Chandigarh MC fines Punjab & Sind Bank for violating waste management rules

The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) is taking a firm stand against institutions that fail to adhere to Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules. In a recent move, the corporation has penalised Punjab and Sind Bank's Sector 17-B branch with a ₹5,000 fine for illegally stacking construction and demolition waste. This action follows a fine of ₹13,500 levied on Punjab National Bank earlier on July 4, signalling a clear message that no entity is exempt from the city's cleanliness regulations. Municipal commissioner Amit Kumar has issued a stern warning to all violators, emphasising that no individual or institution is above the law when it comes to maintaining public hygiene. The Punjab and Sind Bank was found guilty of unauthorised stacking of construction and demolition (C&D) waste outside its premises without seeking prior permission, and for failing to clear the debris despite repeated reminders from the civic authorities.
This action was taken after multiple notices and verbal communications failed to elicit any response from the institution. The unattended waste not only posed a public nuisance but also undermined the civic body's efforts to maintain a clean and garbage-free environment in the heart of the city.
Municipal commissioner Amit Kumar has issued a stern warning to all violators, emphasising that no individual or institution is above the law when it comes to maintaining public hygiene. He reiterated the corporation's zero-tolerance policy against non-compliance with the SWM Rules and called upon all stakeholders to act responsibly and in accordance with the prescribed waste disposal norms.
He said the beautification and cleanliness of Chandigarh cannot be compromised and urged all citizens, institutions, and businesses to follow the Rules strictly. Those found violating will face strict penalties without exception,' the Commissioner added.
Commissioner Kumar said that the civic body will continue to monitor violations across the city, and such punitive actions will be taken wherever needed to enforce compliance and sustain Chandigarh's cleanliness standards.

Residence certificate application in name of CM prompts police probe

Patna: An online application for a residence certificate in the name of CM Nitish Kumar has come to light in Muzaffarpur district, prompting a police investigation into the matter, reported by Saraiya circle revenue officer Abhishek Singh. He filed an FIR at Saraiya police station on July 29, even as the matter surfaced on Aug 3. The fraudulent application was detected during the verification process, and authorities are now on a hunt for the individual who submitted the online application, police said on Monday. Alleging that the fraud was orchestrated to tarnish the CM's image, Singh lodged a complaint, stating while processing an online residence certificate on July 29, he discovered an application under the name of CM Kumar, with Lakhan Paswan as father and Lakiya Devi as mother. "The applicant's photo was replaced with CM Kumar's image. Upon seeing the application, an investigation was initiated," he said. Saraiya station house officer Subhash Mukhiya said an investigation is underway. "Sub-inspector Anil Kumar has been appointed as the investigating officer. The police are taking the help of cyber experts to track the applicant's Internet Protocol address," he said. It should be noted that recently, a case of issuing a residence certificate for a dog went viral, raising questions on the Bihar administration. The residence certificate, issued through the Bihar RTPS portal of the Masaurhi zone office in Patna district, bore the digital signature of Murari Chauhan, the revenue officer concerned. The certificate featured a picture of a dog named 'Dog Babu', and address listed as Mohalla Kaulichak, Ward-15, Masaurhi Nagar Parishad.

Bank on track to book Rs 16,000 cr-plus profit in FY26, says PNB MD

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Unfazed by 48 per cent decline in net profit in the first quarter, Punjab National Bank MD and CEO Ashok Chandra has said the bank can still achieve the level of profit earned in the last financial year helped by about Rs 2,100 crore savings due to migration to the new tax regime. The country's second-biggest public sector lender had earned a net profit of Rs 16,630 crore in FY25. The net profit of the bank fell 48 per cent to Rs 1,675 crore due to significant rise in tax expenses during the first quarter to Rs 5,083 crore as the bank switched to the new tax regime. 'We thought that this is the right time for us to move from the old tax regime to new tax because the old tax rate is 34.94 per cent and new tax is 25.16 per cent. So, almost 10 per cent difference is there," he told PTI in an interview. 'So when you are migrating from old tax to new tax, you need to rework DTA calculation, because it was calculated at 34.9 per cent so when we are recalculating that DTA, that hit has come to the extent of Rs 3,424 crore," he said. Going forward, he said, the bank is going to save 10 per cent of the operating profit every quarter on account of the migration to the new tax regime. 'So, assuming that the Rs 7,000 crore operating profit is going to happen in every quarter, I think Rs 700 crore net accretion will happen on account of migration itself to the net profit. It is going to give us 16 basis point improvement in the bank's return on assets," he said. Asked if the bank will be able to surpass the profit earned in the last financial year, Chandra said it will remain at the same level as in the previous year as migration to the new regime would lead to saving of about Rs 700 crore every quarter from now on. Besides, he said, income from treasury operations other than interest income is going to boost operating profit. He further said PNB is well poised to touch the milestone of Rs 30 lakh crore total business by the end of the current financial year and the country's second biggest lender has the right strategy in place to achieve it. Total business of PNB rose 11.6 per cent to Rs 27.19 crore at the end of the first quarter of the current financial year. PNB is closely followed by Bank of Baroda with total business of Rs 26.43 lakh crore while Canara Bank at Rs 25.64 lakh crore at the end of June 30, 2025. 'We have a target of Rs 29.56 lakh crore for the current financial year. We may do better than our target and can touch Rs 30 lakh crore by March next year but let me add that we are very mindful that whatever the top line we are going to build, it should add profit to my bank," he said. Chandra emphasised that PNB is very conscious of the operating profit and even in the first quarter itself the bank has recorded the highest-ever operating profit of Rs 7,081 crore. 'Whether it is, deposit mobilisation or the corporate loan book, everything should add to the bottom line of the bank. So that is the reason now, bulk deposits have been brought down and the corporate deposits have curtailed to a great extent," he said. WhatsApp cracks down on harmful behaviour, bans over 98 lakh accounts in India this June

WhatsApp removed more than 98 lakh accounts in India during the month of June as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle misuse and harmful behaviour on the platform, according to the company's latest compliance report. The Meta-owned messaging service disclosed that around 19.79 lakh of these accounts were banned proactively, without waiting for user reports, based on internal abuse detection mechanisms. Published in line with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the June report outlines actions taken by WhatsApp to curb violations originating from India. The platform received a total of 23,596 user complaints during the period, with action taken against 1,001 accounts. These actions included banning accounts or reversing previous bans following a review. Out of the total complaints, 16,069 were appeals related to account bans. Following assessments, action was taken on 756 of these cases. The remaining complaints spanned categories such as account assistance, safety-related concerns, and product feedback. WhatsApp emphasised that it considers it more effective to prevent harmful behaviour in advance rather than respond after the fact. The platform's abuse detection systems operate at multiple levels, during account registration, while messages are being sent, and in response to user feedback or behavioural patterns flagged internally. Meanwhile, in other news, Italy's antitrust regulator has launched a formal investigation into Meta Platforms over claims that it misused its market dominance by integrating its artificial intelligence tool into WhatsApp without securing user consent. The Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM) announced last week that the probe focuses on potential breaches of European Union competition laws. It alleges that Meta's integration of its AI assistant into WhatsApp, introduced in March 2025, may have disadvantaged rival services by directing users toward its own tools. According to the regulator, the Meta AI assistant was embedded into WhatsApp's search bar, effectively introducing a new service within an existing one. The AGCM raised concerns that this move may have compelled users to interact with Meta's AI by default, undermining fair competition and limiting consumer choice.
