud as CM: BJP president

Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao suggested that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy should quit and hand over the post to his Cabinet colleague Ponnam Prabhakar or PCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, both of them belonging to the Backward Classes (BCs) if he was really sincere about the BC welfare. In an informal interaction with the media at the State party office on Friday, Mr. Rao 'thanked' Mr. Reddy for making the suggestion of making former Governor Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President and said the party will take a call on that and offered his own piece of advice to the CM. The BJP leader has accused Mr. Reddy of insulting the entire BC community with his comments that Prime Minister Modi belonged to a 'converted BC caste' and wanted to know what religion or caste his (CM) leader Rahul Gandhi belonged to. The Chief Minister should be given a 'Goebbels Prize' for all kinds of propaganda he was indulging in, he said and demanded the Congress first fulfil the promise of 42% quota for the BC in the local body polls by amending Section 285 of the Panchayat Raj Act to make it 'legally strong'. Mr. Rao said the Telangana government caste census cannot be a role model for the country when it had reduced the BCs numbers. It was unfair and outrageous to add 'all the Muslims' in the 10% quota out of the 42% BC quota when only a few castes like 'dudekulas', 'hajis' and 'pakirs' were included in the BC-B category earlier. The Congress government has made only two persons from among BC as Cabinet Ministers whereas the majority of Ministers in the Modi Cabinet belonged to BCs, he said. The BJP chief also dismissed about the internal fights in the party as a 'family' issue and said the Central leadership is seized of the issue. He would soon constitute a new State committee with 20 persons and 33% posts would be given to women. There is no pressure on him about the new party posts and wanted the aspirants to go to the people and fight on public issues.

SC displeased over stay on trials in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riot cases, urges Allahabad HC to expedite

New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court today expressed dismay over the Allahabad High Court staying trial proceedings in three out of eleven cases related to the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots, where trials had commenced after re-investigation and filing of chargesheets by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). A Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed, 'What really bothers is that in 11 cases where trials commenced pursuant to chargesheets filed by SIT, such trials have been stayed by High Court in three cases. "While we do not wish to impact the right of a suspect or accused to avail his/her remedy, including quashing of chargesheet, all that we request the High Court is to take up these matters out of turn and expeditiously for their adjudication in accordance with law.' The Court highlighted that the conclusion of these trials would take reasonable time, and availability of witnesses becomes increasingly difficult with the passage of time. 'It is only with repeated efforts made by this Court that the investigations were revived, SIT was constituted, and chargesheets have now been filed… judicial notice of the fact that conclusion of trial will take some reasonable time… most importantly, availability of witnesses, with passage of time, becomes a difficult task,' the Bench noted. During the hearing, the Court went through a compliance report filed by the State of Uttar Pradesh, which revealed that the contents of one FIR dated November 9, 1984, could not be recovered even by the CFSL. The CFSL report stated that, except for some sections, the rest of the FIR was fragmented. Considering its previous orders and the CFSL findings, the Court said no further action could be taken at this stage, but added that if any duplicate copy or related document is recovered, it should be brought to the Court's notice. Regarding four appeals filed before the High Court challenging acquittals in riot cases, the Court noted from the status report that these appeals were being actively pursued for hearings on the merits. The Bench impressed upon the UP Advocate General to deploy the 'best of the state law officers' having requisite expertise to handle these sensitive matters. In April as well, the Court had directed the State to appear in cases where trial proceedings were stayed and to take all necessary steps for their early disposal. Reiterating its stand today, the Court stated it had no reason to doubt that the High Court would conduct the cases expeditiously and take them up out of turn. Advocate Jagjit Singh Chabra appeared for the petitioners, while Advocate Ruchira Goel represented the State of Uttar Pradesh.
