Brendan Allen tells Marvin Vettori to 'grow up,' recalls casino brawl ahead of UFC 318

Brendan Allen shares his side of the story.
NEW ORLEANS – Brendan Allen and Marvin Vettori are set to run things back this Saturday, although officially it will be the first time they meet.
The two UFC middleweight contenders clash on the preliminary card of UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), which takes place at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The two men have plenty of history – a failed booking in April 2024 and a brawl after a PFL event last August.
Speaking to reporters just days away from their bad-blood bout, Allen (24-7 MMA, 12-4 UFC) recalled his viral fight with Vettori (19-7-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) on the casino floor of the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla.
"Basically I was there with my wife and some friends and teammates. We were supporting teammates for PFL, and it was time to go," Allen said on Wednesday at UFC 318 media day. "I was leaving, and I heard people the whole night say he was looking for me, and my response was always, 'I'm not hard to find. I'm pretty easy to find.'"
Allen exited the Hard Rock Live venue and into the hotel's casino, and that's when he first saw Vettori, who was getting aggressive with UFC light heavyweight Tuco Tokkos – Allen's friend and teammate.
"On the way out of the door of the arena and into the Hard Rock (casino), I look and my friend Tucco is getting swung on by Marvin," Allen said. "At first he's telling him, like you could see him do this (putting up his hands) like, 'Calm down, chill. We're not doing that.'"
According to Allen, one of his teammates pushed back Vettori, and that's when Allen rushed his rival. However, there were plenty of people present, and he was held back before he could get to Vettori
"He ends up somehow creeping around the crowd and coming back behind me, and obviously there's 40, 50 people, and I lose track of him, and people are grabbing me," Allen said. "Lucky, he goes to swing around me and my boy Tuco smacks his hand as he's swinging at me, and my boy Tuco ends up hitting me because of the force and everything."
Allen claims Vettori circled back around for a second shot, and that's when the most viral angle of the brawl began. In the video, you could see UFC lightweight Michael Johnson, who also competes at UFC 318, get the crowd to make space, setting up an impromptu arena for Allen and Vettori, who were left standing across each other.
"He's looking at me dead in my eyes, as you can see from the camera angles," Allen explained. "... He's looking at me in my eyes, he puts his hands up, and what do you do? You walk away, and you're a b*tch, or you walk over there and hit him? I walked over there and hit him."
Allen is not looking to extend his beef with Vettori beyond Saturday. He'd be more than willing to squash their differences as he sees the feud as childish.
"It's like grow up, man," Allen said. "I'm almost 30 years old, and I have all those kids over there. I'm not trying to act stupid, and that was the whole point. Apparently he got mad at me because I said one of his fights was sh*t. It was like, 'Man, it takes two to fight. So if I called your fight sh*t, it's both of you guys. It's not just one.' I've had sh*t fights. If I'm saying it to me as a fighter, imagine how many other people you're going to hear it from. If that's what you got mad at, alright, bro."

Patriots first practice in full pads date revealed

Following four training camp practices, the New England Patriots are scheduled to have their first practice in pads on Monday, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. The team has held competitive drills in helmets and shorts throughout the spring and the first week of training camp. With the pads coming on, fans will have an opportunity to get a more realistic look at where the team currently stands in its preparation for the regular season. The intensity will ramp up with tackling and trench-fighting. There is no better gauge of talent than physical competition on the football field. Reiss wrote: "Vrabel said his most exciting day of camp is when the team is in full pads for the first time, because there's always an under-the-radar player who emerges. The Patriots' first full-pads practice is scheduled for Monday." The football season is right around the corner. NFL preseason football kicks off with the Pro Football Hall of Fame game on Thursday, and the first Patriots preseason game is slated for August 8 against the Washington Commanders. With football action less than two weeks away, the Patriots are clearly ready to take practice to the next level. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Mick Maynard's Shoes: What's next for Robert Whittaker after UFC on ABC 9 loss?

Robert Whittaker suffered a critical loss at an important time in his career Saturday against Reinier de Ridder in the UFC on ABC 9 headliner. Just as he voiced his intention to make a final title push before retirement, the former middleweight champion Whittaker (26-9 MMA, 17-7 UFC) dropped a split decision to de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, and he's now dropped consecutive fights for the first time in more than a decade. Whittaker was hoping to rebound strong from a 2024 Submission of the Year loss to Khamzat Chimaev in October, but instead he's in uncharted territory after falling on the wrong side of the scorecards against an opponent who was ranked No. 12. What does the future hold for Whittaker? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis after the UFC on ABC 9 main event.

WNBA All-Star Weekend sets all kinds of viewership history

The post WNBA All-Star Weekend sets all kinds of viewership history appeared first on ClutchPoints. The WNBA is gaining steam in terms of popularity and attention. Television ratings for the league have steadily increased over the past year, and this year's All-Star weekend continued that trend. The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game was the second-highest watched All-Star game ever for the league, per ESPN. ESPN released a graphic that showed viewership was up 158 percent from the 2023 game. About 2.2 million people watched the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game on television and streaming services. The WNBA Skills Challenge and 3-point Contest also drew in big numbers. TV viewership was up 89 percent from last year, ESPN said. It was the highest-rated skills contest and 3-point challenge ever on TV for the league. The skills contest also was the most-viewed program across all TV in primetime for people under 35 years of age, per ESPN. This is obviously very good news for the league. The WNBA has lost money consistently since its inception, but there is hope that the league's growing popularity will turn it into a profitable enterprise. Caitlin Clark sat out WNBA All-Star Game activities One of the WNBA's biggest stars is Caitlin Clark, who plays for the Indiana Fever. Due to an injury, Clark sat out All-Star weekend festivities. Even without her on the floor, the league was able to get plenty of eyes on their festivities. The 2025 All-Star Game was not able to match the viewership ratings though of last year's game. Many believe that is because Clark wasn't able to suit up. She still appeared on the TV broadcast, even though she didn't officially play. 'Caitlin Clark effect manifests itself in 2 ways: Anything with Clark, then without, drops hard. NCAA title game -54%. Draft -49%. All-Star -36%. Regular-season -50% during her time out (but still up for 2025),' Sports Business Journal reporter Austin Karp wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'Numbers even without Caitlin well above years before her arrival.' In the All-Star Game, Team Collier won 151-131 over Team Clark. Napheesa Collier led her team with 36 points. Kelsey Mitchell had 20 points to lead Team Clark. WNBA fans hope this trend continues flowing in the right direction.
